The Life-Giving River
1Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple and there was water flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the temple faced east. The water was coming down from under the south side of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. # 47:1 Ps 46:4; Zch 14:8; Rv 22:1 2Next he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate that faced east; there the water was trickling from the south side. 3As the man went out east with a measuring line in his hand, # 47:3 Ezk 40:3 he measured off a third of a mile # 47:3 Lit 1,000 cubits, also in vv. 4,5 and led me through the water. It came up to my ankles. 4Then he measured off a third of a mile and led me through the water. It came up to my knees. He measured off another third of a mile and led me through the water. It came up to my waist. 5Again he measured off a third of a mile, and it was a river that I could not cross on foot. For the water had risen; it was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be crossed on foot.
6He asked me, “Do you see this, son of man? ” Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7When I had returned, I saw a very large number of trees along both sides of the riverbank. # 47:7 Rv 22:2 8He said to me, “This water flows out to the eastern region and goes down to the Arabah. When it enters the sea, the sea of foul water, # 47:8 Or enters the sea, being brought out to the sea; Hb obscure,# 47:8 = the Dead Sea the water of the sea becomes fresh. # 47:8 Ex 15:26; 2Kg 2:21 9Every kind of living creature that swarms will live wherever the river flows, # 47:9 LXX, Vg; MT reads the two rivers flow and there will be a huge number of fish because this water goes there. Since the water will become fresh, there will be life everywhere the river goes. 10Fishermen will stand beside it from En-gedi to En-eglaim. # 47:10 Two springs near the Dead Sea These will become places where nets are spread out to dry. Their fish will consist of many different kinds, like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea. # 47:10 Nm 34:3; Ezk 48:28 11Yet its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be left for salt. 12All kinds of trees providing food will grow along both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. # 47:12 Ps 1:3 Each month they will bear fresh fruit because the water comes from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be used for eating and their leaves for healing.” # 47:12 Rv 22:2
The Borders of the Land
13This is what the Lord God says: “This is # 47:13 Tg, Vg; Syr reads The valley of the border you will use to divide the land # 47:13 Nm 34:2–12 as an inheritance for the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph will receive two shares. # 47:13 Gn 48:15–16 14You will inherit it in equal portions, since I swore # 47:14 Lit lifted my hand to give it to your ancestors. # 47:14 Dt 1:8; Ezk 20:6 So this land will fall to you as an inheritance.
15This is to be the border of the land:
On the north side # 47:15 Nm 34:7–9; Ezk 48:1 it will extend from the Mediterranean Sea by way of Hethlon and Lebo-hamath to Zedad, # 47:15 LXX; MT reads and Lebo to Zedad, Hamath; Ezk 48:1 16Berothah, and Sibraim (which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17So the border will run from the sea to Hazar-enon at the border # 47:17 Nm 34:9 of Damascus, with the territory of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern side.
18On the east side it will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; you will measure from the northern border to the eastern sea. # 47:18 = the Dead Sea This will be the eastern side.
19On the south side it will run from Tamar to the Waters of Meribath-kadesh, # 47:19 = Kadesh-barnea and on to the Brook of Egypt # 47:19 Nm 34:5; 1Kg 8:65; Is 27:12 as far as the Mediterranean Sea. # 47:19 Ezk 48:28 This will be the southern side.
20On the west side the Mediterranean Sea will be the border, from the southern border up to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This will be the western side.
21“You are to divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. # 47:21 Ezk 45:1 22You will allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens residing among you, # 47:22 Ac 11:18; 15:9; Eph 2:12–14; 3:6; Col 3:11 who have fathered children among you. You will treat them # 47:22 Lit They will be to you like native-born Israelites; along with you, they will be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23In whatever tribe the alien resides, you will assign his inheritance there.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

1Afterward he#47:1 the angelic being brought me again unto the Petach HaBeis;#47:1 HaMikdash and, hinei, mayim issued out from under the threshold of the Beis#47:1 HaMikdash eastward; for the forefront of the Beis#47:1 HaMikdash stood toward the east, and the mayim came down from under from the right side of the Beis,#47:1 HaMikdash at the south side of the Mizbe'ach. 2Then he#47:2 the angelic being brought me out of derech Sha'ar Tzafonah, and led me about the derech outside unto the outer Sha'ar by the derech that looketh eastward; and, hinei, there flowed out mayim on the right side.
3And when the ish that had the measuring line in his yad went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the mayim; the mayim were to the ankles. 4Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the mayim; the mayim were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the mayim were to the loins. 5Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a nachal (stream) that I could not cross over; for the mayim were risen, mayim to swim in, a nachal that could not be crossed over. 6And he#47:6 the angelic being said unto me, Ben Adam, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the bank of the nachal.
7Now when I had returned, hinei, at the bank of the nachal were etz rav me'od (very many trees) on the one side and on the other. 8Then said he#47:8 the angelic being unto me, These mayim issue out toward the east country, and go down into the Aravah, and go into the#47:8 Dead Sea; which being brought forth into the Sea, the mayim shall be healed. 9And it shall come to pass, that every nefesh chayyah, which moveth, whithersoever the nachalim shall come, shall live; and there shall be a very great multitude of dag (fish), because these mayim shall come there; for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the nachal cometh. 10And it shall come to pass, that the fishermen shall stand upon it from Ein-Gedi even unto Ein Eglayim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their dag (fish) shall be according to their kinds, as the dag (fish) of the Yam HaGadol,#47:10 Mediterranean Sea exceeding many. 11But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to melach. 12And by the nachal upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow kol etz ma'achal, whose aleh (leaf) shall not fade, neither shall the p'ri thereof fail; it shall yield fresh fruit every month, because the mayim for them flowed out of the Mikdash; and the p'ri thereof shall be for food, and the aleh (leaf) thereof for terufah (healing).
13Thus saith Adonoi Hashem: This shall be the boundary, whereby ye shall inherit HaAretz according to the Shnei Asar Shivtei Yisroel: Yosef shall have two portions. 14And ye shall inherit it, one as well as another; concerning the which I lifted up Mine Yad to give it unto your Avot; and HaAretz HaZot shall fall unto you for nachalah.
15And this shall be the boundary of HaAretz toward the north side, from the Yam HaGadol, the derech Chetlon, as men go to Tzedad; 16Chamat, Berotah, Sivrayim, which is between the boundary of Damascus and the boundary of Chamat; Chamat Chatzer Hattikhon, which is by the boundary of Chavran. 17And the boundary from the Yam shall be Khatzar Einon, the boundary of Damascus, and the north northward, and the boundary of Chamat. And this is the north
18And the east side ye shall measure from Chavran, and from Damascus, and from Gil'ad, and from Eretz Yisroel by Yarden, from the boundary unto the eastern sea.#47:18 Dead Sea And this is the east side.
19And the south side southward, from Tamar even to the waters of Merivot in Kadesh, the nachalah to the Yam HaGadol. And this is the south side southward.
20The west side also shall be the Yam HaGadol from the boundary, until opposite the approach to Chamat. This is the west side.
21So shall ye divide HaAretz Hazot unto you according to the Shivtei Yisroel. 22And it shall come to pass, that ye shall divide it by lot for a nachalah unto you, and to the gerim that sojourn among you, which shall father banim among you; and they shall be unto you as native-born among the Bnei Yisroel; they shall have nachalah with you among the Shivtei Yisroel. 23And it shall come to pass, that in what shevet (tribe) the ger sojourneth, there shall ye give him his nachalah, saith Adonoi Hashem. Now these are the shmot of the Shevatim (Tribes).
