Jeremiah 42
42
1Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near, 2and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we pray thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us: 3that the LORD thy God may shew us the way wherein we should walk, and the thing that we should do. 4Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you. 5Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness amongst us, if we do not even according to all the word wherewith the LORD thy God shall send thee to us. 6Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.
7And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah. 8Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, 9and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him: 10If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you. 11Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. 12And I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land. 13But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land; so that ye obey not the voice of the LORD your God; 14saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell: 15now therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah: thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there; 16then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feel shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye are afraid, shall follow hard after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. 17So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them. 18For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more. 19The LORD hath spoken concerning you, O remnant of Judah, Go ye not into Egypt: know certainly that I have testified unto you this day. 20For ye have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it: 21and I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in any thing for the which he hath sent me unto you. 22Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn there.

The Remnant Asks Jeremiah to Pray to Yahweh for Direction
1Then all the commanders of the armies, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, approached 2and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “May our plea please fall before you,#Literally “to the face of you” and pray for us to Yahweh your God, for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes are seeing us. 3And let Yahweh your God inform us the way in which we should go and the thing that we should do.” 4And Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard. Look, I am going to pray to Yahweh your God according to your words, and then#Literally “and it will happen” all the words#Hebrew “word” that Yahweh answers you I will tell you; I will not withhold from you a word.” 5Then they said to Jeremiah, “May Yahweh be against us as a true and faithful witness#Literally “a witness of faithfulness and trustworthy” if we do not do according to all the words#Hebrew “word” that Yahweh sends you for us. 6Whether good or bad, we will listen to the voice of Yahweh our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us when we listen to the voice of Yahweh our God.”
The Remnant Rejects the Word of Yahweh
7And then#Literally “And it was” at the end of ten days the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah. 8And he summoned Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, and all the people from the smallest to the greatest, 9and said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to cause your plea to fall before him:#Literally “to the face of him” 10‘If only you will stay in this land, then I will build you and I will not tear you down, and I will plant you and I will not pluck you up, for I relent of the disaster that I have brought to you. 11You must not be afraid of#Literally “from the face of” the king of Babylon whom you are afraid of.#Literally “in fear from the presence of him” You must not be afraid of him,’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, ‘for I am with you to save you and to deliver you from his hand. 12And I will show you compassion, and he will have compassion on you and will restore you to your soil.
13But if you are saying, “We will not stay in this land,” so as to not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, 14saying, “No, for we will go to the land of Egypt where we will not see war, and we will not hear the sound of a horn, and we will not be hungry for bread, and there we will stay,” 15then therefore#Literally “to thus” hear the word of Yahweh, O remnant of Judah. Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “If you are determined#Literally “If you indeed set your face” to go to Egypt, and you go to dwell as aliens there, 16then it will be that the sword that you are in fear of will overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine that you are anxious of will pursue after you there into Egypt, and there you will die. 17So all the people who are determined#Literally “have set their faces” to go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the plague, and there will not be for them an escapee or a survivor from the disaster that I am bringing upon them.” 18For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will pour out on you at your going to Egypt, and you will become a curse, and a horror, and a curse formula, and a disgrace, and you will no longer see this place.” ’
19Yahweh has spoken to you, O remnant of Judah, ‘You must not go to Egypt.’ You must certainly know that I have warned you today#Literally “the day” 20that you have made a fatal mistake,#Literally “you have caused them to err for your lives” for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘Pray for us to Yahweh our God, and all that Yahweh our God says, so tell us and we will do it.’#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation 21So I have told you today,#Literally “the day” and you have not listened to the voice of Yahweh your God, or of anything#Literally “all” that he sent me for you. 22Now then, certainly you must know that by the sword, by the famine, and by the plague you will die in the place where you desire to go, to dwell as aliens there.”
