Luke 17

Warnings from Jesus

1He # 17:1–3 Mt 18:6–7; Mk 9:42; 1Co 11:19 said to his disciples, “Offenses will certainly come, # 17:1 Lit “It is impossible for offenses not to come but woe # 17:1 Lk 22:22 to the one through whom they come! # 17:1 Mt 13:41 2It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble. # 17:2 1Co 8:9 3Be # 17:3–4 Mt 18:15,21–22 on your guard. Faith and Duty

6 “If you have faith the size of # 17:6 Lit faith like a mustard seed,” # 17:6 Mt 13:31; Mk 4:31; Lk 13:19 the Lord said, “you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

7 “Which one of you having a servant tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? 8Instead, will he not tell him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, get ready, and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink’? # 17:8 Lk 12:35–37 9Does he thank that servant because he did what was commanded? # 17:9 Other mss add I don’t think so 10In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, ‘We are unworthy # 17:10 Jb 22:2–3; 35:7; Mt 25:30; Rm 11:35 servants; we’ve only done our duty.’ ”

Ten Men Healed

11While traveling to Jerusalem, # 17:11 Lk 9:51 he passed between # 17:11 Or through the middle of Samaria and Galilee. # 17:11 Jn 4:3–4 12As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy # 17:12 Gk lepros; a term for various skin diseases; see Lv 13–14,# 17:12 Lv 13:45–46 met him. They stood at a distance 13and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, # 17:13 Lk 5:5 have mercy on us! ”

14When he saw them, he told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” # 17:14 Lv 13:2–14:32; Mt 8:4; Lk 5:14 And while they were going, they were cleansed.

15But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God. # 17:15 Mt 9:8; Mk 2:12; Lk 2:14; 5:26; Jn 9:24; Ac 4:21; 12:23; Rm 4:20 16He fell facedown # 17:16 1Sm 20:41; 2Sm 14:22; Mt 17:6; 1Co 14:25 at his feet, thanking him. 17Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner? ” 19And he told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.” # 17:19 Or faith has made you well,# 17:19 Mt 9:22; Mk 10:52; Lk 5:20; 18:42

The Coming of the Kingdom

20When he was # 17:20–21 Mt 24:23; Mk 13:21 asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, # 17:20 Lk 19:11; Ac 1:6 he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable; 21no one will say, # 17:21 Lit they will not say ‘See here! ’ or ‘There! ’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.” # 17:21 Or within you

22Then he told the disciples, “The days are coming # 17:22 Dt 32:35; Is 2:12; Jr 7:32; Am 4:2; Lk 5:35; 19:43; 21:6; 23:29 when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won’t see it. # 17:22 Am 5:18 23They will say to you, # 17:23–24 Mt 24:23,27; Mk 13:21 ‘See there! ’ or ‘See here! ’ Don’t follow or run after them. # 17:23 Lk 21:8 24For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in his day. # 17:24 1Co 1:8 25But first it is necessary that he suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. # 17:25 Mt 16:21; Lk 9:22

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah, # 17:26–27 Mt 24:37–38 so it will be in the days of the Son of Man: 27People went on eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage # 17:27 Lk 20:34–35 until the day Noah boarded the ark, # 17:27 Gn 6:14 and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot: # 17:28 Gn 19:1–26 People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building. 29But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed # 17:29 Gn 19:24–25 them all. 30It # 17:30–35 Mt 24:17,39–41; Mk 13:15 will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed. # 17:30 Mt 16:27; 24:44; 1Co 1:7; 2Th 1:7; 1Pt 1:7; 4:13 31On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. 1And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to his talmidim, It is impossible for the nisayon (temptation) to sin not to come, but oy through whom it comes. 2It is better for him if a millstone is hung around his neck and he had been thrown into the sea than that he should cause a michshol for these little ones. 3Pay attention to yourselves. If your ach sins and you rebuke him, and if he makes teshuva, grant him selicha (forgiveness). 4And if shevah pe'amim during the yom he sins against you and shevah pe'amim he turns around to you saying, I make teshuva, you will grant him selicha.

