Demons Driven Out by Jesus
1They # 5:1–20 Mt 8:28–34; Lk 8:26–39 came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. # 5:1 Some mss read Gadarenes; other mss read Gergesenes 2As soon as he got out of the boat, a man with an unclean # 5:2 2Co 6:17 spirit # 5:2 Lk 11:24 came out of the tombs # 5:2 Jn 5:28 and met him. 3He lived in the tombs, # 5:3 Lk 23:53 and no one was able to restrain him anymore — not even with a chain # 5:3 Mk 15:1 — 4because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had torn the chains apart and smashed # 5:4 Rm 16:20; Rv 2:27 the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue # 5:4 Jms 3:7–8 him. 5Night # 5:5 Jn 9:4 and day among the tombs # 5:5 Lk 23:53 and on the mountains, # 5:5 Mt 4:8 he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. 7And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son # 5:7 Jn 5:19; Heb 1:2 of the Most High God? # 5:7 Ps 78:35 I beg you before God, don’t torment # 5:7 Rv 20:10 me! ” 8For he had told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean # 5:8 2Co 6:17 spirit! ” # 5:8 Lk 11:24
9 “What is your name? ” he asked him.
“My name is Legion,” # 5:9 Mt 26:53; Lk 8:30 he answered him, “because we are many.” 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
11A large herd of pigs # 5:11 Mt 7:6; 8:30–32; Lk 8:32–33; 15:15–16 was there, feeding # 5:11 Jn 21:15 on the hillside. 12The demons # 5:12 Other mss read All the demons begged him, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13So he gave them permission, and the unclean # 5:13 2Co 6:17 spirits # 5:13 Lk 11:24 came out and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
14The men who tended them ran off # 5:14 Jms 4:7 and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed, # 5:15 Mt 9:32,# 5:15 Mk 5:9 sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; # 5:15 1Pt 4:7 and they were afraid. # 5:15 Ps 147:11; Pr 1:7; Rv 14:7 16Those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed # 5:16 Mt 9:32 man and told about the pigs. 17Then they began to beg him to leave their region.
18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him earnestly that he might remain with him. 19Jesus did not let him but told him, “Go home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord # 5:19 Col 4:1; Jd 5 has done # 5:19 Lk 1:25; 8:39; Ac 15:17; Rm 9:28 for you and how he has had mercy on you.” 20So he went out and began to proclaim # 5:20 Mk 1:4 in the Decapolis # 5:20 Mt 4:25; Mk 7:31 how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed. # 5:20 Rv 17:6
A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed
21When # 5:21–43 Mt 9:18–26; Lk 8:40–56 Jesus had crossed over again by boat # 5:21 Other mss omit by boat to the other side, a large crowd # 5:21 Mk 2:4 gathered around him while he was by the sea. 22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, # 5:22 Lk 8:41 came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet # 5:22 Rv 19:10 23and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on # 5:23 1Tm 5:22 her so that she can get well # 5:23 Or she might be saved,# 5:23 Mk 6:56 and live.” 24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him.
25Now a woman suffering from bleeding # 5:25 Lk 8:43 for twelve years 26had endured # 5:26 Php 1:29 much under many doctors. # 5:26 Col 4:14 She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched # 5:27 Jn 20:17 his clothing. # 5:27 Lk 19:36 28For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.” # 5:28 Mk 6:56; Ac 16:31 29Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed # 5:29 Lk 7:7 of her affliction.
30Immediately Jesus realized that power # 5:30 Lk 5:17; 6:19; 8:46 had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd # 5:30 Mk 2:13 and said, “Who touched my clothes? ” # 5:30 Lk 19:36
31His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me? ’ ”
32But he was looking around to see who had done this. 33The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down # 5:33 Lk 8:47 before him, and told him the whole truth. # 5:33 Jn 14:6 34“Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith # 5:34 Mt 8:10 has saved you. # 5:34 Mt 9:22; Mk 6:56 Go in peace and be healed # 5:34 Ac 4:10 from your affliction.” # 5:34 Mk 5:29
35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher # 5:35 Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 anymore? ”
36When Jesus overheard # 5:36 Or ignored what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. # 5:36 Jn 6:20 Only believe.” 37He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter, # 5:37 Lk 6:14 James, # 5:37 Ac 12:2 and John, # 5:37 Jn 21:7 James’s brother. 38They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion — people weeping and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? # 5:39 Mt 9:23 The child # 5:39 Lk 1:7 is not dead but asleep.” # 5:39 Mt 9:24 40They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father, # 5:40 Col 3:21 mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. 41Then he took the child # 5:41 Lk 1:7 by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” # 5:41 An Aramaic expression (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up” # 5:41 Mk 1:31; 2:11; 4:27,38; 9:27; 14:41–42). 42Immediately the girl got up # 5:42 Mk 9:27 and began to walk. # 5:42 Mt 11:5 (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded. # 5:42 Mk 16:8; Ac 10:45 43Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this # 5:43 Mk 1:44; Lk 8:56 and told them to give her something to eat.

Jesus forced bad spirits out of a man
1Then Jesus and his followers went to the other side of the lake, to the country called Gerasene.
2-5There was a man there that had a bad spirit in him. He was like a crazy man. He camped in the cemetery there.
