Hananiah’s False Prophecy
1In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah,#Jr 27:12 in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur from Gibeon#Jos 9:3 said to me in the temple of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people, 2“This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.#Jr 27:12 3Within two years I will restore to this place all the articles of the Lord’s temple#Jr 27:16 that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from here and transported to Babylon. 4And I will restore to this place Jeconiah#28:4 = Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah#2Kg 24:10–17 who went to Babylon’ — this is the Lord’s declaration — ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”
Jeremiah’s Response to Hananiah
5The prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the temple of the Lord. 6The prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen!#1Kg 1:36 May the Lord do that. May the Lord make the words you have prophesied come true and may he restore the articles of the Lord’s temple and all the exiles from Babylon to this place! 7Only listen to this message I am speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, disaster,#28:8 Some Hb mss, Vg read famine and plague against many lands and great kingdoms. 9As for the prophet who prophesies peace — only when the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the Lord has truly sent.”#Dt 18:20–22
Hananiah Breaks Jeremiah’s Yoke
10The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it.#Jr 27:2 11In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” The prophet Jeremiah then went on his way.
The Lord’s Word against Hananiah
12After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13“Go say to Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar. 14For this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations that they might serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,#Dt 28:48 and they will serve him.#Jr 25:11 I have even put the wild animals under him.’”#Jr 27:6
15The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you, but you have led these people to trust in a lie.#Jr 29:31; Ezk 13:22 16Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to send you off the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the Lord.’”#Dt 13:5; Is 59:13; Jr 29:32 17And the prophet Hananiah died that year in the seventh month.

The False Prophet Hananiah
1#Jer 27:1; Jos 9:3In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year and in the fifth month, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, 2“Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3#2Ki 24:13; 2Ch 36:10Within two full years I will bring back into this place all the vessels of the house of the Lord that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4#Jer 22:24; 24:1And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah who went into Babylon, says the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”
5#Jer 28:1Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the Lord, 6#1Ki 1:36; Ps 41:13even the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen. May the Lord do so; may the Lord perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of the Lord and all that was carried away captive, from Babylon into this place. 7#1Ki 22:28Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your ears and in the ears of all the people. 8#1Ki 17:1; Am 1:2The prophets of old who have been before me and before you prophesied both against many countries and against great kingdoms, of war and disaster and pestilence. 9#Dt 18:22; Jer 6:14As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet shall be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”
10#Jer 27:2Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it. 11Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within the space of two full years.” Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
12#Jer 1:2Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying: 13Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus says the Lord: You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made instead of them yokes of iron. 14#Dt 28:48; Jer 27:6–7For thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him. And I have given him the beasts of the field also.
15#La 2:14; Eze 13:22Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah. The Lord has not sent you, and you make this people trust in a lie. 16#Jer 29:32; Ge 7:4Therefore thus says the Lord: I am about to cast you from off the face of the earth. This year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against the Lord.”
17So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.
