Revelation 22

22
Eden Restored
1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, # 22:1 See Gen. 2:10–14; Ps. 46:4; Ezek. 47:1–12; Joel 3:18; John 4:10–14. flowing with water clear as crystal, continuously pouring out from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2The river was flowing in the middle of the street of the city, and on either side of the river was the Tree of Life, # 22:2 See Gen. 2:9. with its twelve kinds of ripe fruit according to each month of the year. The leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing # 22:2 Or “are given for service” (nurture and care) of the nations. of the nations.
3And every curse will be broken and no longer exist, for the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there in the city.
His loving servants will serve # 22:3 Or “worship.” him; 4they will always see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5Night will be no more. They will never need the light of the sun or a lamp, because the Lord God will shine on them.
And they will reign as kings forever and ever! # 22:5 Verses 1–5 show us that the garden of Eden will be fully restored, and it is described as the heavenly Jerusalem.
The Testimony of the Angel
6Then the angel said to me, “These words are entirely trustworthy and true, for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his loving servants what must occur swiftly.” # 22:6 Or “what must soon be.” This does not necessarily mean soon from the writer’s perspective, but that once the time comes it will happen quickly. The Greek phrase en tachos (similar to “tachometer”) means that once something starts it will take place swiftly. See also Rev. 1:1.
The Testimony of Jesus
7“Behold, I come quickly! # 22:7 Or “I am continuously coming swiftly.”
Wonderfully blessed is the one
who carefully guards the words
of the prophecy of this book!”
The Testimony of John
8I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things, and when I heard and saw it all, I fell facedown to worship the messenger who showed me these things. 9But he said to me, “Don’t do it! I am but a fellow servant with you and your brothers, the prophets, and with those who cling to the words of this book. Worship God!”
10And he said to me, “Don’t keep secret the prophetic words of this book, for the time is near. 11Let the evildoers be at their worst and the morally filthy continue in their depravity—yet the righteous will still do what is right, and the holy will still be holy.” # 22:11 Or “let the righteous still do what is right, and let the holy ones still be holy.”
Jesus’ Final Words and John’s Final Testimony
12“Behold, I am coming quickly! # 22:12 See footnote for v. 6.
I bring my reward with me
to repay everyone according to their works.
13I am the Aleph and the Tav, # 22:13 See footnote for Rev. 1:8.
the First and the Last,
the Beginning and the Completion.”
14Wonderfully blessed are those who wash their robes white so they can access the Tree of Life and enter the city of bliss by its open gates. 15Those not permitted to enter are outside: the malicious hypocrites, # 22:15 Or “dogs,” a likely metaphor of those who pretend to follow Christ while hiding their immorality. the sexually immoral, sorcerers, # 22:15 The Greek word used here implies drug usage. murderers, idolaters, and every lover of lies.
16“I, Jesus, sent my angel to you to give you this testimony # 22:16 Or “to testify to these things.” to share with the congregations. I am the bright Morning Star, both David’s spiritual root # 22:16 Or “scion.” See Isa. 11:1, 10. As the spiritual root of David, Jesus is divine. As the descendant of David, he is human. and his descendant.” # 22:16 Or “family of David.” As the Lord of glory, Jesus is the bright Morning Star who signals the end of night and the beginning of God’s perfect day (Num. 24:17). As the Son of Man, he is the descendant of David. Jesus is both human and divine, even in his eternal state.
17“Come,” # 22:17 Or “be continuously coming”; also in each instance of the word come in this verse and v. 20. says the Holy Spirit and the Bride in divine duet. Let everyone who hears this duet join them in saying, “Come.” Let everyone gripped with spiritual thirst say, “Come.” And let everyone who craves the gift of living water # 22:17 See John 7:37. come and drink it freely. “Come.”
18I testify to everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19And if anyone subtracts from the prophetic words of this book, God will remove his portion from the Tree of Life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
20The one who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
21May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the holy believers. Amen!
