Joel 1
1
1The word of the Lord that came#Hs 1:1; Mc 1:1; Zph 1:1 to Joel son of Pethuel:
A Plague of Locusts
2Hear this,#Hs 4:1; 5:1 you elders;
listen, all you inhabitants of the land.
Has anything like this ever happened in your days#Dt 4:32; Jr 2:10; Mk 2:12
or in the days of your ancestors?
3Tell your children about it,#Ex 10:2; Jos 4:22; Ps 78:4
and let your children tell their children,
and their children the next generation.
4What the devouring locust#Ex 10:4; Jl 2:25; Am 4:9 has left,
the swarming locust has eaten;
what the swarming locust has left,
the young locust#Ps 105:34; Nah 3:15–16 has eaten;
and what the young locust has left,
the destroying locust#Ps 78:46; Is 33:4 has eaten.
5Wake up, you drunkards,#Jl 3:3 and weep;
wail, all you wine drinkers,
because of the sweet wine,
for it has been taken from your mouth.
6For a nation has invaded my land,#Jl 2:2,11,25
powerful and without number;
its teeth are the teeth of a lion,
and it has the fangs of a lioness.#Rv 9:7–8
7It has devastated my grapevine
and splintered my fig tree.
It has stripped off its bark and thrown it away;
its branches have turned white.
8Grieve like a young woman dressed in sackcloth,#Is 22:12; Jr 4:8; 6:26
mourning for the husband of her youth.
9Grain and drink offerings have been cut off#Hs 9:4; Jl 2:14
from the house of the Lord;
the priests, who are ministers of the Lord, mourn.#Hs 10:5; Jl 2:17
10The fields are destroyed;#Is 24:4
the land grieves;
indeed, the grain is destroyed;
the new wine is dried up;#Hs 9:2
and the fresh oil fails.#Dt 28:51; Hs 2:8–13; Hg 1:11
11Be ashamed, you farmers,#Jr 14:4; 51:23; Am 5:16
wail, you vinedressers,#1:11 Or The farmers are dismayed, the vinedressers wail
over the wheat and the barley,
because the harvest of the field has perished.#Is 17:11; Jr 9:12
12The grapevine is dried up,#Hab 3:17
and the fig tree is withered;
the pomegranate,#Hg 2:19 the date palm,#Sg 7:8 and the apple#Sg 2:3 —
all the trees of the orchard — have withered.
Indeed, human joy has dried up.#Is 16:10; 24:11
13Dress in sackcloth and lament,#Jr 4:8; Ezk 7:18 you priests;#Jl 2:17
wail,#Jr 9:10 you ministers of the altar.
Come and spend the night in sackcloth,#1Kg 21:27
you ministers of my God,
because grain and drink offerings
are withheld from the house of your God.
14Announce a sacred fast;#Jl 2:15–16
proclaim a solemn assembly!
Gather the elders#Jl 1:2
and all the residents of the land
at the house of the Lord your God,#2Ch 20:3; Neh 9:1; Jr 36:6,9
and cry out to the Lord.#Jnh 3:8
The Day of the Lord
15Woe because of that day!#Jr 30:7; Am 5:16
For the day of the Lord is near
and will come as devastation from the Almighty.#Is 13:6,9; Ezk 30:2–3; Jl 2:1–2,11,31
16Hasn’t the food been cut off
before our eyes,#Is 3:7
joy and gladness#Is 16:10; Jr 48:33
from the house of our God?
17The seeds lie shriveled in their casings.#1:17 Or clods; Hb obscure#Is 17:10–11
The storehouses are in ruin,
and the granaries are broken down,
because the grain has withered away.
18How the animals groan!#1Kg 18:5; Jr 12:4; 14:5–6; Hs 4:3
The herds of cattle wander in confusion
since they have no pasture.
Even the flocks of sheep and goats suffer punishment.
19I call to you, Lord,#Ps 50:15; Mc 7:7
for fire has consumed
the pastures of the wilderness,#Jr 9:10; Am 7:4
and flames have devoured
all the trees of the orchard.
20Even the wild animals cry out to#1:20 Or animals pant for; Hb obscure you,#Ps 104:21; 147:9
for the river beds are dried up,#1Kg 17:7; 18:5
and fire has consumed
the pastures of the wilderness.

The Devastation of the Land by Locusts
1The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Pethu´el.
2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? 3Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. 4That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten.
5Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. 6#Rev 9.8. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion. 7He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
8Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the Lord's ministers, mourn. 10The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. 11Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished. 12The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
13Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God. 14Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord.

Isa 13.6. Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come. 16Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. 18How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. 19O Lord, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field. 20The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
