Does the lion roar in the bush if it has no prey? Does the lion growl in his lair if it has seized nothing? Does a bird alight on a trap on the ground if there is no bait inside? Does the net spring up from the ground if it has caught nothing? Does the war trumpet sound in the city without the people being frightened? Does calamity come to a city if it has not passed through YAHWEH’s hands? Indeed, Lord YAHWEH does nothing without revealing his secrets to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared! Who is not afraid? Lord YAHWEH has spoken! Who will not prophesy? Proclaim to the strongholds of Assyria and Egypt, and say to them, “Gather on the hills around Samaria; take a good, hard look at the rampant disorder within the city and see how oppressed the people are.”

Written by the shepherd-prophet Amos, this book exposes Israel's sinful religious hypocrisy and corrupt leadership. Amos prophesies against their rejection of God's law and the terrible social injustice perpetrated against the poor and vulnerable. As Amos foretells judgment on many nations, including Israel, we are reminded of the ultimate need for restoration and the promise of greater redemption.

The book of Jonah is a special Bible book. It is about a prophet who does not want to obey his commission. Jonah knows that God is gracious to people who don’t deserve it, and he does not want God to show mercy to his enemies. This reading plan follows the story about Jonah’s rebellion and God’s undeserved mercy, and searches how these themes are relevant to our lives too.

Amos was a prophet on a mission to shake Israel out of their moral complacency. He prophesied during a time of great stability and prosperity when Israel had abandoned God and neglected the vulnerable in society. His no-holds-barred message is a warning and a plea to God’s people, urging them to turn back to the Lord. Matt Fuller will help you to apply the teaching of Amos to your own life.
