3
1O Lord Almighty, thou God of Israel, #Cp. Tob. 3.1.the soul in anguish, the troubled spirit, crieth unto thee. 2Hear, O Lord, and have mercy; for thou art a merciful God: yea, have mercy upon us, because we have sinned before thee. 3For #Lam. 5. See Ps. 29.10.thou sittest as king for ever, and we perish evermore. 4O Lord Almighty, thou God of Israel, hear now the prayer of #3.4 Probably a mistake for the men of Israel.the #Cp. ver. 10,11.dead Israelites, and of the children of them which were sinners before thee, that hearkened not unto the voice of thee their God: #See ch. 1.20.for the which cause these plagues clave unto us. 5Remember not the iniquities of our fathers: but remember thy power and thy name now at this time. 6For thou art the Lord our God, and thee, O Lord, will we praise. 7For for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts, #3.7 Another reading isand made us to call.to the intent that we should call upon thy name: and we will praise thee in our captivity, #Deut. 30.1. 9Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: give ear to understand wisdom. 10How happeneth it, O Israel, that thou art in thine enemies' land, that thou art waxen old in a strange country, #Cp. ver. 4.that thou art defiled with the dead, 11That thou art counted #Ps. 28.1 & 88.4 & 143.7. Cp. ver.19.with them that go down into #3.11 Gr. Hades.the grave? 12Thou hast forsaken #Cp. Jer. 2.13.the fountain of wisdom. 13#See Is. 48.18. For if thou hadst walked in the way of God, thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever. 14Learn where is #3.14 Or prudencewisdom, where is strength, where is understanding; that thou mayest know also where is #See Prov. 3.2.length of days, and life, where is the light of the eyes, and peace. 15#Cp. Cp. 1 Chr. 5.10.sons also of Agar that seek understanding, which are in the land, the merchants of #Josh. 13.4.Merran and #See Jer. 49.7.Teman, and the authors of fables, and the searchers out of understanding; none of these have known the way of wisdom, or remembered her paths. 24O Israel, how great is the house of God! and how large is the place of his possession! 25Great, and hath none end; high, and unmeasurable. 26There were #See Wis. 14.6.the giants born that were famous of old, great of stature, and expert in war. 27These did not God choose, neither gave he #See ver. 20.the way of knowledge unto them: 28So they perished, because they had no #3.28 Or prudencewisdom, they perished through their own foolishness. 29#Deut. 30.12,13. Rom. 10.6,7.Who hath gone up into heaven, and taken her, and #Cp. Ecclus. 24.4.brought her down from the clouds? 30Who hath gone over the sea, and found her, and will bring her #Cp. Wis. 7.9. See Job 28.15-19.for choice gold? 31There is none that knoweth her way, nor any that comprehendeth her path. 32#Job 28.23.But he that knoweth all things knoweth her, he found her out with his understanding: he that prepared the earth for evermore hath filled it with fourfooted beasts: 33He that sendeth forth the light, and it goeth; he called it, and it obeyed him with fear: 34And the stars shined #Cp. Ecclus. 43.10.in their watches, and were glad: when #Cp. Ps. 147.4 & Is. 40.26.he called them, they said, Here we be; they shined with gladness unto him that made them. 35This is our God, and there shall none other be accounted of in comparison of him. 36#Job 28.23.He hath found out all the way of knowledge, and #Cp. Ecclus. 24.8. See Ps. 147.19.hath given it unto Jacob his servant, and to Israel that is beloved of him. 37Afterward did she appear upon earth, and #Cp. Prov. 8.31.was conversant with men.
