For I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for battle. The city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half the people will go into exile, but the rest will be allowed to remain in the city. Then YAHWEH will intervene and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. On that day, his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem. Then the Mount of Olives will be divided down the middle, forming a wide valley that runs from east to west. So half the Mount will move backward to the north and the other half to the south.

People will live there securely, for the city will never again be doomed to destruction. Jerusalem will be safe to live in. And YAHWEH will bring a devastating plague upon all the nations who have fought against Jerusalem. Their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet. Their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. And on that day, YAHWEH will cause their hearts to panic. Each one will seize his neighbor and strike him. Fighting will break out one against another until even the people of Judah will fight against the people of Jerusalem. The people of Jerusalem will gather all the riches of the surrounding nations: vast amounts of gold, silver, and clothing. And a similar plague will afflict the horses, mules, camels, donkeys, and all the other animals in the camp of their enemies. Afterward, the survivors of all the nations that have attacked the city will return to Jerusalem each year to worship the King of the world, YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. And if any of the people groups of the world do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King of the world, YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, no rain will fall upon their land. And if the Egyptian people do not make this pilgrimage, then YAHWEH will send the same plague he sent the other nations that did not celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. This will be the punishment for Egypt and the punishment for all the nations that fail to come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

If we are honest, we admit that the Bible can be confusing, even the New Testament. But to truly understand and apply the Bible well, we need to understand the cultural background of the passages we are reading. This 10-day plan is based on Craig Keener's New Testament Background course on Seminary Now.

Like Haggai, Zechariah prophesies during the post-exilic period as Israel began resettling in the Promised Land. Zechariah encourages Israel to remain faithful and prophesies of a coming righteous King who will bring salvation to His people (Zechariah 9:10). This book reminds us that we too must be to what God has called us to, always hopefully anticipating when God Himself “will be king over all the earth” (Zechariah 14:9).
