Lazarus Dies at Bethany
1Now a man was sick — Lazarus from Bethany, # 11:1 Mk 11:1 the village of Mary and her sister Martha. # 11:1 Lk 10:38–42 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair, # 11:2 Lk 7:38; Jn 12:3 and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3So the sisters sent a message to him: “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
4When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, # 11:4 Lk 9:32; Jn 9:3; 10:38; 11:40; 17:24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18 so that the Son of God # 11:4 Jn 5:19; Heb 1:2 may be glorified through it.” 5Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. 7Then after that, he said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea # 11:7 Lk 1:5 again.”
8“Rabbi,” # 11:8 Mt 23:7–8; 26:25,49; Mk 9:5; 11:21; 14:45; Jn 1:38,49; 3:2,26; 4:31; 6:25; 9:2 the disciples told him, “just now the Jews tried to stone you, # 11:8 Jn 10:31 and you’re going there again? ”
9 “Aren’t there twelve hours in a day? ” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. # 11:9 Mt 5:14; Jn 8:12 10But if anyone walks during the night, # 11:10 Jn 9:4 he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”
11He said this, and then he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, # 11:11 Ac 13:36; 1Co 11:30 but I’m on my way to wake him up.”
12Then the disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.”
13Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep. 14So Jesus then told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. 15I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.”
16Then Thomas # 11:16 Mk 3:18 (called “Twin” # 11:16 Gk Didymus) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him.”
The Resurrection and the Life
17When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb # 11:17 Jn 5:28 four days. 18Bethany was near Jerusalem # 11:18 Mt 23:37 (less than two miles # 11:18 Lit fifteen stadia; one stadion = 600 feet away). 19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
23 “Your brother will rise # 11:23 Mk 9:27 again,” Jesus told her.
24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” # 11:24 Jn 2:4; 6:39; 1Pt 1:5; 3:3; 2Pt 3:3; Jd 18
25Jesus said to her, “I am # 11:25 Ex 3:14; Jn 8:24,58 the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, # 11:25 Jn 6:35 even if he dies, will live. # 11:25 Php 1:21 26Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. # 11:26 Jn 6:50; 8:51 Do you believe this? ”
27“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah, # 11:27 Mt 1:17; Eph 5:2 the Son # 11:27 Jn 5:19 of God, who comes into the world.” # 11:27 Jn 18:37
Jesus Shares the Sorrow of Death
28Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
29As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. # 11:29 Mk 1:45 30Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb # 11:31 Jn 5:28 to cry there.
32As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet # 11:32 Rv 19:10 and told him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died! ”
33When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved # 11:33 Or angry, also in v. 38 in his spirit # 11:33 Ps 51:12 and troubled. 34“Where have you put him? ” he asked.
“Lord,” they told him, “come and see.”
35Jesus wept. # 11:35 Lk 19:41
36So the Jews said, “See how he loved # 11:36 Mk 14:44; Jn 5:20 him! ” 37But some of them said, “Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes # 11:37 Jn 9:6–7 also have kept this man from dying? ”
The Seventh Sign: Raising Lazarus from the Dead
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. # 11:38 Mt 27:60; Mk 15:46; Lk 24:2; Jn 20:1 39“Remove the stone,” Jesus said.
Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.”
40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory # 11:40 Jn 17:24 of God? ” # 11:40 Mk 9:23; 1Jn 3:2
41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank # 11:41 Mk 8:6; Rm 1:8 you that you heard me. # 11:41 Jn 9:31 42I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent # 11:42 Mk 9:37; Jn 1:6 me.” 43After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out! ” 44The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him. # 11:45 Jn 2:23; 12:11 46But some of them went to the Pharisees # 11:46 Mk 7:3 and told them what Jesus had done.
