“Look out! Look out! Flee from Babylon,” declares YAHWEH, “for like the four winds of heaven I have scattered you in every direction,” declares YAHWEH. “Escape, Zion, you who live within the fair city of Babylon!” For YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, sent me after glory. And he warns the nations who plundered you: “Whoever touches you, my precious ones, touches the apple of my eye. Now behold, I will raise my fist against them to crush them, and those whom they enslaved will plunder them. Then you will know that YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, has sent me.” I, YAHWEH, declare to you: “It’s time to sing out and rejoice, my daughter Zion, for now I am coming to live among you.” At that time, people from many nations will be converted to YAHWEH and become his people, and he will live among them. Then you will know that YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, has sent me to you. The people of Judah will become YAHWEH’s special people, his inheritance in the holy land, and he will again choose Jerusalem. Let everyone be silent before YAHWEH, for now he is stirring from his holy dwelling place.

Often we are caught up in the urgent demands of the day-to-day, and then years go by, and we realize we have not been making the small choices that will get us where we actually wanted to be. Learn how Zerubbabel set an example of persevering and saying YES to the next small brave step God asked of him.
The call for God's covenant people, in Zechariah 9:12, ‘Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope’, is the key verse for this series. The hope that Zechariah proclaims is hope in God as King, hope that God has come to dwell with us, and hope that the covenant between God and God’s people will be restored. This is the sure hope that holds us captive.

Like Haggai, Zechariah prophesies during the post-exilic period as Israel began resettling in the Promised Land. Zechariah encourages Israel to remain faithful and prophesies of a coming righteous King who will bring salvation to His people (Zechariah 9:10). This book reminds us that we too must be to what God has called us to, always hopefully anticipating when God Himself “will be king over all the earth” (Zechariah 14:9).
