Job 40
40
1God continued speaking to Job. 2“Are you still going to fight with the Almighty and try to set him straight?#40:2. Or “Shall a faultfinder contend with God?” Anyone who argues with God must give some answers.”
3Job answered the Lord, 4“Me—I am nothing at all. I have no answers. I put my hand in front of my mouth. 5I have already said far too much and I won't say anything more.”
6Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, 7“Prepare yourself, be strong, for I am going to question you, and you must answer me.
8Are you really going to say my decisions are wrong?#40:8. Or “invalidate my justice.” Are you going to condemn me so you can be right? 9Are you as powerful as I am? Does your voice thunder like mine? 10Why don't you dress yourself with majesty and dignity, and clothe yourself with glory and splendor! 11Let loose your fierce anger. Humble the proud with a glance. 12Bring down the proud with your gaze; tread the wicked underfoot right where they are. 13Bury them in the dust; lock them away in the grave. 14Then I will also agree that your own strength can save you.
15Consider Behemoth,#40:15. Some identify Behemoth as the hippopotamus; others with a legendary creature. Behemoth is the plural of the usual word for animal. a creature I made just like I made you. It eats grass like cattle. 16Look at its powerful loins, the muscles of its belly. 17It bends its tail like a cedar; its thigh sinews are strong. 18Its bones are like bronze tubes; its limbs like iron rods. 19It is the most important example of what God can do; only the one who made it can approach it with a sword.#40:19. The Hebrew is unclear. The verse may mean that only its Creator can defeat it. 20The hills produce food for it, and all the wild animals play there.#40:20. Presumably the other animals are safe from the Behemoth since it is vegetarian. 21It lies under the lotus;#40:21. Some identify this with the Lotus plant, others with the Lotus tree. it hides in the reeds of the marsh. 22The lotus covers it with shade; the willow trees of the valley surround it. 23Even if the river is in flood, it is not concerned; it remains calm when the Jordan river surges against it. 24No one can catch it while it is watching, or pierce its nose with a noose.”#40:24. Or “It can take it with his eyes: it can pierce a snare with its nose.”

Job 40
40
The LORD speaks and Job answers
1The LORD continued to respond to Job:
2Will the one who disputes with the Almighty correct him?
God’s instructor must answer him.
3Job responded to the LORD:
4Look, I’m of little worth. What can I answer you?
I’ll put my hand over my mouth.
5I have spoken once, I won’t answer;
twice, I won’t do it again.
A challenge from the LORD
6The LORD answered Job from the whirlwind:
7Prepare yourself like a man;
I will interrogate you, and you will respond to me.
8Would you question my justice,
deem me guilty so you can be innocent?
9Or do you have an arm like God;
can you thunder with a voice like him?
10Adorn yourself with splendor and majesty;
clothe yourself with honor and esteem.
11Unleash your raging anger;
look on all the proud and humble them.
12Look on all the proud and debase them;
trample the wicked in their place.
13Hide them together in the dust;
bind their faces in a hidden place.
14Then I, even I, will praise you,
for your strong hand has delivered you.
Behemoth
15Look at Behemoth, whom I made along with you;
he eats grass like cattle.
16Look, his strength is in his thighs,
his power in stomach muscles.
17He stiffens his tail like a cedar;
the tendons in his thighs are tightly woven.
18His bones are like bronze tubes,
his limbs like iron bars.
19He is the first of God’s acts;
only his maker can come near him with a sword.
20Indeed, the hills bring him tribute,
places where all the wild animals play.
21He lies under the lotuses,
under the cover of reed and marsh.
22The lotuses screen him with shade;
poplars of the stream surround him.
23If the river surges, he doesn’t hurry;
he is confident even though the Jordan gushes into his mouth.
24Can he be seized by his eyes?
Can anyone pierce his nose by hooks?
