Mark 16

The Resurrection of Jesus
1-2On the first day of the week, as the Sabbath was ending, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jacob, and Salome made their way to the tomb. It was very early in the morning as the first streaks of light were beginning to be seen in the sky. They had purchased aromatic embalming spices so that they might anoint his body. 3And they had been asking one another, “Who can roll away the heavy stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4But when they arrived, they discovered that the very large stone was already rolled away! 5And as they stepped into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right, dressed in a long white robe. The women were startled and amazed. 6But the angel # 16:6 See Matt. 28:2. said to them, “Don’t be afraid. I know that you’re here looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here—he has risen victoriously! Look! See the place where they laid him. 7Run and tell his disciples, even Peter, that he is risen. He has gone ahead of you into Galilee and you will see him there, just like he told you.”
8They staggered out of the tomb, awestruck, # 16:8 Or “trembling” (with astonishment). with their minds swirling. They ran to tell the disciples, but they were so afraid and amazed, they said nothing to anyone. # 16:8 Some early manuscripts of Mark do not include vv. 9–20. They are found in the Aramaic. A shorter ending to Mark found in a few manuscripts reads, “They reported briefly to those around Peter all that they had been commanded. After these things, Jesus himself commissioned them to take the message from the east to the west—the holy and imperishable preaching of eternal salvation. Amen.”
Jesus Appears to Some of His Followers
9Early on the first day of the week, after rising from the dead, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10After she had seen Jesus, she ran to tell his disciples, who were all emotionally devastated and weeping. 11Excitedly, Mary told them, “He’s alive and I’ve seen him!” But even after hearing this, they didn’t believe her.
12After this, Jesus appeared to two of the disciples, who were on their way to another village, # 16:12 Or “to the country.” See Luke 24:13–35. appearing in a form they did not recognize. 13They went back to Jerusalem to tell the rest of the disciples, but they didn’t believe it was true.
14Then Jesus appeared # 16:14 Or “manifested” or “became visible” (in clear light). before the eleven apostles as they were eating a meal. He corrected them for having such hard, unbelieving hearts because they did not believe those who saw him after his resurrection.
15And he said to them, “As you go into all the world, preach openly the wonderful news of the gospel to the entire human race! 16Whoever believes the good news and is baptized will be saved, and whoever does not believe the good news will be condemned. 17And these miracle signs will accompany those who believe: They will drive out demons in the power of my name. They will speak in tongues. 18They will be supernaturally protected from snakes and from drinking anything poisonous. # 16:18 Or “They will pick up snakes and be unharmed, and whatever poison they drink will not hurt them.” Some scholars believe that this sentence contains two Aramaic idioms. To pick up snakes could be a picture of overcoming one’s enemies (“snakes”), and drinking poison may be speaking of dealing with attacks on one’s character (poisonous words). The imagery is from Ps. 91:13. And they will lay hands on the sick and heal them.”
19After saying these things, Jesus was lifted up into heaven and sat down at the place of honor at the right hand of God! # 16:19 The Greek is literally “out of the right-sidednesses [plural] of God.” 20And the apostles went out announcing the good news everywhere, as the Lord himself consistently worked with them, validating the message they preached with miracle-signs that accompanied them!

Resurrection Morning
1When # 16:1–4 Mt 28:1; Lk 24:1–2 the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, # 16:1 Mk 15:40 Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him. 2Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, # 16:2 Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 they went to the tomb # 16:2 Jn 5:28 at sunrise. 3They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us? ” 4Looking up, they noticed that the stone — which was very large — had been rolled away.
5When # 16:5–8 Mt 28:5–8; Lk 24:3–8; Jn 20:1–2 they entered the tomb, # 16:5 Jn 5:28 they saw a young man # 16:5 Lk 7:14 dressed # 16:5 Lk 12:27 in a white # 16:5 Rv 3:4 robe sitting on the right side; they were alarmed. 6“Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, # 16:6 Mk 14:67 who was crucified. He has risen! # 16:6 1Co 15:4 He is not here. See the place where they put him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, # 16:7 Lk 6:14 ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; # 16:7 Mt 17:22 you will see him there just as he told you.’ ”
8They went out and ran from the tomb, # 16:8 Jn 5:28 because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone, # 16:8 Mk 1:44; 4:40 since they were afraid.

[Some of the earliest mss conclude with 16:8.] # 16:8 Other mss include vv. 9–20 as a longer ending. The following shorter ending is found in some mss between v. 8 and v. 9 and in one ms after v. 8 (each of which omits vv. 9–20): And all that had been commanded to them they quickly reported to those around Peter. After these things, Jesus himself sent out through them from east to west, the holy and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.
The Longer Ending of Mark: Appearances of the Risen Lord
[9Early # 16:9–11 Jn 20:11–18 on the first day of the week, # 16:9 Lk 24:1; Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 after he had risen, # 16:9 Lk 18:33; Ac 2:24 he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, # 16:9 Mk 15:40 out of whom he had driven seven demons. # 16:9 Mk 3:15; Lk 8:2 10She went and reported to those who had been with him, as they were mourning and weeping. 11Yet, when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it. # 16:11 Lk 24:5,11,23
12After this, he appeared # 16:12 Jn 21:1; 2Co 4:11 in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country. # 16:12 Lk 24:13–35 13And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.
The Great Commission
14Later he appeared to the Eleven # 16:14 Lk 24:9 themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw him after he had risen. # 16:14 Lk 24:38,41 15Then # 16:15–18 Mt 28:16–20 he said to them, “Go into all the world # 16:15 Mt 13:38; 1Jn 2:2 and preach the gospel to all creation. # 16:15 Rm 8:22 16Whoever believes # 16:16 Mk 11:24; Jn 3:16; Ac 10:43; Rm 10:9; 1Pt 1:8–10 and is baptized will be saved, # 16:16 Ac 2:38; 22:16 but whoever does not believe will be condemned. # 16:16 Mt 12:41; Jn 3:18,36; 5:11; 20:23 17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; # 16:17 = languages 18they will pick up snakes; # 16:18 Other mss add with their hands,# 16:18 Lk 10:19; Ac 28:3–6 if they should drink anything deadly, it will not harm # 16:18 Ac 28:5 them; they will lay hands on # 16:18 Ac 9:12,17; 1Tm 5:22 the sick, and they will get well.”
The Ascension
19So the Lord Jesus, after speaking to them, # 16:19 Lk 24:3 was taken up into heaven # 16:19 Lk 24:51; Ac 1:2,11,22; 1Tm 3:16 and sat down at the right hand # 16:19 Lk 22:69; Heb 10:12 of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word by the accompanying signs.]
