Two Silver Trumpets
1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Make two trumpets of hammered silver to summon the community # 10:2 Jl 2:15–16 and have the camps set out. 3When both are sounded in long blasts, the entire community is to gather before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 4However, if one is sounded, only the leaders, the heads of Israel’s clans, # 10:4 Nm 1:5–16 are to gather before you.
5“When you sound short blasts, the camps pitched on the east # 10:5 Nm 2:3–9; 10:14–16 are to set out. 6When you sound short blasts a second time, the camps pitched on the south # 10:6 Nm 2:10–16; 10:18–20 are to set out. Short blasts are to be sounded for them to set out. 7When calling the assembly together, you are to sound long blasts, not short ones. 8The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to sound the trumpets. Your use of these is a permanent statute throughout your generations.
9“When you enter into battle in your land against an adversary who is attacking you, sound short blasts on the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the Lord your God and be saved from your enemies. # 10:9 Dt 20:4; 2Ch 13:12; Ps 18:3 10You are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and your fellowship sacrifices and on your joyous occasions, your appointed festivals, and the beginning of each of your months. They will serve as a reminder for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.” # 10:10 Ex 6:7; Lv 18:2,4,30; 19:2–4
From Sinai to Paran
11During the second year, in the second month on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud was lifted up above the tabernacle of the testimony. 12The Israelites traveled on from the Wilderness of Sinai, moving from one place to the next # 10:12 Ex 17:1; 19:1; Nm 1:1 until the cloud stopped in the Wilderness of Paran. # 10:12 Gn 21:21; Nm 12:16; 13:3,26; 1Sm 25:1 13They set out for the first time according to the Lord’s command through Moses. # 10:13 Nm 9:18–23
14The military divisions of the camp of Judah’s descendants with their banner set out first, and Nahshon son of Amminadab # 10:14 Nm 1:7; 2:3; 7:12; 1Ch 2:10 was over their divisions. 15Nethanel son of Zuar # 10:15 Nm 1:8; 2:5; 7:18 was over the division of the tribe of Issachar’s descendants, 16and Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun’s descendants. 17The tabernacle was then taken down, and the Gershonites and the Merarites set out, transporting the tabernacle.
18The military divisions of the camp of Reuben with their banner set out, and Elizur son of Shedeur was over their divisions. 19Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai # 10:19 Nm 1:6; 2:12; 7:36 was over the division of the tribe of Simeon’s descendants, 20and Eliasaph son of Deuel # 10:20 LXX, Syr read Reuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad’s descendants. 21The Kohathites then set out, transporting the holy objects; # 10:21 Nm 3:27–31; 4:2–4,15,18–20 the tabernacle was to be set up before their arrival.
22Next the military divisions of the camp of Ephraim’s descendants with their banner set out, and Elishama son of Ammihud # 10:22 Nm 1:10; 2:18; 7:48 was over their divisions. 23Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh’s descendants, 24and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin’s descendants.
25The military divisions of the camp of Dan’s descendants with their banner set out, serving as rear guard for all the camps, and Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai # 10:25 Nm 1:12; 2:25; 7:66 was over their divisions. 26Pagiel son of Ochran was over the division of the tribe of Asher’s descendants, 27and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali’s descendants. 28This was the order of march for the Israelites by their military divisions as they set out.
29Moses said to Hobab, descendant of Reuel # 10:29 Ex 2:16–18; 3:1; 4:18; Jdg 4:11 the Midianite and Moses’s relative by marriage, “We’re setting out for the place the Lord promised, ‘I will give it to you.’ # 10:29 Gn 12:7; 13:14–17; 15:7; Ac 7:5 Come with us, and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.” # 10:29 Ex 18:9
30But he replied to him, “I don’t want to go. Instead, I will go to my own land and my relatives.”
31“Please don’t leave us,” Moses said, “since you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can serve as our eyes. 32If you come with us, whatever good the Lord does for us we will do for you.” # 10:32 Jdg 1:16; 4:11
33They set out from the mountain of the Lord on a three-day journey with the ark of the Lord’s covenant traveling ahead of them for those three days to seek a resting place for them. # 10:33 Dt 1:33 34Meanwhile, the cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
35Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say:
Arise, Lord!
