1So we should pay even closer attention to what we've learned so we don't drift away from it. 2If the message the angels brought was trustworthy, and every sin and disobedient act brings its own consequence,#2:2. Literally, “receives its reward.” 3how will we escape if we don't pay attention to this great salvation that the Lord first announced, and then we had confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4God also testified through signs and miracles, by acts that show his power, and by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, given as he chose.
5It's not angels who will be in charge of the world to come that we're talking about. 6But as it's been said, “What are human beings that you should worry about them? What is a son of man#2:6. “Son of man”: in normal use means just a human being; however Jesus applied this generic term to himself. that you should care about him? 7You set him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, and placed him over all your creation.#2:7. Instead of just referring to humanity, this can also refer to Jesus: “You made him less than the angels for a while, and then you crowned him with glory and honor.” The whole passage can be seen in this dual way, referring to Jesus as the son of man, both representative and Savior of humanity. 8You gave him authority over everything.”#2:8. Again this can apply to humanity, God giving authority over the creatures as mentioned in Genesis 1, or it can apply to the authority of Jesus as Lord. Nothing was left out when God gave him authority over everything. However, we see that not everything is subject to his authority yet.
9But we see Jesus, for a little while placed a little lower than the angels, through the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor. Through God's grace Jesus experienced death for everyone.
10It was appropriate that God, who creates and maintains everything, should bring many of his children to glory, and to completely prepare through suffering the one who leads them to salvation. 11For both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy belong to the same family.#2:11. Literally, “all from one.” That's why he doesn't hesitate to call them “brothers,” 12saying “I will announce your name to my brothers; I will praise you among your people when they meet together.”#2:12. “Meet together”: the word is “ecclesia” which eventually came to mean “church.” The quotation is from Psalms 22:22. 13Also: “I will place my trust in him,” and “Here I am, together with the children God has given to me.”#2:13. Quoting Isaiah 8:17-18.
14Because the children share flesh and blood in common, he shared in this in the same way so that through death he could destroy the one that had the power of death—the devil— 15and free everyone who through fear of death were enslaved all their lives.
16Of course it's not angels he's concerned about; he's concerned to help the children of Abraham. 17That's why it was necessary for him to become like his brothers in everything, so that he could become a merciful and trustworthy high priest in the things of God, to forgive his people's sins. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

The Great Salvation
1That is why we must hold on all the more firmly to the truths we have heard, so that we will not be carried away. 2The message given to our ancestors by the angels was shown to be true, and those who did not follow it or obey it received the punishment they deserved. 3How, then, shall we escape if we pay no attention to such a great salvation? The Lord himself first announced this salvation, and those who heard him proved to us that it is true. 4At the same time God added his witness to theirs by performing all kinds of miracles and wonders and by distributing the gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his will.
The One Who Leads Us to Salvation
5God has not placed the angels as rulers over the new world to come—the world of which we speak. 6#Ps 8.4-6 Instead, as it is said somewhere in the Scriptures:
“What are human beings, O God, that you should think of them;
mere human beings, that you should care for them?
7You made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honor,#2.7: Many manuscripts add: You made them rulers over everything you made (see Ps 8.6).
8and made them rulers over all things.”
It says that God made them “rulers over all things”; this clearly includes everything. We do not, however, see human beings ruling over all things now. 9But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, so that through God's grace he should die for everyone. We see him now crowned with glory and honor because of the death he suffered. 10It was only right that God, who creates and preserves all things, should make Jesus perfect through suffering, in order to bring many children to share his glory. For Jesus is the one who leads them to salvation.
11He purifies people from their sins, and both he and those who are made pure all have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his family. 12#Ps 22.22 He says to God,
“I will tell my people what you have done;
I will praise you in their meeting.”

He also says, “I will put my trust in God.” And he also says, “Here I am with the children that God has given me.”
14Since the children, as he calls them, are people of flesh and blood, Jesus himself became like them and shared their human nature. He did this so that through his death he might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, 15and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death. 16#Is 41.8,9 For it is clear that it is not the angels that he helps. Instead, he helps the descendants of Abraham. 17This means that he had to become like his people in every way, in order to be their faithful and merciful High Priest in his service to God, so that the people's sins would be forgiven. 18And now he can help those who are tempted, because he himself was tempted and suffered.
