Hosea 12
12
1Ephraim tries to herd the wind, chasing after the east wind all day long. Their lies and violence keep on increasing. They make a treaty with Assyria, and send olive oil to Egypt.#12:1. In other words, while making a treaty with Assyria they are covering their options by trying to gain support from Egypt as well by sending supplies of olive oil. 2The Lord also has an accusation against Judah, and will punish Jacob for the way the people act; he will repay them for what they have done. 3Even in the womb he fought with his brother;#12:3. Literally, “he grasped his brother's heel.” when he became a man he fought with God. 4He fought with the angel, and he won. He wept, and begged him for a blessing. Jacob found God at Bethel, and spoke with him there— 5the Lord God Almighty, the Lord is his memorable name! 6You must return to your God. Act lovingly and do what is right, and always wait for your God.
7A merchant who holds in his hands dishonest scales loves to swindle. 8Ephraim says, “I'm rich! I've made myself wealthy! I've made so much from my work, and nobody can prove me guilty of doing wrong.”
9But I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. I will make you live again in tents like you do at the time of that particular festival.#12:9. This refers to the Festival of Tabernacles where the people lived outside in tents or shelters for a week to remember their journey through the wilderness.
10I spoke through the prophets. I myself gave many visions and parables through the prophets.
11If Gilead is idolatrous,#12:11. The word used here is the same as in Beth-aven, the parody name for Bethel, signifying the worship of idols who are truly worthless, they are nothing. they will surely come to nothing. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls. Even their altars are like heaps of rocks in the furrows of the field.#12:11. This verse suggests mixed worship that merged idols with the true God. Like rocks in a plowed field, this was barrier to knowing the true God.
12Jacob fled to the land of Aram; Israel#12:12. Israel was the new name God gave to Jacob. worked there to gain a wife, earning a wife by looking after sheep. 13Through a prophet#12:13. The prophet referenced here is Moses. the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet they were cared for.#12:13. The same word is used for Jacob looking after sheep and the Lord looking after Israel through Moses.
14Ephraim has really upset the Lord, and the Lord will let them have the consequences of their bloodshed and pay them back for their contempt.

Hosea 12
12
Ephraim Rebuked for Falsehood and Oppression
1E´phra-im feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
2The Lord hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. 3#Gen 32.24-26.#Gen 25.26. He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: 4#Gen 28.10-22. yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Beth–el, and there he spake with us; 5even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial.#12.5 memorial or memorial name. 6Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. 8And E´phra-im said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labors they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin. 9#Lev 23.39-43. And I that am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
10I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets. 11Is there iniquity in Gil´e-ad? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields. 12#Gen 29.1-20. And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. 13#Exod 12.50,51. And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. 14E´phra-im provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
