The Son of Man Forgives and Heals
1When#Mt 9:1–8; Lk 5:17–26 he entered Capernaum#Lk 10:15 again after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and he was speaking the word#Mk 4:14; Jn 18:32 to them. 3They came to him bringing a paralytic,#Mt 4:24; 8:6; 9:2,6; Mk 2:3–10 carried by four of them. 4Since they were not able to bring him to#2:4 Other mss read able to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and after digging through it, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying. 5Seeing their faith,#Mt 8:10; Ac 3:16; Rm 1:8; 1Co 2:5; Gl 2:16; 1Tm 1:2; Heb 4:2 Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins#Jn 15:22 are forgiven.”#Mt 9:2,5; Lk 5:20,23; 7:48
6But some of the scribes#Mt 2:4 were sitting there, questioning#Mk 9:33 in their hearts: 7“Why does he speak like this? He’s blaspheming!#Ex 22:28; Mk 3:29; Rv 13:6 Who can forgive#Ps 25:11; Mt 9:2 sins#Jn 15:22 but God alone?” #Ex 34:6–7; Is 43:25; 44:2
8Right away#Mk 10:52 Jesus perceived in his spirit#Lk 5:22; 16:15; Jn 2:25 that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier:#Lk 16:17; 18:25 to say to the paralytic,#Mk 2:3 ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat, and walk’?#Mt 11:5 10But so that you may know that the Son of Man#Ps 8:4; Lk 5:24; Ac 7:56 has authority#Mt 28:18; Mk 1:22 on earth to forgive sins”#Jn 15:22 — he told the paralytic — 11“I tell you: get up,#Mk 5:41 take your mat, and go home.”
12Immediately he got up, took the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded#Ac 10:45 and gave glory#Jn 11:4; 17:1; 1Pt 2:12 to God,#Lk 2:14 saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” #Mt 9:33
The Call of Levi
13Jesus#Mt 9:9–13; Lk 5:27–32 went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching#Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 them. 14Then, passing by, he saw Levi#Lk 5:27,29 the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office,#Lk 5:27 and he said to him, “Follow me,”#Lk 5:27 and he got up and followed#Lk 5:11; Jn 8:12 him.
15While he was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors#Lk 3:12; 18:13 and sinners#Mt 9:10; 1Tm 1:15 were eating#2:15 Lit reclining together with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who were following him. 16When the scribes#Mt 2:4 who were Pharisees#2:16 Other mss read scribes and Pharisees#Mk 7:3 saw that he was eating#Mt 11:18 with sinners#1Tm 1:15 and tax collectors,#Lk 3:12 they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat#2:16 Other mss add and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
17When Jesus heard this, he told them, “It is not those who are well who need#Mt 6:8 a doctor,#Col 4:14 but those who are sick.#Lk 5:31 I didn’t come to call the righteous,#Mt 13:17; Rm 1:17 but sinners.”#Lk 5:32
A Question about Fasting
18Now#Mt 9:14–17; Lk 5:33–39 John’s#Mk 1:4 disciples#Jn 3:25 and the Pharisees#2:18 Other mss read The disciples of John and of the Pharisees#Mk 7:3 were fasting.#Lk 18:12; Ac 13:2 People came and asked him, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
19Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the groom#Jn 2:9 is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. 20But the time#2:20 Or the days will come#Mk 13:24 when the groom will be taken away from them,#Lk 17:22; Jn 16:16–20 and then they will fast#Lk 18:12 on that day. 21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new patch pulls away from the old cloth,#Lk 19:36 and a worse tear is made. 22And no one puts new wine#Lk 5:37 into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst#Jn 6:27 the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.”
Lord of the Sabbath
23On#Mt 12:1–8; Lk 6:1–5 the Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples#Mk 10:10 began to make their way, picking some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees#Mk 7:3 said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful#Lk 6:2 on the Sabbath?”
25He said to them, “Have you never read what David#Lk 1:27 and those who were with him did when he was in need#Ac 2:45 and hungry#Rv 7:16 — 26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar#1Sm 21:1–6 the high priest#Lv 16:32 and ate the bread of the Presence#Ex 25:30 — which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests#Ac 4:1 — and also gave some to his companions?” 27Then he told them, “The Sabbath was made for#2:27 Or because of man and not man for the Sabbath.#Col 2:16 28So then, the Son of Man#Mk 2:10 is Lord#Rm 7:25; 1Co 8:6; Col 3:22 even of the Sabbath.”#Lk 6:5

Markos 2
2
1And having entered again into K'far-Nachum after#2:1 many yamim, it was heard that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach is at home.