5And the Shlichim said to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Adoneinu, increase our emunah. 6And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu said, If you have emunah like a mustard seed, you would have said to this mulberry etz, be uprooted and be planted in the sea, and it would have given you mishma'at.

7But who among you, having an eved plowing or tending kevesim, when the eved comes in from the sadeh, will say to him, Here, come ofen ort (immediately) and recline at tish. 8Rather, would he not say, Prepare something that I may have okhel; gird up your tunic and serve me until I am satisfied, and, after that, you may have okhel? 9There is no obligatory effusive todah, when the eved only did his chiyuv (duty). 10So also you, when you do all these things which are given you as mitzvot, say, We are useless avadim, we only did our chiyuv.

11And it came about while Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach goes to Yerushalayim, he was traveling through the middle of Shomron and the Galil. 12And entering into a certain shtetl, some anashim metzoraim (leprous men) met Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, and there were ten of them. Keeping their distance,#17:12 Lv 13:45,46 13They shouted, saying, Yehoshua, Rabbi, chaneinu! 14And having seen this, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the kohanim. And it came about while they were going away that they were made metoharim (clean).#17:14 Lv 14:3 15And one of them, having seen that he had received refuah, returned with a kol gadol (loud voice), saying Baruch Hashem! 16And he fell on his face at the feet of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, giving hodayah (thanksgiving). And he was a Shomroni (Samaritan). 17And in reply Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach said, Were there not ten who were made metoharim? Now the tishah (nine), where are they? 18Was none of them found to turn around and return and give kavod (glory) to Hashem except this nokhri (foreigner)? 19And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to him, Get up and go. Your emunah (faith) has delivered you.

20Now having been asked by the Perushim, Ad mosai? (How much longer?) When comes the Malchut Hashem? Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach replied, The Malchut Hashem is not coming with things observable, 21nor will they say, Hinei, here it is, or There it is, for hinei, the Malchut Hashem is within you.

22And he said to the talmidim, Yamim are coming when you will long to see one of the yamim of the Bar Enosh.#17:22 Moshiach, Dan 7:13 And you will not see it. 23They will say to you, Hinei, there it is! Or, hinei, here it is! Do not go out after them nor pursue them. 24For as the lightning flashing out of one part under Shomayim lights up the other part under Shomayim, thus will be the Bar Enosh#17:24 Moshiach, Dan 7:13-14 in his Yom. 25But brishonah it is necessary for him to suffer many things and to be rejected by HaDor HaZeh. 26And just as it was in the yamim of Noach, thus will it be also in the yamim of the Bar Enosh.#17:26 Moshiach, Dan 7:13-14; Gn 6:5-8; 7:6-24 27They were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage, until the Yom when Noach entered into the Tevah (Ark) and HaMabbul (the Flood) came and destroyed everything. 28Likewise, just as it was in the yamim of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building.#17:28 Gn 19:1-28 29But on the Yom when Lot went out from S'dom, from Shomayim it rained down eish and gofrit and destroyed everything. 30So it will be on the Yom when the Bar Enosh#17:30 Moshiach, Dan 7:13-14 has his hisgalus (revelation). 31On that yom let not anyone on the housetop come back down inside for any of his property in the bais, and the one in a sadeh (field) likewise let him not turn back for things left behind. 32Remember eshet Lot (Lotʼs wife).#17:32 Gn 19:26 33Whoever seeks to preserve his nefesh will lose it; but whoever loses it, will preserve it. 34I say to you, in lailah hazeh there will be two in one bed: one will be taken; and the other will be left. 35There will be shtayim (two) grinding at the same place: one will be taken, but the other will be left. 36Shtayim will be in the sadeh (field); one will be taken and the other left. 37And in reply they say to him, Where, Adoneinu? But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, Where the NEVELAH#17:37 Dt 21:23 is, there also the nesharim (vultures, eagles [popularly]) will be gathered together.
