an envoy has been sent # 1 Is 18:2; 30:4 among the nations:
“Rise up, # 1 Jr 6:4–5 and let’s go to war against her.” # 1 = Edom
2Look, I will make you insignificant # 2 Nm 24:18; Is 23:9

4Though you seem to soar # 4 Or to build high like an eagle # 4 Jb 20:6–7; Hab 2:9
and make your nest among the stars, # 4 Is 14:12–15
even from there I will bring you down.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
5If thieves came to you, # 5 Jr 49:9
if marauders by night —
how ravaged you would be! —
wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted?
If grape harvesters came to you,
wouldn’t they leave a few grapes? # 5 Lv 19:10; 25:5,11
6How Esau will be pillaged, # 6 Jr 49:10
his hidden treasures searched out! # 6 Mal 1:2–3
7Everyone who has a treaty with you # 7 Ps 55:20; Jr 30:14; Am 1:9
will drive you to the border;
everyone at peace with you

Those who eat your bread # 7 Ps 41:9
will set # 7 Some LXX mss, Sym, Tg, Vg; MT reads They will set your bread as a trap for you.
He will be unaware of it. # 7 Jr 49:7
8In that day —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom # 8 Jb 4:1; 5:12–14
and those who understand
from the hill country of Esau?
9Teman, # 9 = a region or city in Edom,# 9 Gn 36:11; 1Ch 1:45; Jb 2:11; Hab 3:3 your warriors # 9 Jr 49:22 will be terrified

Edom’s Sins against Judah
10You will be covered with shame
and destroyed forever
because of violence done to your brother Jacob. # 10 Ezk 25:12–14; Jl 3:19; Am 1:11
11On the day you stood aloof, # 11 Ps 83:5–6; 137:7; Am 1:6,9
on the day strangers captured his wealth, # 11 Or forces
while foreigners entered his city gate
and cast lots for Jerusalem, # 11 Jl 3:3; Nah 3:10
you were just like one of them. # 11 2Ch 21:17; Ezk 35:10
12Do not # 12–14 Or You should not throughout vv. 12–14 gloat over your brother # 12 Mc 4:11; 7:10

in the day of their disaster. # 13 Ezk 35:5
Yes, you — do not gloat over their misery
in the day of their disaster,
and do not appropriate their possessions # 13 Ezk 35:10; 36:2–3
in the day of their disaster.
14Do not stand at the crossroads # 14 Hb obscure,# 14 Is 16:3–4

in the day of distress.
Judgment of the Nations
15For the day of the Lord # 15 Jl 1:15; 2:1,11,31; Am 5:18,20 is near,
against all the nations. # 15 Is 13:6; Jl 3:14; Zph 1:7,14
As you have done, # 15 Jr 50:29; 51:56 it will be done to you;
what you deserve will return on your own head. # 15 Jr 50:15; Ezk 35:11
16As you have drunk on my holy mountain, # 16 Jr 49:12
so all the nations will drink continually. # 16 Is 51:22–23
They will drink and gulp down
and be as though they had never been.
17But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion, # 17 Is 4:2–3
and it will be holy; # 16–17 Is 66:20; Jl 2:32
the house of Jacob will dispossess # 17 Is 14:1–2; Am 9:11–15
those who dispossessed them. # 17 DSS, LXX, Syr, Vg, Tg; MT reads Jacob will possess its inheritance,# 17 Ezk 36:2–5
18Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, # 18 Is 5:24; 9:18–19; Am 1:12; Zch 12:6
and the house of Joseph, a burning flame,
but the house of Esau will be stubble;

Ovadyah 1
1
1The chazon (vision) of Ovadyah.
Thus saith Adonoi Hashem concerning Edom:
We have heard a report from Hashem,
and an envoy is sent among the Goyim,
Arise ye, and let us rise up against her (Edom) in battle.
2Hinei, I have made thee small among the Goyim;
thou art greatly despised.
3The zadon (pride, presumption, arrogance) of thine lev (heart) hath deceived thee,
thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock,
whose habitation is high;
that saith in his lev:
Who shall bring me down to the ground?
4Though thou exalt thyself to soar as the nesher,
and though thou set thy nest among the kokhavim (stars),
thence will I bring thee down,
saith Hashem.
5If ganavim (thieves) came to thee, if shodedei lailah (robbers by night) —
oh how art thou cut off!
— would they not have stolen only till they had enough?
If the grape gatherers came to thee,
would they not leave some grapes?
6How is Esav searched out!
How are his hidden treasures pillaged!
7All the men of thy alliance
have forced thee and brought thee even to the border;
the anshei shlomecha (the men that were at peace with thee) have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee;
they that eat thy lechem (bread)
have laid a mazor (net, trap) under thee;
there is none detecting it.
8Shall I not in that day, saith Hashem,
even destroy the chachamim (wise men) out of Edom,
and understanding out of the Har Esav?
9And thy gibborim (mighty men), O Teman, shall be dismayed and lose courage,
to the end that every one of the Har Esav
may be cut off by slaughter.
10For thy chamas against thy brother Ya'akov,
bushah (shame) shall cover thee,
and thou shalt be cut off l'olam (for ever).
11In the day that thou stood aloof on the other side,
in the day that the zarim (strangers) carried away captive his forces,
and foreigners entered into his gates,
and cast lots for Yerushalayim,
even thou wast as one of them.
12But thou shouldest not have gloated over the day
of thy brother in the day of his misfortune;
neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the Bnei Yehudah
in the day of their destruction;
neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly
in the Yom Tzarah (Day of Trouble).
13Thou shouldest not have entered into the sha'ar Ami (gate of My people)
in the day of their calamity;
yea, thou shouldest not have looked down on their affliction
in the day of their calamity,
nor have laid hands on their substance
in the day of their calamity;
14Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossroads,
to cut off those of his that did escape;
neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did survive
in the Yom Tzarah.
15For the Yom Hashem is near upon all the Goyim:
as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee:
thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
16For as ye have drunk upon My Har Kodesh (Holy Mountain),
so shall all the Goyim drink continually;
yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down,
and they shall be as though they had not been.
17But upon Mount Tziyon shall be deliverance,
and there shall be kodesh (holiness);
and the Beis Ya'akov shall possess their inheritances.
18And the Beis Ya'akov shall be an eish (fire),
and the Beis Yosef a flame,
and the Beis Esav for stubble,
and they shall kindle in them, and devour them;
and there shall not be any remaining of the Beis Esav;
for Hashem hath spoken.
19And they of the Negev shall possess Har Esav;
and they of the Shefelah, the Philistines;
and they shall possess the fields of Ephrayim,
and the fields of Shomron;
and Binyamin shall possess Gil'ad.
20And those of the Golus of Bnei Yisroel
shall possess that of the Kena'anim, even unto Tzarphat;
and those of the Golus of Yerushalayim, which is in Sepharad,
shall possess the cities of the Negev.
21And Moshi'im (Deliverers) shall come up on Mount Tziyon
to judge the Har Esav;
and HaMamlachah (the Kingdom) shall be Hashemʼs.
