Defeat of Og of Bashan
1“Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and King Og of Bashan#Nm 21:33; 32:33; Dt 1:4; 4:43,47; 29:7; 32:14; 33:22; Jos 9:10; 12:4–5; 13:11–12,30–31; 17:1; 20:8; 1Kg 4:19; Neh 9:22; Ps 22:12; 68:15; 135:11; 136:20; Is 2:13; Ezk 27:6 came out against us with his whole army to do battle at Edrei.#Nm 21:33,35; Dt 1:4; 3:10; 29:6–7; Jos 12:4; 13:12,31 2But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you along with his whole army and his land. Do to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites,#Nm 21:23–26,34; Dt 2:33; Jdg 11:21 who lived in Heshbon.’ 3So the Lord our God also handed over King Og of Bashan and his whole army to us. We struck him until there was no survivor left.#Dt 2:34 4We captured all his cities at that time. There wasn’t a city that we didn’t take from them: sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5All these were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a large number of rural villages. 6We completely destroyed them, as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon, destroying the men, women, and children of every city. 7But we took all the livestock and the spoil from the cities as plunder for ourselves.#Nm 21:32–35
The Land of the Transjordan Tribes
8“At that time we took the land from the two Amorite kings across the Jordan,#Gn 50:10–11; Dt 1:1,5; Jos 1:14–15 from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon, 9which the Sidonians call Sirion, but the Amorites call Senir, 10all the cities of the plateau, Gilead, and Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of Og’s kingdom in Bashan.#Jos 13:11 11(Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim.#Gn 14:5; 15:20; Dt 2:11,20–21 His bed#3:11 Or sarcophagus was made of iron. Isn’t it in Rabbah of the Ammonites?#Jos 13:25; 15:60; 2Sm 11:1; 12:29; Jr 49:2 It is 13½ feet long and 6 feet wide by a standard measure.#3:11 Lit nine cubits its length and four cubits its width, by a man’s cubit)#1Sm 17:4
12“At that time we took possession of this land.#Gn 28:4; Lv 20:24; Dt 4:5; 6:1; 7:1; 8:1; 12:29; 30:5 I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the area extending from Aroer by the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead along with its cities. 13I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og. The entire region of Argob, the whole territory of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim. 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took over the entire region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He called Bashan by his own name, Jair’s Villages,#3:14 Or Havvoth-jair as it is today. 15I gave Gilead to Machir, 16and I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the area extending from Gilead to the Arnon Valley (the middle of the valley was the border) and up to the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites. 17The Arabah and Jordan are also borders from Chinnereth#3:17 = the Sea of Galilee; Jos 12:3; 13:27; Lk 5:1 as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah on the east.#Nm 32:1–19,33–42; Jos 12:2–3
18“I commanded you at that time: The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. All your valiant men will cross over in battle formation ahead of your brothers the Israelites. 19But your wives, dependents, and livestock — I know that you have a lot of livestock — will remain in the cities I have given you#Dt 1:39; 2:35; 3:7 20until the Lord gives rest#Gn 2:15; Ex 20:11; 23:12; 33:14; Nm 10:33,36; Dt 12:9–10; 25:19; 28:65; Jos 1:13,15; 21:44; 22:4; 23:1; Ru 1:9; 3:1; 2Sm 7:1,11; 1Kg 5:4; 8:56; 1Ch 6:31; 22:9; 28:2; 2Ch 6:41; Ps 23:2; 95:11; 116:7; 132:8,14; Is 11:10; 14:3,7; 28:12; 32:18; 63:14; 66:1; Heb 3:11–4:11 to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.#Nm 32:20–32; Jos 1:14–15
The Transfer of Israel’s Leadership
21“I commanded Joshua at that time: Your own eyes have seen everything the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter. 22Don’t be afraid of them, for the Lord your God fights for you.