Before Jesus came to that place, that man walked around in the cemetery, and all over the hills there, and he yelled out and screamed all the time. He did that in the day time and also at night time. And he cut himself with stones. People couldn’t tie him up, not even with chains. They tried to do that lots of times. They tied up his hands and his feet, but it was no good. He was too strong. He just broke those chains every time. Nobody was strong enough to hold him or make him sit down quiet.
When Jesus got out of the boat, 6that crazy man saw him from a long way off. He ran right up to Jesus. The spirit in him knew that Jesus was stronger than him, so he got down on his knees in front of Jesus.
7-8Jesus said to the bad spirit, “Come out of this man.”
But the spirit in him made him yell at Jesus, “Why did you come here? I know you. You are Jesus. You are the son of God. He is the big boss over everything. Promise me truly that you will not hurt me.”
9Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Our name is Big Mob. You see, we are a mob of bad spirits inside this man. 10Please don’t send us away from this country.”
11There were about 2,000 pigs feeding themselves on the hill nearby. 12The bad spirits asked Jesus, “Can we go into that big mob of pigs over there?”
13So Jesus sent those bad spirits out of the man and let them go into the pigs. Then those pigs went crazy, and they ran down the steep hill into the lake, and they drowned themselves in the water.
14The men that looked after the pigs were frightened, and they ran back to their town, and they told everyone what happened. They told that story to the people in the town, and they told it to the people that lived outside of the town too. A lot of people wanted to see what happened, 15so they ran out to that place where Jesus was. They saw that man sitting down quiet and wearing clothes. He wasn’t crazy any more. Then those people got frightened. 16The men that looked after the pigs told them the story about the man and the pigs. 17Then all that mob started to ask Jesus strongly to go away from their country and leave them alone.
18Jesus listened to them, and he started to get into the boat. Then the man that used to have the bad spirits in him, asked Jesus, “Please, can I come with you?”
19Jesus said, “No, I want you to go back to your family, and to your own mob. I want you to tell everybody about the good things God did for you. Tell them that God felt sorry for you, and he was really good to you.”
20Then that man went all over that country called Ten Towns, and he told everybody that story. He told them all about the good things Jesus did for him. Everybody that heard him was really surprised.
Jesus made a woman better
21Jesus and his followers got back into the boat and went to the other side of the lake. A really big mob of people were waiting for them there, beside the water.
22There was a Jewish meeting house near there. One of the bosses of that meeting house saw Jesus and went up to him, and he got down on his knees in front of Jesus, to show him respect. That man’s name was Jairus. 23He strongly asked Jesus to help his daughter. He said, “My little girl is really sick, and I think she will die. Please come and put your hands on her. I know that you can make her better, so that she will not die.”
24Jesus listened to the man and started to go with him. The big mob of people followed them. They went up really close and pushed up against Jesus, all around him.
25While they were walking along, a sick woman was there. A long time before this, she started bleeding, and that bleeding didn’t stop. 26She went to every doctor, but none of them could help her. She spent all her money trying to get better, but it was no good, she only got worse. She kept on bleeding for 12 years. 27-28Then somebody told her about Jesus, and she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his coat, I will get better.” So she came up behind Jesus, and she touched his coat. 29And straight away, her bleeding stopped. She knew she was better.
30Jesus knew straight away that power went out from him, so he stopped walking, turned around, and asked the people, “Who touched my clothes?”
31Jesus’s followers said, “There are big mobs of people here pushing up against you. Why do you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ Lots of people touched you.”
32Jesus kept on looking around to see the person that used his power. 33That woman knew that she was the person that got better, so she was very frightened, and she was shaking. She came to Jesus, and she got down on her knees in front of him, to show him respect, and she told him her story. She told him that she touched him. 34Jesus said to her, “My friend, you really believed in me, so now you are better. You can go home, and you will not have any more trouble. You are not sick any more.”
Jesus made a dead girl alive again
35While Jesus was talking to the woman, a man from Jairus’s house came to him with bad news. He said, “I’m sorry, it’s too late. Your little girl is dead. Don’t bother Jesus now.”
36Jesus heard the man’s words, but he took no notice of them. He said to Jairus, “Don’t be frightened. Just trust me.” 37Then Jesus told the people, “Don’t come with me to this man’s house.” He only let a few people go with him. They were the girl’s mother and father, and 3 of his special workers, Peter, James and John. They were the only people that went with him.
38They got close to the house, and Jesus heard other people inside it making a big noise. They were crying for that dead girl and shouting out loud. 39Jesus went into the house, and he asked them, “Why are you making all this noise? That little girl isn’t dead. She is just sleeping.”
40But they just laughed at Jesus. So he told them all to get out of the house. Then Jesus said to the girl’s mother and father, and to his 3 followers, “You come with me.” Then they went together into the room where the girl lay.
41Jesus held the girl’s hand and talked to her in their language. He said, “Talitha koum.” That means, Get up, little girl. 42Straight away, that girl got up and walked around the room. Her mother and father were really surprised. Their little girl was alive again. She was 12 years old at that time.
43Jesus told them strongly, “Don’t tell anyone that I made this little girl alive again.” Then he said to them, “Now give her some food to eat.”
