Job 37
37
1“At this my heart trembles, beating rapidly within me!#37:1. “Beating rapidly”: literally, “leaping from its place.” 2Listen carefully to God's thunderous voice that rumbles as he speaks. 3He sends it across the heaven; his lightning flashes to the ends of the earth. 4Then comes the roar of thunder, his majestic voice holding nothing back when he speaks. 5God's thunderous voice is wonderful! We can't comprehend the great things he does!
6He tells the snow to fall and the rain to pour down on the earth. 7By this he stops people working so that everyone can understand what he does. 8Even the animals take shelter and remain in their dens. 9The south wind blows in storms, while the north wind blows in cold weather.#37:9. Literally, “From its chamber comes the whirlwind; and cold from the scattering wind.” 10God's breath produces ice, freezing the surface of water solid. 11He fills the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning from them. 12They swirl around under his control; they move over all the earth as he commands. 13He does this to accomplish his will, either to discipline or to show his goodness.#37:13. The Hebrew is unclear.
14Listen to this, Job! Stop for a moment and consider the wonderful things God does. 15Do you know how God controls the clouds, or makes his lightning flash from them? 16Do you know how clouds float#37:16. Literally, “balance.” in the sky—the wonderful work of him who knows everything. 17You know how your clothes drip with sweat when the south wind brings air that is hot and heavy. 18Can you hammer out the sky so it becomes like a molten mirror, as he does?
19So why don't you teach us what to tell God? We cannot make our case because we are in the dark!#37:19. Once again Elihu is being ironic. 20Should God be told that I want to speak? Anyone who wanted to would be destroyed!#37:20. “Destroyed”: or “swallowed up.” Elihu is saying he fears that if he spoke directly to God he would be killed. 21After all, we can't look at the sun when it blazes brightly in the sky, after the wind has cleared away the clouds. 22Out of the north God comes shining like gold, surrounded in awesome majesty. 23We cannot approach the Almighty for he is far beyond us in power and justice, and doing right. 24He does not act like a tyrant—no wonder people are in awe of him, though he does not value those who think they're wise.”#37:24. It's interesting that Elihu who thinks he is so wise should finish his speech with such a comment!

Elihu Continues: God’s Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding
1“My heart pounds because of this
and jumps out of its place.
2Listen! Listen to the roar of God’s voice,
to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3He flashes his lightning everywhere under heaven.
His light flashes to the ends of the earth.
4It is followed by the roar of his voice.
He thunders with his majestic voice.
He doesn’t hold the lightning back when his thunder is heard.
5God’s voice thunders in miraculous ways.
It does great things that we cannot understand.
6“He says to the snow, ‘Fall to the ground,’
and to the pouring rain, ‘Rain harder!’
7He makes it impossible to do anything #37:7 Or “He seals up every person’s hand.”
so that people will recognize his work.
8Animals go into their dens
and stay in their lairs.
9A storm comes out of its chamber.
It is cold because of the strong winds.
10God’s breath produces ice,
and the seas freeze over.
11Yes, he loads the thick clouds with moisture
and scatters his lightning from the clouds.
12He guides the clouds as they churn round and round
over the face of the inhabited earth
to do everything he orders them.
13Whether for discipline,
or for ⌞the good of⌟ his earth,
or out of mercy,
he makes the storm appear.
14“Open your ears to this, Job.
Stop and consider God’s miracles.
15Do you know how God controls them
and makes the lightning flash from his clouds?
16Do you know how the clouds drift
(these are the miracles of the one who knows everything),
17you whose clothes are hot and sweaty,
when the earth is calm under a south wind?
18Can you stretch out the skies with him
and make them as firm as a mirror made of metal?
19Teach us what we should say to him.
We are unable to prepare ⌞a case⌟ because of darkness.
20Should he be told that I want to speak?
Can a person speak when he is confused?
21People can’t look at the sun
when it’s bright among the clouds
or after the wind has blown and cleared those clouds away.
22A golden light comes from the north.
A terrifying majesty is around God.
23The Almighty, whom we can’t reach,
is great in power and judgment,
has more than enough righteousness,
and does not oppress.
24That is why people should fear him.
He does not respect those who think they’re wise.”