23“At that time I begged the Lord: 24Lord God, you have begun to show your greatness and your strong hand to your servant, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like yours? 25Please let me cross over and see the beautiful land#Dt 8:7 on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.
26“But the Lord was angry with me because of you#3:26 Or me for your sake and would not listen to me. The Lord said to me, ‘That’s enough! Do not speak to me again about this matter. 27Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west, north, south, and east, and see it with your own eyes, for you will not cross the Jordan.#Nm 20:1–13 28But commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit this land that you will see.’#Nm 27:12–23 29So we stayed in the valley facing Beth-peor.

Deuteronomy 3
3
1‘And we turn, and go up the way to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle, [to] Edrei.
2‘And Jehovah saith unto me, Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite who is dwelling in Heshbon.
3‘And Jehovah our God giveth into our hands also Og king of Bashan, and all his people, and we smite him till there hath not been left to him a remnant;
4and we capture all his cities at that time, there hath not been a city which we have not taken from them, sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5All these [are] cities fenced with high walls, two-leaved doors and bar, apart from cities of villages very many;
6and we devote them, as we have done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city, men, the women, and the infants;
7and all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we have spoiled for ourselves.
8‘And we take, at that time, the land out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorite, which is beyond the Jordan, from the brook Arnon unto mount Hermon;
9(Sidonians call Hermon, Sirion; and the Amorites call it Senir,)
10all the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan,
11for only Og king of Bashan had been left of the remnant of the Rephaim; lo, his bedstead [is] a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the sons of Ammon? nine cubits its length, and four cubits its breadth, by the cubit of a man.
12‘And this land we have possessed, at that time; from Aroer, which [is] by the brook Arnon, and the half of mount Gilead, and its cities, I have given to the Reubenite, and to the Gadite;
13and the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I have given to the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, to all that Bashan, called the land of Rephaim.
14‘Jair son of Manasseh hath taken all the region of Argob, unto the border of Geshuri, and Maachathi, and calleth them by his own name, Bashan-Havoth-Jair, unto this day.
15And to Machir I have given Gilead.
16‘And to the Reubenite and to the Gadite I have given from Gilead even unto the brook Arnon, the middle of the valley and the border, even unto Jabbok the brook, the border of the sons of Ammon,
17and the plain, and the Jordan, and the border, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, the salt sea, under the springs of Pisgah, at the [sun]-rising.
18‘And I command you, at that time, saying, Jehovah your God hath given to you this land to possess it; armed ye pass over before your brethren the sons of Israel, all the sons of might.
19Only, your wives, and your infants, and your cattle — I have known that ye have much cattle — do dwell in your cities which I have given to you,
20till that Jehovah give rest to your brethren like yourselves, and they also have possessed the land which Jehovah your God is giving to them beyond the Jordan, then ye have turned back each to his possession, which I have given to you.
21‘And Jehoshua I have commanded at that time, saying, Thine eyes are seeing all that which Jehovah your God hath done to these two kings — so doth Jehovah to all the kingdoms whither thou are passing over;
22fear them not, for Jehovah your God, He is fighting for you.
23‘And I entreat for grace unto Jehovah, at that time, saying,
24Lord Jehovah, Thou — Thou hast begun to shew Thy servant Thy greatness, and Thy strong hand; for who [is] a God in the heavens or in earth who doth according to Thy works, and according to Thy might?
25Let me pass over, I pray Thee, and see the good land which [is] beyond the Jordan, this good hill-country, and Lebanon.
26‘And Jehovah sheweth himself wroth with me, for your sake, and hath not hearkened unto me, and Jehovah saith unto me, Enough for thee; add not to speak unto Me any more about this thing:
27go up [to] the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and see with thine eyes — for thou dost not pass over this Jordan;
28and charge Jehoshua, and strengthen him, and harden him, for he doth pass over before this people, and he doth cause them to inherit the land which thou seest.
29‘And we dwell in a valley over-against Beth-Peor.
