Hosea 1
1
1The Lord sent a message to Hosea son of Beeri at the time when Uzziah, Jotham, and Ahaz were the kings of Judah, and Jeroboam son of Jehoash#1:1. Spelled here “Joash.” was the king of Israel. 2The Lord began speaking through Hosea by telling him, “Go and take a wife who is a prostitute and have children born to a prostitute,#1:2. Literally “children of prostitution.” There is much debate over this phrase. Some believe this indicates that Gomer had children as a result of her prostitution before marrying Hosea. Others believe this could have happened later as she returned to her former ways (note that only the first child, Jezreel, is clearly identified as being Hosea's). Still others believe that this means any children Hosea had with Gomer would be tainted by her reputation as a prostitute. because those living in this land have committed terrible prostitution by turning away from the Lord.”
3So Hosea went and married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim. She became pregnant and bore Hosea a son. 4The Lord told Hosea, “Call him Jezreel,#1:4. Jezreel means “the Lord will sow” (or scatter, since that was the way in which seed was sown). Jezreel was historically a place of much violence and bloodshed. because I am going to punish the house of Jehu for the blood he shed at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5On that day I will break Israel's military power in the valley of Jezreel.”
6Gomer became pregnant again and gave birth to a daughter. The Lord told Hosea, “Call her Lo-ruhamah,#1:6. The name means “unloved.” because I will no longer love the house of Israel and certainly not forgive them. 7But I will have pity on the house of Judah, and I will save them—but I will not save them by bow or sword or war or horses and riders.”
8After Gomer had weaned Lo-ruhamah she became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. 9The Lord told Hosea, “Call him Lo-ammi,#1:9. The name means “not my people.” because you are not my people and I am not your God.#1:9. Literally, “I am not yours.” 10Even so#1:10. “Even so”—transition supplied. The Hebrew simply says “and.” the number of the people of Israel will be like the sand on the seashore that cannot be measured or counted. Then right there at the place where they were told ‘you are not my people’ they will be called ‘the children of the living God.’ 11The people of Israel and the people of Judah will be gathered together and they will choose one leader for themselves and they will take possession of the land, and the day of Jezreel will be great.”

Hoshĕa (Hosea) 1
1
1The word of יהוה that came to Hoshĕa son of Be’ĕri, in the days of Uzziyah, Yotham, Aḥaz, and Yeḥizqiyah, sovereigns of Yehuḏah, and in the days of Yaroḇ‛am son of Yo’ash, sovereign of Yisra’ĕl.
2The beginning of the word of יהוה with Hoshĕa. And יהוה said to Hoshĕa, “Go, take yourself a woman of whoring and children of whoring, for the land has utterly whored away from יהוה.”
3So he went and took Gomer, daughter of Diḇlayim, and she conceived and bore him a son.
4And יהוה said to him, “Call his name Yizre‛ĕl, for in a little while I shall revenge the bloodshed of Yizre‛ĕl on the house of Yĕhu, and put an end to the reign of the house of Yisra’ĕl.
5“And it shall be in that day that I shall break the bow of Yisra’ĕl in the Valley of Yizre‛ĕl.”
6And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And He said to him, “Call her name Lo-Ruḥamah, for no longer do I have compassion on the house of Yisra’ĕl so as to forgive them at all.
7“But I shall have compassion on the house of Yehuḏah and save them by יהוה their Elohim, and not save them by bow or by sword or battle, by horses or horsemen.”
8And she weaned Lo-Ruḥamah, and conceived and bore a son,
9then He said, “Call his name Lo-Ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not for you.
10“Yet the number of the children of Yisra’ĕl shall be as the sand of the sea, which is not measured nor counted. And it shall be in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they shall be called, ‘You are the sons of the living Ěl.’
11“And the children of Yehuḏah and the children of Yisra’ĕl shall be gathered together, and appoint for themselves one head, and shall come up out of the earth, for great is the day of Yizre‛ĕl!