47So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin # 11:47 Mk 13:9 and were saying, “What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs? 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans # 11:48 Ac 16:21 will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
49One of them, Caiaphas, # 11:49 Mt 26:3,57; Lk 3:2; Jn 18:13–14,24,28; Ac 4:6 who was high priest # 11:49 Lv 16:32 that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50You’re not considering that it is to your # 11:50 Other mss read to our advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.” # 11:50 Is 53:8; Jn 18:14 51He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die # 11:51 2Co 4:10 for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children # 11:52 Lk 1:7 of God. 53So from that day on they plotted to kill him. # 11:53 Jn 5:18
54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly # 11:54 Jn 7:1 among the Jews but departed from there to the countryside near the wilderness, # 11:54 Mt 3:1; Rv 12:6 to a town called Ephraim, and he stayed there with the disciples.
55Now the Jewish Passover # 11:55 Ex 12:11 was near, and many went up to Jerusalem # 11:55 Mt 23:37 from the country to purify themselves before the Passover. 56They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple, # 11:56 Ac 21:26 “What do you think? He won’t come to the festival, # 11:56 Jn 2:23 will he? ” 57The chief priests # 11:57 Mt 2:4 and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

Yochanan 11
11
1Now there was a certain man, a choleh (sick man), El'azar from Beit-Anyah (Bethany), the shtetl of Miryam and Marta her achot. 2Now this was the same Miryam that anointed Adoneinu with mishcha#11:2 12:3 (ointment) and wiped his feet with her hair. It was she whose ach El'azar was choleh. 3Therefore, the achayot (sisters) sent to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, saying, Adoni, hinei, the one who is your chaver haahuv is choleh. 4And having heard this, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said, This machla (illness, krankeit) is not unto mavet (death), but for the kavod Hashem, that the Ben HaElohim may receive kavod through it.
5Now Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach had ahavah for Marta, and her achot and El'azar. 6When, therefore, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach heard that El'azar was choleh, then he remained in the place where he was yomayim (two days). 7Then after this he says to his talmidim, Let us go into the land of Yehudah again. 8His talmidim say to him, Rebbe, just now those of the land of Yehudah#11:8 Judeans were seeking to stone you, and you go there again? 9In reply, he said, Are there not Sheneym Asar (Twelve) sha'ot (hours) of HaYom? If the derech of anyone is a derech by Yom, he does not stumble, because the Ohr HaOlam Hazeh he sees.#11:9 Jer 13:16; Ps 1:6 10But if the derech of anyone is a derech baLailah, he stumbles because the Ohr is not in him. 11These things he said. Then, after this, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, El'azar our chaver haahuv has fallen asleep, but I am setting out to awaken him. 12Therefore, the talmidim said to him, Adoni, if he has fallen asleep, he will be granted refu'ah (healing). 13But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach had spoken about the mavet of El'azar. However, those ones supposed that he was speaking about only shlof (sleep). 14Then, therefore, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach told them plainly, El'azar died. 15And I have lev same'ach for your sake, that I was not there, that you may have emunah. But let us go to him. 16Therefore, T'oma — his name means Twin — said to his fellow talmidim, Let us go also, that we may die#11:16 al kiddush HaShem with him.
17Having arrived, therefore, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach discovered El'azar had already been in the kever (tomb) arba'ah yamim (four days). 18Now Beit-Anyah (Bethany) was near Yerushalayim, about fifteen stadia away. 19And many of those of Yehudah had come to Marta and Miryam to give them nechamah (consolation, comfort) regarding the ach of the achayot.#11:19 Job 2:11 20Therefore, Marta when she heard that Yehoshua comes, met him; but Miryam was sitting shivah in the bais. 21Therefore, Marta said to Yehoshua, Adoni, if you were here, achi (my brother) would not have passed away. 22But even now I have da'as that whatever you ask Hashem, Hashem will give you. 23Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to her, Achich yakum (Your brother will stand up).#11:23 up from the Mesim 24Marta says to Yehoshua, I have da'as that he will rise in the Techiyas HaMesim on the Yom HaAcharon (Last Day).#11:24 Dan 12:2 25Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to her, Ani Hu the Tekhiyyah and the Chayyim (Life): the one having emunah in me, even if he should die, will live, 26and everyone living and having emunah in me, never dies. Do you have emunah in this? 27She says to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Ken, Adoni. I have emunah that you are the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, the Ben HaElohim, Hu Habah el HaOlam.
