Remember the Lord
1“Carefully follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase, and may enter and take possession of the land # 8:1 Dt 3:12 the Lord swore to your ancestors. 2Remember that the Lord your God led you on the entire journey these forty years in the wilderness, so that he might humble you and test you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. # 8:3 Mt 4:4; Lk 4:4 4Your clothing did not wear out, and your feet did not swell these forty years. # 8:4 Dt 29:5; Neh 9:21 5Keep in mind that the Lord your God has been disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. 6So keep the commands of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, # 8:7 Ex 3:8; Nm 14:7; Dt 1:25,35; 3:25; 4:21–22; 6:18; 8:10; 9:6; 11:17; Jos 23:16 a land with streams, springs, and deep water sources, flowing in both valleys and hills; 8a land of wheat, barley, vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; 9a land where you will eat food without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you will mine copper. 10When you eat and are full, # 8:10 Dt 11:15 you will bless the Lord your God for the good land # 8:10 Dt 8:7 he has given you.
11“Be careful that you don’t forget the Lord your God by failing to keep his commands, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today. 12When you eat and are full, and build beautiful houses to live in, 13and your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold multiply, and everything else you have increases, 14be careful that your heart doesn’t become proud and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. # 8:14 Lv 26:13; Dt 5:6; 6:12; 13:5,10; Jos 24:17; Jr 34:13 15He led you through the great and terrible wilderness with its poisonous # 8:15 Lit burning snakes and scorpions, a thirsty land where there was no water. He brought water out of the flint rock for you. 16He fed you in the wilderness with manna, # 8:16 Ex 16:4 which your ancestors had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end he might cause you to prosper. 17You may say to yourself, ‘My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,’ 18but remember that the Lord your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm his covenant he swore to your ancestors, # 8:18 Dt 4:31 as it is today. 19If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods to serve them and bow in worship to them, I testify against you today that you will certainly perish. # 8:19 Dt 4:26 20Like the nations the Lord is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the Lord your God.

The LORD takes care of you
Moses said:
1Israel, do you want to go into the land the LORD promised your ancestors? Do you want to capture it, live there, and become a powerful nation? Then be sure to obey every command I am giving you.
2Don't forget how the LORD your God has led you through the desert for the past forty years. He wanted to find out if you were truly willing to obey him and depend on him, 3so he made you go hungry. Then he gave you manna,#8.3 manna: See Exodus 16.1-36. a kind of food that you and your ancestors had never even heard about. The LORD was teaching you that people need more than food to live—they need every word that the LORD has spoken.#Mt 4.4; Lk 4.4.
4Over the past forty years, your clothing hasn't worn out, and your feet haven't swollen. 5So keep in mind that the LORD has been correcting you, just as parents correct their children. 6Obey the commands the LORD your God has given you and worship him with fear and trembling.
7The LORD your God is bringing you into a good land with streams that flow from springs in the valleys and hills. 8-9You can dig for copper in those hills, and the stones are made of iron ore. And you won't go hungry. Wheat and barley fields are everywhere, and so are vineyards and orchards full of fig, pomegranate,#8.8,9 pomegranate: A bright red fruit that looks like an apple. and olive trees, and there is plenty of honey.
Don't forget the LORD
Moses said to Israel:
10After you eat and are full, give praise to the LORD your God for the good land he gave you. 11Make sure that you never forget the LORD or disobey his laws and teachings that I am giving you today. If you always obey them,#Ho 13.5,6. 12you will have plenty to eat, and you will build good houses to live in. 13You will get more and more cattle, sheep, silver, gold, and other possessions.
14But when all this happens, don't be proud! Don't forget that you were once slaves in Egypt and that it was the LORD who set you free. 15Remember how he led you in that huge and frightening desert where poisonous snakes and scorpions live. There was no water, but the LORD split open a rock, and water poured out so you could drink. 16He also gave you manna,#8.16 manna: See the note at 8.3. a kind of food your ancestors had never even heard about. The LORD was testing you to make you trust him, so that later on he could be good to you.
17When you become successful, don't say, “I'm rich, and I've earned it all myself.” 18Instead, remember that the LORD your God gives you the strength to make a living. That's how he keeps the promise he made to your ancestors.
19-20But I'm warning you—if you forget the LORD your God and worship other gods, the LORD will destroy you, just as he destroyed the nations you fought.
