A Prophecy regarding Cush
1Ah, the land of whirring wings, # 18:1 Or “locusts.”
that is beyond the rivers of Cush, # 18:1 The Hebrew word kuwsh (Ethiopia, or modern-day Sudan) means “burned” or “darkened.”
2sending their messengers by the way of the Nile
in papyrus vessels gliding on the water!
Go, you swift messengers,
to a tall, smooth-skinned people # 18:2 The meaning of this Hebrew clause is uncertain. feared far and wide,
to a mighty conquering nation whose land the rivers divide. # 18:2 That is, the Upper Nile region. The land is divided by the White Nile and the Blue Nile rivers.
3Everyone everywhere, all who dwell on the earth,
when a signal flag is raised on the mountain, take notice!
When the shofar is blown, listen!
4Here is what the Lord Yahweh said to me:
“I will rest calm and confident # 18:4 See Isa. 57:20; 62:1; Heb. 3–4. as I look from my dwelling place, # 18:4 The body of Christ is now his dwelling place (see Eph. 2:19–22).
serene as on a pleasant summer day # 18:4 The meaning of this Hebrew clause is uncertain.
or as a cool, refreshing cloud # 18:4 See Isa. 19:1; 25:5; 44:22; 60:8. in the heat of harvest.”
5Before the harvest, when the bud is ripening
and the flower finishes, he will take his pruning hooks
and cut off the shoots and remove them.
6They will all be left for the birds of prey on the mountains
and for the wild animals to devour.
Birds will eat them throughout the summer,
and the animals will gnaw on the bones of the fallen all winter. # 18:6 Scripture often mentions birds of prey and wild animals as symbols of demonic powers.
7At that time, a tall, smooth-skinned people will bring gifts of tribute # 18:7 See Pss. 68:28–29; 76:11; Matt. 2:11.
to the Lord Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies.
They are a people feared far and wide,
a mighty conquering nation whose land the rivers divide.
They will bring their gifts to Mount Zion,
the place of the name of the Lord Yahweh,
Commander of Angel Armies.

A Prophecy concerning Ethiopia
1 #
Zeph 2.12. Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia: 2that sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled! 3All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye.
4For so the Lord said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest. 5For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches. 6They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
7In that time shall the present be brought unto the Lord of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the mount Zion.
