The Ten Commandments
1Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully. 2The Lord our God made a covenant # 5:2 Dt 31:16 with us at Horeb. 3He did not make this covenant with our ancestors, # 5:3 Dt 4:31 but with all of us who are alive here today. 4The Lord spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain. 5At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to report the word # 5:5 One Hb ms, DSS, Sam, LXX, Syr, Vg read words of the Lord to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said:
6I am the Lord your God, # 5:6–21 Ex 20:2–17; Dt 8:14 who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. # 5:6 Lv 26:13; Dt 6:12; 8:14; 13:5,10; Jos 24:17; Jr 34:13
7Do not have other gods besides me.
8Do not make an idol for yourself in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. 9Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, # 5:9 Ex 34:7; Nm 14:18; Dt 7:10; Ezk 18 10but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.
11Do not misuse the name # 5:11 Ex 3:13; 6:3; 33:19 of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.
12Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13You are to labor six days and do all your work, 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Do not do any work — you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the resident alien who lives within your city gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.
15Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
16Honor your father and your mother, # 5:16–20 Mt 19:18–19; Mk 10:19; Lk 18:20; Rm 13:9 as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the Lord your God is giving you. # 5:16 Mt 15:4; Mk 7:10; Eph 6:2–3
17Do not murder. # 5:17 Mt 5:21; Jms 2:11
18Do not commit adultery. # 5:18 Mt 5:27
19Do not steal.
20Do not give dishonest testimony against your neighbor. # 5:20 Pr 25:18
21Do not covet your neighbor’s wife or desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. # 5:16–21 Mt 19:18–19; Mk 10:19; Lk 18:20; Rm 13:9
The People’s Response
22“The Lord spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and total darkness on the mountain; he added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me. 23All of you approached me with your tribal leaders and elders when you heard the voice from the darkness and while the mountain was blazing with fire. 24You said, ‘Look, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that God speaks with a person, yet he still lives. 25But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer. 26For who out of all humanity has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived? 27Go near and listen to everything the Lord our God says. Then you can tell us everything the Lord our God tells you; we will listen and obey.’ # 5:22–27 Ex 20:18–21
28“The Lord heard your # 5:28 Lit the sound of your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right. 29If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper forever. 30Go and tell them: Return to your tents. 31But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command — the statutes and ordinances — you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.’
32“Be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left. 33Follow the whole instruction the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, prosper, and have a long life in the land you will possess.

8Do not make idols that look like anything in the sky or on earth or in the ocean under the earth.#Lv 26.1; Dt 4.15-18; 27.15. 9Don't bow down and worship idols. And don't make your slaves do any work. 15This special day of rest will remind you that I reached out my mighty arm and rescued you from slavery in Egypt.

22When we were gathered on the mountain, the LORD spoke to us in a loud voice from the dark fiery cloud. The LORD gave us these commands, and only these. Then he wrote them on two flat stones and gave them to me.#He 12.18,19.
The people were afraid
(Exodus 20.18-21)
Moses said to Israel:
23When fire blazed from the mountain, and you heard the voice coming from the darkness, your tribal leaders came to me 24and said:
Today the LORD our God has shown us how powerful and glorious he is. He spoke to us from the fire, and we learnt that people can live, even though God speaks to them. 25But we don't want to take a chance on being killed by that terrible fire, and if we keep on hearing the LORD's voice, we will die. 26Has anyone else ever heard the only true God speaking from fire, as we have? And even if they have, would they live to tell about it? 27Moses, go up close and listen to the LORD. Then come back and tell us, and we will do everything he says.
28The LORD heard you and said:
Moses, I heard what the people said to you, and I approve. 29I wish they would always worship me with fear and trembling and be this willing to obey me! Then they and their children would always enjoy a successful life.
30Now, tell them to return to their tents, 31but you come back here to me. After I tell you my laws and teachings, you will repeat them to the people, so they can obey these laws in the land I am giving them.
Moses said:
32Israel, you must carefully obey the LORD's commands. 33Follow them, because they make a path that will lead to a long successful life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