Let your enemies be scattered,
and those who hate you flee from your presence. # 10:35 Ps 68:1
36When it came to rest, he would say:
Return, Lord,
to the countless thousands of Israel. # 10:36 Gn 15:5; Dt 1:8,10

The people begin their journey
The silver trumpets
1The LORD told Moses:
2Have two trumpets made out of hammered silver. These will be used to call the people together and to give the signal for moving your camp. 3If both trumpets are blown, everyone is to meet with you at the entrance to the sacred tent. 4But if just one is blown, only the twelve tribal leaders need to come together.
5-6Give a signal on a trumpet when it is time to break camp. The first blast will be the signal for the tribes camped on the east side, and the second blast will be the signal for those on the south. 7But when you want everyone to come together, sound a different signal on the trumpet. 8The priests of Aaron's family will be the ones to blow the trumpets, and this law will never change.
9Whenever you go into battle against an enemy attacking your land, give a warning signal on the trumpets. Then I, the LORD, will hear it and rescue you. 10During the celebration of the New Moon Festival and other religious festivals, sound the trumpets while you offer sacrifices. This will be a reminder that I am the LORD your God.
The Israelites begin their journey
11On the twentieth day of the second month#10.11 second month: See the note at 1.1. of that same year, the cloud over the sacred tent moved on. 12So the Israelites broke camp and left the Sinai Desert. And some time later, the cloud stopped in the Paran Desert.#10.12 the Paran Desert: Probably a general name for the northernmost part of the Sinai Desert. 13This was the first time the LORD had told Moses to command the people of Israel to move on.
14Judah and the tribes that camped beside it marched out first, carrying their banner. Nahshon son of Amminadab was the leader of the Judah tribe, 15Nethanel son of Zuar was the leader of the Issachar tribe, 16and Eliab son of Helon was the leader of the Zebulun tribe.
17The sacred tent had been taken down, and the Gershonites and the Merarites carried it, marching behind the Judah camp.
18Reuben and the tribes that camped beside it marched out second, carrying their banner. Elizur son of Shedeur was the leader of the Reuben tribe, 19Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was the leader of the Simeon tribe, 20and Eliasaph son of Deuel was the leader of the Gad tribe.
21Next were the Kohathites, carrying the objects for the sacred tent, which was to be set up before they arrived at the new camp.
22Ephraim and the tribes that camped beside it marched next, carrying their banner. Elishama son of Ammihud was the leader of the Ephraim tribe, 23Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was the leader of the Manasseh tribe, 24and Abidan son of Gideoni was the leader of the Benjamin tribe.
25Dan and the tribes that camped beside it were to protect the Israelites against an attack from behind, and so they marched last, carrying their banner. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was the leader of the tribe of Dan, 26Pagiel son of Ochran was the leader of the Asher tribe, 27and Ahira son of Enan was the leader of the Naphtali tribe.
28This was the order in which the Israelites marched each time they moved their camp.
29Hobab#10.29 Hobab: Hebrew “Hobab son of Reuel”. the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, was there. And Moses said to him, “We're leaving for the place the LORD has promised us. He has said that all will go well for us. So come along, and we will make sure that all goes well for you.”
30“No, I won't go,” Hobab answered. “I'm returning home to be with my own people.”
31“Please go with us!” Moses said. “You can be our guide because you know the places to camp in the desert. 32Besides that, if you go, we will give you a share of the good things the LORD gives us.”
33The people of Israel began their journey from Mount Sinai.#10.33 Mount Sinai: Hebrew “the LORD's mountain”. They travelled three days, and the Levites who carried the sacred chest led the way, so the LORD could show them where to camp. 34And the cloud always stayed with them.
35Each day as the Israelites began their journey, Moses would pray, “Our LORD, defeat your enemies and make them run!”#Ps 68.1. 36And when they stopped to set up camp, he would pray, “Our LORD, stay close to Israel's thousands and thousands of people.”