28And having said this, she withdrew and summoned Miryam her achot, telling her privately, Rabbeinu and Moreinu is here, and summons you. 29And that isha, when she heard, got up quickly and was coming to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach. 30Now he had not yet come into the shtetl, but was still in the place where Marta met him. 31Therefore, those of Yehudah, the ones sitting shiva with her in the bais and giving her nechamah, when they saw Miryam get up quickly and rush out, followed her, assuming that she is going to the kever (tomb) that she might weep there. 32Therefore, Miryam, when she came where Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was, and when she saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to Rebbe, Adoni, if you were here, achi (my brother) would not have died. 33Therefore, when he saw her weeping and those of Yehudah coming with her and also weeping, he was deeply moved in his neshamah and was troubled in himself, 34And said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Adoni, come and see. 35Yehoshua wept. 36Therefore, those of Yehudah were saying, Hinei! See how much ahavah he had for him. 37But some of them said, Could not this man, who was able to open the eyes of the ivver, have also prevented this man from passing?
38Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, therefore, again being deeply moved within himself, comes to the kever (tomb). Now it was a me'arah (cave) type of kever and a stone was lying against it. 39Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says, Lift the stone. Marta, the achot of the niftar (deceased), says to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Adoni, already he smells, for it is now arba'ah yamim (four days). 40He says to her, Did I not tell you that if you have emunah (faith), you will see the kavod Hashem? 41Therefore, they lifted the stone and he lifted up his eyes and said, Avi, I thank You that You heard me. 42And I knew that You always hear me, but, because of the multitude standing around, I said it, that they may have emunah (faith) that You sent me. 43And having said these things, he cried out with a kol gadol, El'azar, come forth! 44Then the niftar, having been bound feet and hands with the linen clothes of the tachrichin, and with his face covered with a mitznefet (head wrapping), came out. He says to them, Untie him and let him go.
45Therefore, many of those of Yehudah, the ones having come to Miryam and having seen the things which Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach did, put their emunah in him.#11:45 Ex 14:31 46But some of them went away to the Perushim and reported to them everything Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach did. 47Therefore, the Rashei Hakohanim and the Perushim called a meeting of the Sanhedrin and were saying, What are we doing, for this man is performing many otot (miraculous signs)? 48If we leave him thus, kol Bnei Adam will have emunah (faith) in him, and the Romans will come and will take away from us both the Beis Hamikdash and the nation. 49But a certain one of them, Caiapha, being Kohen Gadol that year, said to them, You do not have da'as of anything, 50Nor do you consider that it is a bedievedike (expedient) thing for you that one man should die on behalf of HaAm and not that all the nation should perish.#11:50 Jon 1:12-15; Isa 53:8 51But this he did not utter from himself, but, being Kohen Gadol that year, he uttered a dvar hanevu'ah that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was about to die on behalf of the nation.#11:51 Ex 28:30; Num 27:21; Isa 53:8 52And not on behalf of Am Yisroel only but also the yeladim of Hashem, the ones having been scattered, that he may gather into echad.#11:52 Isa 49:6 53From that Yom on, therefore, they planned that they might put him to death.
54Therefore he no longer was walking openly among those of Yehudah, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a shtetl called Ephrayim, and there Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach remained with the talmidim.#11:54 2Sm 13:23
55Now Pesach was near and many went up to Yerushalayim from the country before the Pesach for the purpose of HITTEHARU (they purified themselves).#11:55 2Chr 30:18 56They were seeking, therefore, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach and were saying to one another while they stood in the Beis Hamikdash, What does it appear to you? Surely he will not come to the Chag (Feast)! 57Now the Rashei Hakohanim and the Perushim had given orders that if anyone had da'as of where he is, he should reveal it so that they might arrest him.
