2 Samuel 22
22
1And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
2and he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine; 3The God of my rock, in him will I trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge; my saviour, thou savest me from violence. 4I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 5For the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. 6The cords of Sheol were round about me: the snares of death came upon me. 7In my distress I called upon the LORD, yea, I called unto my God: and he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came into his ears. 8Then the earth shook and trembled, the foundations of heaven moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. 9There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. 10He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and thick darkness was under his feet. 11And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he was seen upon the wings of the wind. 12And he made darkness pavilions round about him, gathering of waters, thick clouds of the skies. 13At the brightness before him coals of fire were kindled. 14The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. 15And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them. 16Then the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were laid bare, by the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. 17He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters; 18He delivered me from my strong enemy, from them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me. 19They came upon me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. 20He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. 21The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23For all his judgements were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them. 24I was also perfect toward him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity. 25Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eyesight. 26With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, with the perfect man thou wilt shew thyself perfect; 27With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the perverse thou wilt shew thyself froward. 28And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down. 29For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness. 30For by thee I run upon a troop: by my God do I leap over a wall. 31As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried; he is a shield unto all them that trust in him. 32For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? 33God is my strong fortress: and he guideth the perfect in his way. 34He maketh his feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places. 35He teacheth my hands to war; so that mine arms do bend a bow of brass. 36Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great. 37Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, and my feet have not slipped. 38I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; neither did I turn again till they were consumed. 39And I have consumed them, and smitten them through, that they cannot arise; yea, they are fallen under my feet. 40For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. 41Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me, that I might cut off them that hate me. 42They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. 43Then did I beat them small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the streets, and did spread them abroad. 44Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people; thou hast kept me to be the head of the nations: a people whom I have not known shall serve me. 45The strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me. 46The strangers shall fade away, and shall come trembling out of their close places. 47The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation: 48Even the God that executeth vengeance for me, and bringeth down peoples under me, 49And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: yea, thou liftest me up above them that rise up against me: thou deliverest me from the violent man. 50Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the nations, and will sing praises unto thy name. 51Great deliverance giveth he to his king: and sheweth lovingkindness to his anointed, to David and to his seed, for evermore.

David’s Song of Praise
1David sang this song to the Lord when the Lord saved him from Saul and all his other enemies. 2He said:
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my Savior.
3My God is my rock.
I can run to him for safety.
He is my shield and my saving strength,
my defender and my place of safety.
The Lord saves me from those who want to harm me.
4I will call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I will be saved from my enemies.
5“The waves of death came around me;
the deadly rivers overwhelmed me.
6The ropes of death wrapped around me.
The traps of death were before me.
7In my trouble I called to the Lord;
I cried out to my God.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my call for help reached his ears.
8“The earth trembled and shook.
The foundations of heaven began to shake.
They trembled because the Lord was angry.
9Smoke came out of his nose,
and burning fire came out of his mouth.
Burning coals went before him.
10He tore open the sky and came down
with dark clouds under his feet.
11He rode a creature with wings and flew.
He raced on the wings of the wind.
12He made darkness his shelter,
surrounded by fog and clouds.
13Out of the brightness of his presence
came flashes of lightning.
14The Lord thundered from heaven;
the Most High raised his voice.
15He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies.
His bolts of lightning confused them with fear.
16The Lord spoke strongly.
The wind blew from his nose.
Then the valleys of the sea appeared,
and the foundations of the earth were seen.
17“The Lord reached down from above and took me;
he pulled me from the deep water.
18He saved me from my powerful enemies,
from those who hated me, because they were too strong for me.
19They attacked me at my time of trouble,
but the Lord supported me.
20He took me to a safe place.
Because he delights in me, he saved me.
21“The Lord spared me because I did what was right.
Because I have not done evil, he has rewarded me.
22I have followed the ways of the Lord;
I have not done evil by turning from my God.
23I remember all his laws
and have not broken his rules.
24I am innocent before him;
I have kept myself from doing evil.
25The Lord rewarded me because I did what was right,
because I did what the Lord said was right.
26“Lord, you are loyal to those who are loyal,
and you are good to those who are good.
27You are pure to those who are pure,
but you are against those who are evil.
28You save the humble,
but you bring down those who are proud.
29Lord, you give light to my lamp.
The Lord brightens the darkness around me.
30With your help I can attack an army.
With God’s help I can jump over a wall.
31“The ways of God are without fault;
the Lord’s words are pure.
He is a shield to those who trust him.
32Who is God? Only the Lord.
Who is the Rock? Only our God.
33God is my protection.
He makes my way free from fault.
34He makes me like a deer that does not stumble;
he helps me stand on the steep mountains.
35He trains my hands for battle
so my arms can bend a bronze bow.
36You protect me with your saving shield.
You have stooped to make me great.
37You give me a better way to live,
so I live as you want me to.
38I chased my enemies and destroyed them.
I did not quit till they were destroyed.
39I destroyed and crushed them
so they couldn’t rise up again.
They fell beneath my feet.
40You gave me strength in battle.
You made my enemies bow before me.
41You made my enemies turn back,
and I destroyed those who hated me.
42They called for help,
but no one came to save them.
They called to the Lord,
but he did not answer them.
43I beat my enemies into pieces,
like dust on the ground.
I poured them out and walked on them
like mud in the streets.
44“You saved me when my people attacked me.
You kept me as the leader of nations.
People I never knew serve me.
45Foreigners obey me.
As soon as they hear me, they obey me.
46They all become afraid
and tremble in their hiding places.
47“The Lord lives!
May my Rock be praised!
Praise God, the Rock, who saves me!
48God gives me victory over my enemies
and brings people under my rule.
49He frees me from my enemies.
“You set me over those who hate me.
You saved me from violent people.
50So I will praise you, Lord, among the nations.
I will sing praises to your name.
51The Lord gives great victories to his king.
He is loyal to his appointed king,
to David and his descendants forever.”
