The First Sign: Turning Water into Wine
1On the third day a wedding took place in Cana#Jn 2:11; 4:46; 21:2 of Galilee.#Mt 17:22 Jesus’s mother#Mt 1:16 was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding as well. 3When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told him, “They don’t have any wine.”
4 “What has this concern of yours to do with me, # 2:4 Or “What does that have to do with you and me; lit “What to me and to you; Mt 8:29; Mk 1:24; 5:7; Lk 8:28 #
2Sm 16:10; 19:22 woman?” #Jn 19:26 Jesus asked. “My hour has not yet come.”
5“Do whatever he tells you,” his mother told the servants.
6Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification.#Lv 13–14; Heb 1:3 Each contained twenty or thirty gallons.#2:6 Lit two or three measures
7 “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. 8Then he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter.”#2:8 Lit ruler of the table And they did.
9When the headwaiter tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from — though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom 10and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people are drunk, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.”
11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana#Jn 2:1; 21:2 of Galilee.#Mt 17:22 He revealed#2Co 4:11; 1Jn 1:2 his glory,#Mk 10:37; Jn 17:24 and his disciples believed in him.
12After this, he went down to Capernaum,#Lk 10:15 together with his mother, his brothers,#Mt 12:46–50; Mk 3:31–35; 6:3; Lk 8:19–21; Ac 1:14 and his disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.
Cleansing the Temple
13The Jewish Passover#Ex 12:11 was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.#Mt 23:37 14In the temple#Mt 21:12–13; Mk 11:15–17; Lk 19:45–46 he found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and he also found the money changers sitting there. 15After making a whip out of cords,#Ac 27:32 he drove everyone out of the temple with their sheep#Mt 7:15 and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. 16He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s#Mt 5:16; 11:27; Jn 8:42 house#Lk 11:51; Jn 2:17 into a marketplace!” #2:16 Lit a house of business#Jr 7:11; Zch 14:21; Mal 3:1–3
17And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal#Nm 25:13 for your house will consume#Gl 5:15 me.#2:17Ps 69:9#Ps 69:9
18So the Jews replied to him, “What sign will you show us for doing these things?”
19Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple,#2:19 Or sanctuary, also in vv. 20,21#Lk 1:21 and I will raise it up in three days.”#Lk 9:22
20Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build,#2:20 Or was built forty-six years ago and will you raise it up in three days?” #Mk 15:29
21But he was speaking about the temple of his body.#Mt 26:26; 27:52,58; Mk 14:22; 15:43; Lk 12:4; 22:19; 23:52,55; Jn 19:31,38,40; 20:12; 1Co 10:16; 11:23–26; Heb 10:5,10; 1Pt 2:24 22So when he was raised from the dead,#Mt 17:9; Rv 20:12 his disciples remembered that he had said this,#Jn 14:26 and they believed the Scripture#Mt 26:54; 2Pt 1:20 and the statement Jesus had made.
23While he was in Jerusalem#Mt 23:37 during the Passover Festival,#Jn 5:1 many believed in his name#Jn 10:25; 1Jn 3:23 when they saw the signs he was doing. 24Jesus, however, would not entrust himself to them, since he knew them all 25and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.#Jr 17:10

Yochanan 2

1On Yom HaShelishi, there was a Chasunoh (Wedding Feast) in Kanah in the Galil; and the Em (Mother) of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was there.
2He and his talmidim were also invited to the Chasunoh (Wedding Feast).
3And when yayin (wine) was lacking, the Em of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to him, They do not have yayin.
4And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to her, Mah lanu valach, Isha?#2:4 Gn 3:15 My sha'ah (hour, time) has not yet come.#2:4 Mt 26:18,27-28
5The Em of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to the mesharetim, Asher yomar lakhem ta'asu (Do whatever he tells you).#2:5 Gn 41:55
6Now there were shesh (six) stone water jars lying there. These were for the Jewish tohorot, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
7Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Fill with mayim. And they filled them up to the top.
8And he says to them, Draw now and bring to the Rosh HaMesibba (Head of the Reception, Feast). And they brought it.
9And when the Rosh HaMesibba tasted the mayim having become yayin, and when he did not have da'as of where it came from — but the mesharetim had da'as, the ones having drawn the water — the Rosh HaMesibba summoned the Choson (Bridegroom).
10And the Rosh HaMesibba says to him, Everyone sets out the yayin hatov first, and when they have become drunk, he sets out the inferior; you have kept the yayin hatov until now.
11This was the reshit (beginning) of the otot (miraculous signs) Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach accomplished in Kanah of the Galil, and he manifested the kavod (glory) of him, v'ya'aminu bo (and they put their faith in him).#2:11 Ex 14:31
12After this he went down to K'far-Nachum and the Em of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and the achim and his talmidim also, and there they remained not many yamim (days).
13And Pesach was fast approaching, and Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach went up to Yerushalayim.#2:13 Dt 16:1-6
14And he found in the Beis Hamikdash the ones selling oxen and sheep and doves#2:14 Lv 1:14; Dt 14:26 and the coin-dealers sitting.#2:14 Dt 14:25
15And having made a shot (whip) out of ropes Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach drove all of them out of the Beis Hamikdash, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the machalifei hakesafim (money-changers) and overturned their tishen (tables).
16And to the ones selling doves, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said, Take these things from here. Do not make the Bais Avi a bais hasokharim (house of merchants).#2:16 Zech 14:21
17The talmidim of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach remembered that it had been written, KINAT BETECHA AKHALATNI (Zeal for Your bais hath consumed me).#2:17 Ps 69:9
18In reply, those of Yehudah then said to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, What ot (miraculous sign) do you show us for these things you do?
19In reply, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, Bring churban to this heikhal and in shloshah yamim#2:19 Jon 1:17; Hos 6:2 I will raise it.
20Those of Yehudah then said, In forty and six years this Heikhal was built and you in shloshah yamim will raise it?
21But that one was speaking about the heikhal of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiachʼs basar.#2:21 Gn 47:18; Ps 16:9-10; Job 19:25-27; Isa 53:10-11
22Therefore, when he underwent the Techiyas HaMoshiach (Resurrection of the Moshiach), his talmidim remembered that this he was saying and v'ya'aminu#2:22 Ex 14:31 (and they put their faith) in the Kitvei Hakodesh#2:22 Ps 16:9-10 and the dvar which Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said.
23And when Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was in Yerushalayim during Pesach at the Chag (Feast), many from Yehudah had emunah (faith) in ha-Shem of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, seeing his otot (miraculous signs) which he was doing.
24But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was not entrusting himself to them, because he had da'as of kol Bnei Adam.
25And he had no need that anyone should give solemn edut (testimony) about them,#2:25 Isa 11:3 for he knew what was in Bnei Adam.#2:25 Dt 31:21; 1Kgs 8:39
