1Thus saith the Lord, #ch. 1.7.I brought this people out of bondage, and I gave them my commandments by my servants the prophets; #Cp. ch. 1.32.whom they would not hear, but set my counsels at nought. 2#Bar. 4.8,12. Cp. ver. 15,17,30.The mother that bare them saith unto them, #Bar. 4.19.Go your way, O my children; #Bar. 4.12. Cp. Is. 47.8,9.for I am a widow and forsaken. 3#Cp. Bar. 4.11.I brought you up with gladness, and with sorrow and heaviness have I lost you: for ye have sinned before the Lord God, and done that which is evil before me. 4#Bar. 4.17.But what shall I now do unto you? #Bar. 4.12. Is. 47.8,9.for I am a widow and forsaken: #Bar. 4.21.go your way, O my children, and ask mercy of the Lord. 5As for me, O father, I call upon thee for a witness over the mother of these children, because they would not keep my covenant, 6That thou bring them to confusion, #Cp. 10Thus saith the Lord unto Esdras, Tell my people that I will give them the kingdom of Jerusalem, which I would have given unto Israel. 11Their glory also will I take unto me, and give these #Cp. Luke 16.9.the everlasting tabernacles, which I had prepared for them. 12They shall have #ch. 8.52. Rev. 2.7 & 22.2,14.the tree of life for an ointment of sweet savour; they shall neither labour, nor be weary. 13#2.13 Another reading is Go.#Mat. 7.7. Luke 11.9.Ask, and ye shall receive: pray for few days unto you, #Mat. 24.22.that they may be shortened: #Cp. Mat. 25.34.the kingdom is already prepared for you: #Mark 13.37.watch. 14#See Deut. 4.26.Take heaven and earth to witness, take them to witness; for I have given up the evil, and created the good: for I live, saith the Lord.

Mat. 16.14.Jeremy, after whose counsel I have sanctified and prepared for thee #Cp. Rev. 22.2.twelve trees laden with divers fruits, 19And as many fountains flowing with milk and honey, and seven mighty mountains, whereupon there grow roses and lilies, whereby I will fill thy children with joy. 20#See Ex. 22.22.Do right to the widow, judge the fatherless, give to the poor, defend the orphan, #Cp. Is. 58.7 & Mat. 25.36.clothe the naked, 21Heal the broken and the weak, laugh not a lame man to scorn, defend the maimed, and let the blind man come unto the sight of my glory. 22Keep the old and young within thy walls. 23#Cp. Ex. 14.14 & Is. 30.15.Abide still, O my people, and take thy rest, for thy quietness shall come. 25Nourish thy children, O thou good nurse, and #ver. 15.stablish their feet. 26As for the servants whom I have given thee, there shall not one of them perish; for I will require them from among thy number. 27Be not careful overmuch: for when the day of tribulation and anguish cometh, #Cp. John 16.20,22.others shall weep and be sorrowful, but thou shalt be merry and have abundance. 28The nations shall envy thee, but they shall be able to do nothing against thee, saith the Lord. 29#Cp. Is. 49.2 & 51.16 & Wis. 5.16.My hands shall cover thee, so that thy children see not #2.29 Lat. Gehenna.hell. 30Be joyful, #ver. 2,15,17.O thou mother, with thy children; for I will deliver thee, saith the Lord. 31#Cp. ver.16.Remember thy children that sleep, for I shall bring them out of the secret places of the earth, and shew mercy unto them: for I am merciful, saith the Lord Almighty. 32Embrace thy children until I come, and proclaim mercy unto them: for my wells run over, and my grace shall not fail.
33I ESDRAS received a charge from the Lord upon #See Ex. 3.1.the mount Horeb, that I should go unto Israel; but when I came unto them, they would none of me, and rejected the commandment of the Lord. 34And therefore I say unto you, O ye nations, that hear and understand, look for #John 10.11. 1 Pet. 2.25.your shepherd, he shall give you everlasting #Mat. 11.29.rest; #Heb. 10.37.for he is nigh at hand, #Cp. Heb. 1.2.that shall come in the end of the world. 35Be ready to #See ch. 13.56.the rewards of the kingdom, for #Cp. Is. 60.19,20 & Rev. 21.23 & 22.5.the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore. 36Flee #Cp. 1 Cor. 7.31. See 1 Chr. 29.15.the shadow of this world, receive the joyfulness of #Cp. Is. 60.19,20 & Rev. 21.23 & 22.5.your glory: I call to witness my saviour openly. 37O receive that which is given you of the Lord, and be joyful, giving thanks unto him #1 Thes. 2.12.that hath called you to heavenly kingdoms. 38Arise up and stand, and behold #Cp. Rev. 7.4.the number of #ch. 6.5.those that be sealed #Rev. 19.9. Cp. Mat. 22.2.in the feast of the Lord; 39They that withdrew them from #Cp. 1 Cor. 7.31. See 1 Chr. 29.15.the shadow of the world have received #Is. 61.10. Rev. 3.4 & 7.13,14.glorious garments of the Lord. 40#2.40 Another reading is Take.Look upon thy number, O Sion, and make up the reckoning of those of thine that are #Is. 61.10. Rev. 3.4 & 7.13,14.clothed in white, which have fulfilled the law of the Lord. 41#Cp. ch. 4.36 & Rev. 6.11.The number of thy children, whom thou longedst for, is fulfilled: beseech the power of the Lord, that thy people, which have been called from the beginning, may be hallowed.
42I Esdras saw upon #Cp. Rev. 14.1.the mount Sion #Cp. Rev. 7.9.a great multitude, whom I could not number, and they all praised the Lord with songs. 43And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature, taller than all the rest, and upon every one of their heads #Cp. Rev. 2.10 & 4.4.he set crowns, and was more exalted; whereat I marvelled greatly. 44So I asked the angel, and said, #Cp. Rev. 7.13,14.What are these, my Lord? 45He answered and said unto me, These be they that have put off #Cp. 1 Cor. 15.53,54 & 2 Cor. 5.4.the mortal clothing, and put on the immortal, and have confessed the name of God: now are they crowned, and #Cp. Rev. 7.9.receive palms. 46Then said I unto the angel, What young man is he that setteth crowns upon them, and giveth them palms in their hands? 47So he answered and said unto me, It is the Son of God, #Mat. 10.32. Luke 12.8. Rev. 3.5.whom they have confessed in the world. Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stiffly for the name of the Lord. 48Then the angel said unto me, Go thy way, and tell my people what manner of things, and how great wonders of the Lord God thou hast seen.