2And many were gathered together so that there was no longer any room at the delet, and Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was speaking the dvar Hashem to them.
3And they come bringing to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach a paralytic being carried along by arba'a anashim (four men).
4And not being able to bring [the paralytic] to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach on account of the multitude, they removed the roof where Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was, and having made an opening, they lowered the mat upon which the paralytic was lying.
5And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, having seen the emunah of them, says to the paralytic, Beni, your averos are granted selicha.
6And there were some of the Sofrim (Scribes) sitting there and thinking about these things in their levavot (hearts),
7Why is this one speaking thus? He is guilty of Chillul Hashem gidduf (Desecration of the Name, blasphemy). Who is able to grant selicha (forgiveness) to averos (sins) except Hashem?#2:7 Isa 43:25
8And, ofen ort (immediately), having had daas in his ruach that in this way they were thinking, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Why are you considering such things in your levavot?
9Which is easier? To say to the paralytic, Your averos are granted selicha, or to say, Stand and pick up your mat and walk?
10But in order that you may have daas that the Bar Enosh#2:10 Moshiach, Dan 7:13-14 has samchut (authority) on haaretz to grant that averos receive selicha, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to the paralytic,
11To you I say, Stand, pick up your mat, and go to your bais.
12And the man arose, and, ofen ort (immediately), in front of everyone, taking the mat, he went outside. So everyone was astonished and gave kavod to Hashem saying, Never have we seen anything like this!
13And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach went out again beside the lake; and all the multitude was coming to him, and he was teaching them torah.
14And as he was passing by, he saw Levi Ben-Chalfai sitting in the tax office, and Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to him, Follow me. And, getting up, Levi (Mattityahu) followed Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
15And it came to pass that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach reclined at tish in Leviʼs house, and many mochesim (tax collectors) and chote'im (sinners) were reclining at tish with Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and with his talmidim. For there were many, and they were following him.
16And the Sofrim (scribes) of the Perushim, seeing that Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach eats with chote'im (sinners) and mochesim (tax collectors), were saying to his talmidim, With mochesim (tax collectors) and chote'im (sinners) does he eat?
17And having heard this, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Itʼs not the strong ones that have need of a rofeh (physician) but rather the cholim (sick persons). I did not come to call [the] tzaddikim (righteous ones) but the chote'im (sinners) [to teshuva].
18And the talmidim of Yochanan and the Perushim came with tzomot (fasts). And they come and say to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Why [do] the talmidim of the Perushim and the talmidim of Yochanan come with tzomot, but your talmidim do not?
19And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, said to them, Surely the Bnei HaChuppah of the Choson (Bridegroom) are not able to undergo tzomot as long as they have the Choson with them, nu? As long as they have the Choson with them, they are not able to undergo tzomot.
20But yamim (days) will come when the Choson is taken away from them, and then they will undergo tzomot HaYom HaHu.
21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch will pull away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.
22And no one puts yayin chadash (new wine) into old wineskins; otherwise, the yayin will burst the wineskins and the yayin is lost and so are the wineskins. Instead yayin chadash (new wine) [is put] into new wineskins.
23And it came about [that] on Shabbos, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was passing through the grainfields, and his talmidim began to make [their] way picking the heads of grain.#2:23 Dt 23:25
24And the Perushim said to him, Look, why are they engaging in what is not mutar (permissible) in the Torah on Shabbos?
25And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Have you never read in the Tanakh what Dovid HaMelech did when he was in need and he was hungry, he and the ones with him?
26How he entered into the Beis Hashem during the yamim of Evyatar the Kohen Gadol and the Lechem HaPanim he ate, which to be eaten it is not mutar (permissible) except by the Kohanim, and he gave [some] also to the ones with him.#2:26 1Chr 24:6; 2Sm 8:17; Lv 24:5,9; 1Sm 21:1-6
27And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, Shabbos was created for the sake of man and not man for the sake of Shabbos.#2:27 Ex 23:12; Dt 5:14
28Therefore, the Bar Enosh#2:28 Moshiach, Dan 7:13, 14 is even Adon HaShabbos.
