Exodus 17
17
1Then all the Israelites left the Desert of Sin, going from place to place as they followed the Lord's commands. They camped at Rephidim, but there wasn't any water for the people to drink. 2Some of them came and complained to Moses, saying, “Give us water to drink!”
“Why are you complaining to me?” Moses asked. “Why are you trying to challenge the Lord?”
3But the people were so thirsty for water there that they went on complaining to Moses, saying, “Why did you have to bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us and our children and livestock by thirst?”
4Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I going to do with these people? A bit more of this and they're going to stone me!”
5The Lord told Moses, “Go ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take with you the walking stick you used to hit the Nile, and just go on ahead. 6Look, I will stand there beside you by the rock at Horeb. When you hit the rock water will pour out for the people to drink.” So Moses did this as the elders of Israel watched. 7He called the place Massah and Meribah#17:7. Massah means “testing” and Meribah means “complaining.” because the Israelites argued there, and because they challenged the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord with us, or not?”
8Then some Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses told Joshua, “Choose some men and go out and fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I'll stand on the top of this hill holding the walking stick of God.”
10Joshua did what Moses told him and fought the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up the walking stick#17:11. “The walking stick”: implied. in his hands, the Israelites were the ones winning, but when he lowered them, it was the Amalekites. 12So when Moses' hands became heavy, the others took a stone and put it under him for him to sit on. Aaron and Hur stood on each side of Moses and held his hands up. In this way his hands were kept firmly up until the sun went down. 13As a result Joshua defeated the Amalekite army.
14The Lord told Moses, “Write all this down on a scroll as a reminder and read it out loud to Joshua, because I'm going to completely wipe out the Amalekites so nobody on earth will remember them.”
15Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my Banner of Victory.” 16“Hold up the victory banner of the Lord!”#17:16. Or “a hand was lifted up towards the Lord's throne.” The Hebrew is unclear. Moses declared. “The Lord will go on fighting the Amalekites for all generations!”

Exodus 17
17
Water Out of the Rock
1The whole community of Israel started out from the Desert of Sin. They traveled from place to place, just as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there wasn’t any water for the people to drink. 2So they argued with Moses. They said, “Give us water to drink.”
Moses replied, “Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the Lord?”
3But the people were thirsty for water there. So they told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you want us, our children and our livestock to die of thirst?”
4Then Moses cried out to the Lord. He said, “What am I going to do with these people? They are almost ready to kill me by throwing stones at me.”
5The Lord answered Moses. “Go out in front of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel along with you. Take in your hand the walking stick you used when you struck the Nile River. Go. 6I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched. 7Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the Lord. They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Joshua Wins the Battle Over the Amalekites
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I’ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me.”
10So Joshua fought against the Amalekites, just as Moses had ordered. Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites were winning. But every time he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win. 12When Moses’ arms got tired, Aaron and Hur got a stone and put it under him. Then he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset. 13So Joshua destroyed the Amalekite army with swords.
14Then the Lord said to Moses, “This is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.”
15Then Moses built an altar. He called it The Lord Is My Banner. 16He said, “The Amalekites opposed the authority of the Lord. So the Lord will fight against the Amalekites for all time to come.”
