The Priests’ Chambers
1Then the man led me out by way of the north gate into the outer court. # 42:1 Ezk 40:17,28,48; 41:1 He brought me to the group of chambers opposite the temple yard and opposite the building # 42:1 Ezk 41:12; 42:10,13 to the north. 2Along the length of the chambers, which was 175 feet, # 42:2 Lit 100 cubits, also in vv. 4,8,# 42:2 Ezk 41:13 there was an entrance on the north; the width was 87 1/2 feet. # 42:2 Lit 50 cubits, also in v. 7 3Opposite the 35 foot space # 42:3 Lit 20 cubits belonging to the inner court and opposite the paved surface # 42:3 Ezk 40:17 belonging to the outer court, the structure rose gallery by gallery # 42:3 Ezk 41:15–16 in three tiers. 4In front of the chambers was a walkway toward the inside, # 42:4 Ezk 46:19 17 1/2 feet # 42:4 Lit 10 cubits wide and 175 feet long, # 42:4 LXX, Syr; MT reads wide, a way of one cubit and their entrances were on the north. 5The upper chambers were narrower because the galleries took away more space from them than from the lower and middle stories of the building. 6For they were arranged in three stories and had no pillars like the pillars of the courts; # 42:6 Ezk 41:6 therefore the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and middle stories. 7A wall on the outside ran in front of the chambers, parallel to them, toward the outer court; it was 87 1/2 feet long. 8For the chambers on the outer court were 87 1/2 feet long, while those facing the great hall were 175 feet long. # 42:8 Ezk 41:13–14 9At the base of these chambers there was an entryway on the east side as one enters them from the outer court. # 42:9 Ezk 44:5; 46:19
10In the thickness of the wall of the court toward the south, # 42:10 LXX; MT reads east there were chambers facing the temple yard # 42:10 Ezk 42:1 and the western building, 11with a passageway in front of them, just like the chambers that faced north. # 42:11 Ezk 42:4 Their length and width, as well as all their exits, measurements, and entrances, were identical. 12The entrance at the beginning of the passageway, the way in front of the corresponding # 42:12 Or protective; Hb obscure wall as one enters on the east side, was similar to the entrances of the chambers that were on the south side.
13Then the man said to me, “The northern and southern chambers that face the courtyard are the holy chambers where the priests who approach the Lord will eat # 42:13 Lv 10:3; Dt 21:5; Ezk 40:46 the most holy offerings. # 42:13 Ex 29:31; Lv 7:6; 10:13–14,17 There they will deposit the most holy offerings — the grain offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings — for the place is holy. # 42:13 Lv 6:25,29; 14:13; Nm 18:9–10 14Once the priests have entered, they are not to go out from the holy area to the outer court until they have removed the clothes they minister in, for these are holy. # 42:14 Ex 29:4–9; Lv 8:7,13; Is 61:10; Zch 3:4–5 They are to put on other clothes before they approach the public area.” # 42:14 Ezk 44:19
Outside Dimensions of the Temple Complex
15When he finished measuring inside the temple complex, he led me out by way of the gate that faced east and measured all around the complex. # 42:15 Ezk 40:6; 43:1
16He measured the east side with a measuring rod;
it was 875 feet # 42:16 Lit 500 in rods, also in vv. 17,18,19 by the measuring rod. # 42:16 Lit rod all around, also in vv. 17,18,19
17He # 42:17 LXX reads Then he turned to the north and measured the north side;
it was 875 feet by the measuring rod.
18He # 42:18 LXX reads Then he turned to the south and measured the south side;
it was 875 feet by the measuring rod.
19Then he turned to the west side
and measured 875 feet by the measuring rod.
20He measured the temple complex on all four sides. It had a wall all around it, # 42:20 Is 60:18; Ezk 40:5; Zch 2:5 875 feet long and 875 feet # 42:20 Ezk 45:2; Rv 21:16 wide, to separate the holy from the common. # 42:20 Ezk 22:26; 44:23; 48:15

Yechezkel 42
42
1Then he#42:1 the angelic being brought me forth into the khatzer hakhatzonah, the way toward the north; and he brought me into the lishka that was opposite the Gizrah, and which was opposite the Binyan toward the north. 2Before the length of a hundred cubits was the Petach HaTzafon, and the width was fifty cubits. 3Opposite the twenty cubits of the khatzer hapenimah, and opposite the ritzpah which was for the khatzer hakhitzonah, was atik (balcony) against atik in three stories. 4And before the leshakhot was a mahalach (walkway) ten cubits in width leading inward, a way of one cubit; and their doors toward the north. 5Now the upper leshakhot were narrow; for the atikim took space from these, from the lower, and from the middlemost of the Binyan. 6For they were in three stories, but had not ammudim like the ammudim of the khatzerot; therefore they were set back from the ground more than the lowest and the middlemost. 7And the wall that was outside over against the leshakhot, toward the khatzer hakhitzonah on the forepart of the leshakhot, the length thereof was fifty cubits. 8For the length of the leshakhot that were in the khatzer hakhitzonah was fifty cubits; and, hineh, before the Heikhal were a hundred cubits. 9And from below these leshakhot was the entrance on the east side, as one goeth into them from the khatzer hakhitzonah.
10In the thickness of the wall of the khatzer toward the east, facing the Gizrah, and over against the Binyan, were leshakhot (side rooms). 11And the derech before them was like the appearance of the leshakhot which were toward the north, as long as they, and as wide as they; and all their exits were both according to their arrangements, and according to their doorways. 12And according to the doorways of the leshakhot that were toward the south was a petach in the rosh of the derech, even the derech directly before the wall toward the east, as one entereth into them.
13Then said he#42:13 the angelic being unto me, The leshakhot hatzafon and the leshakhot hadarom, which are before the Gizrah, they are leshakhot hakodesh, where the Kohanim that approach unto Hashem shall eat the kadshei hakadashim; there shall they put the kadshei hakadashim, and the minchah, and the chattat, and the asham (trespass offering); for the place is kadosh. 14When the Kohanim enter therein, then shall they not go out of the Kodesh into the khatzer hakhitzonah, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are kodesh; and shall put on begadim acherim (other garments); then shall they approach the precinct of the people.
15Now when he#42:15 the angelic being had made an end of measuring the Beis HaPenimi, he brought me forth toward the sha'ar whose view is toward the east, and measured it all around. 16He measured the eastern side with the measuring rod, five hundred rods, with the keneh hamiddah (measuring rod) all around. 17He measured the northern side, five hundred rods, with the keneh hamiddah all around. 18He measured the southern side, five hundred rods, with the keneh hamiddah. 19He turned about to the western side, and measured five hundred rods with the keneh hamiddah. 20He measured it by the four sides; it had a wall all around, five hundred rods long, and five hundred wide, lehavdil (to make a separation) between the Kodesh (Holy Precinct, area) and the Chol (Common Precinct, area).
