Joshua 1
1
1After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua, the son of Nun, who had been Moses' assistant. He told him, 2“My servant Moses has died. So go and cross the Jordan, you and all the people, and enter the country I am giving to the Israelites. 3As I promised Moses, everywhere you set foot will be land I am giving to you,#1:3. Referring not to Joshua, but to all the people. 4from the desert to Lebanon, and on up to the River Euphrates; all the land of the Hittites, and to the shore of the Mediterranean Sea to the west. This will be your territory. 5No one will be able to stand against you while you live. Just as I was with Moses, I will be with you. I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.
6Be strong! Be brave! You will be the people's leader as they occupy the land I promised their ancestors that I would give them. 7Just be strong and very brave, and be sure to obey all the law that my servant Moses instructed you to follow. Don't turn aside from it, either to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in everything you do. 8Keep on reminding the people about the law.#1:8. Literally, “The scroll of the law shall not depart from your mouth.” Meditate on it day and night, so you can be sure to do what it requires. Then you will be successful and prosper in what you do. 9Don't forget what I told you: Be strong! Be brave! Don't be afraid! Don't get discouraged! For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
10Then Joshua gave an order to those in charge of the people: 11“Go through the whole camp and tell the people, ‘Get everything ready, because in three days time we will cross the Jordan, to go and take the land God is giving to you to possess.’”
12But to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13“Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord, ordered you to do: ‘The Lord your God is giving you rest, and will give you this land.’ 14Your wives and children, and your livestock will remain here in the land that Moses allotted#1:14. It appears that generally the land divisions were decided by casting lots, so this seems the best word to use. you on the east side of the Jordan. But all your armed men, ready for battle, will cross over ahead of your brothers to help them, 15until the Lord lets them rest, as he has let you rest, and they too have taken possession of the land that the Lord is giving to you. Then you can return and occupy your own land which Moses allotted to you on the east side of the Jordan.”
16They said to Joshua, “We will do everything you have ordered us to do, and we will go wherever you send us. 17We will obey you just as we obeyed Moses in everything. May the Lord God be with you as he was with Moses. 18Anyone who rebels against what you say and doesn't follow your orders, who doesn't obey everything you command, will be put to death. So be strong! Be brave!”

Joshua 1

Joshua becomes the leader of Israel
1Moses, the LORD's servant, was dead. So the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The LORD said:
2My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the River Jordan into the land I'm giving to all of you. 3Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses.#Dt 11.24,25. 4It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the north-east as far as the great River Euphrates. It will include the land of the Hittites,#1.4 the land…Hittites: This refers to the northern part of Syria, which had been the southernmost part of the Hittite empire. and the land from here at the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. 5Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.#Dt 31.6,8; He 13.5.
6-8Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law#1.6-8 the Law: Or “Teachings”. he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.#Dt 31.6,7,23.
9I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the LORD your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
Israel crosses the River Jordan and conquers Jericho
The eastern tribes promise to help
10Joshua ordered the tribal leaders 11to go through the camp and tell everyone:
In a few days we will cross the River Jordan to take the land that the LORD our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.
12Joshua told the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh:#1.12 East Manasseh: The half of Manasseh that settled east of the River Jordan.#Nu 32.28-32; Dt 3.18-20; Js 22.1-6.
13-14The LORD's servant Moses said that the LORD our God has given you land here on the east side of the River Jordan, where you could live in peace. Your wives and children and your animals can stay here in the land Moses gave you. But all of you who can serve in our army must pick up your weapons and lead the men of the other tribes across the River Jordan. They are your relatives, so you must help them 15conquer the land that the LORD is giving them. The LORD will give peace to them as he has given peace to you, and then you can come back and settle here in the land that Moses promised you.
16The men answered:
We'll cross the River Jordan and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us. 17-18If the LORD our God will help you as he helped Moses, and if you are strong and brave, we will obey you as we obeyed Moses. We'll even put to death anyone who rebels against you or refuses to obey you.
