Daniel’s Prayer

1In the first year of Darius, # 9:1 Dn 5:31; 6:1; 11:1 the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was made king over the Chaldean kingdom — 2in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy. # 9:2 2Ch 36:21; Ezr 1:1; Jr 25:11–12; 29:10; Zch 7:5 3So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. # 9:3 Neh 1:4; Jb 2:8; Is 61:3; Lk 10:13

4I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:

Ah, Lord — the great and awe-inspiring God # 9:4 Dt 7:21; Neh 9:32 who keeps his gracious covenant # 9:4 Dt 7:9 with those who love him # 9:4 1Jn 4:20 and keep his commands # 9:4 Dt 7:9; Neh 1:5 — 5we have sinned, # 9:5 1Kg 8:48; Neh 9:33; Ps 106:6; Is 64:5–7; Jr 14:7 done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled, # 9:5 Lm 1:18,20 and turned away from your commands and ordinances. # 9:5 Ps 119:176; Is 53:6; Dn 9:11 6We have not listened to your servants the prophets, # 9:6 2Ch 36:16; Jr 44:4–5 who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the people of the land.

7Lord, righteousness belongs to you, # 9:7 Jr 23:6; 33:16; Dn 9:18 but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel — those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown toward you. 8Lord, public shame # 9:8 Ps 37:1–2 belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors, because we have sinned against you. # 9:8 Ps 78:56–64 9Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him 10and have not obeyed the Lord our God by following his instructions that he set before us through his servants # 9:10 2Kg 17:13–15; 18:12 the prophets.

11All Israel has broken your law and turned away, # 9:11 Is 1:3–4; Jr 8:5–10 refusing to obey you. The promised curse # 9:11 Lit The curse and the oath written in the law of Moses, # 9:11 Dt 28:15–68; 29:16–30:20; Lk 2:22 the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against him. 12He has carried out his words # 9:12 Is 44:26; Jr 44:2–6; Lm 2:17; Zch 1:6 that he spoke against us and against our rulers # 9:12 Lit against rulers who ruled us,# 9:12 Jb 12:17; Ps 82:2–7; 148:11 by bringing on us a disaster that is so great that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done # 9:12 Lm 1:12; 2:13; Ezk 5:9 under all of heaven. 13Just as it is written in the law of Moses, # 9:13 Lv 26:14–45; Dt 28:15–68; Dn 9:11 all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of # 9:13 Jb 36:13; Is 9:13; Jr 2:30; 5:3; Mal 1:9 the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth. # 9:13 Jr 31:18 14So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all he has done. But we have not obeyed him.

15Now, Lord our God — who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand # 9:15 Dt 5:15 and made your name renowned # 9:15 Neh 9:10; Jr 32:20 as it is this day — we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath # 9:16 Jr 32:31–32 turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; # 9:16 Ps 87:1–3; Dn 9:20; Jl 3:17; Zch 8:3 for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.

17Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of your servant. Make your face shine # 9:17 Nm 6:25; Ps 31:17; 67:2 on your desolate sanctuary # 9:17 Lm 5:18 for the Lord’s sake. 18Listen closely, # 9:18 Lit Stretch out your ear my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city that bears your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. 19Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay, # 9:19 Ps 44:23; 74:10–11 because your city and your people bear your name.

The Seventy Weeks of Years

20While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, # 9:20 Ps 145:18; Is 58:9; Dn 9:3; 10:12 and presenting my petition before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God — 21while I was praying, Gabriel, # 9:21 Dn 8:16; Lk 1:19,26 the man I had seen in the first vision, # 9:21 Dn 8:1,15 reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering. # 9:21 Ex 29:39; 1Kg 18:36; Ezr 9:4 22He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding. # 9:22 Dn 8:16; 10:21; Zch 1:9 23At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God. # 9:23 by God added for clarity,# 9:23 Dn 10:11,19 So consider the message and understand the vision: # 9:23 Mt 24:15

24Seventy weeks are decreed # 9:24 Lv 25:8; Nm 14:34; Ezk 4:5–6

about your people and your holy city —

to bring the rebellion to an end,

to put a stop to sin,

to atone for iniquity,

to bring in everlasting righteousness, # 9:24 Is 51:6,8; 56:1; Jr 23:5–6; Rm 3:21–22

to seal up vision and prophecy,

and to anoint the most holy place.

25Know and understand this:

From the issuing of the decree

to restore and rebuild Jerusalem # 9:25 Ezr 4:24; 6:1–15; Neh 2:1–8; 3:1

until an Anointed One, # 9:25 Mt 1:17; Jn 1:41; 4:25 the ruler, # 9:25 Or until an anointed one, a prince

will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.

It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,

but in difficult times.

26After those sixty-two weeks

the Anointed One will be cut off # 9:26 Is 53:8; Mk 9:12; Lk 24:26

and will have nothing.

The people of the coming ruler

will destroy the city # 9:26 Mt 24:2; Mk 13:2; Lk 19:43–44 and the sanctuary. # 9:26 MT; Theod, some mss read The city and the sanctuary will be destroyed when the ruler comes.

The # 9:26 Lit Its, or His end will come with a flood, # 9:26 Nah 1:8

and until the end there will be # 9:26 Or end of a war;

desolations are decreed.

27He will make a firm covenant # 9:27 Or will enforce a covenant

with many for one week,

but in the middle of the week

he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.

And the abomination of desolation # 9:27 Dn 11:31; Mt 24:15; Mk 13:14; Lk 21:20

1In the shnat achat (first year) of Daryavesh ben Achashverosh, by zera (descent) a Mede, who was made melech over the realm of the Kasdim (Chaldeans); 2In the shnat achat of his reign, I, Daniel, received binah (understanding) from the Sfarim (books, Kitvei Hakodesh) of the number of the shanim, that the Devar Hashem was unto Yirmeyah HaNavi, with respect to the desolations of Yerushalayim, SHIVIM SHANAH must be completed.#9:2 Jer 25:11; 29:10

3And I set my face unto Adonoi HaElohim, to plead by tefillah and tachanunim (supplications), with a tzom, and sackcloth, and ashes; 4And I davened unto Hashem Elohai, and I made vidduy (confession of sin), and said, O Adonoi, HaEl HaGadol V'HaNorah (the great and dreadful G-d), Shomer HaBrit V'HaChesed (Who keepeth covenant and lovingkindness) to them that love Him, and to them that are shomrei mitzvot; 5We have sinned, and we have committed iniquity, and we have done wickedly, and we have rebelled, even by departing from Thy mitzvot and from Thy mishpatim; 6Neither have we heeded or listened unto Thy avadim the nevi'im, which spoke in Thy Name unto our Melachim, our Sarim (princes), and our Avot, and to kol Am HaAretz. 7To Thee, Adonoi, is the tzedakah, but unto us is boshet hapanim (shame of face), as at yom hazeh; to the men of Yehudah, and to the yoshvei Yerushalayim, and unto kol Yisroel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither Thou hast driven them, because of their ma'al (betrayal, treachery) wherein they have dealt unfaithfully against Thee. 8O Hashem, to us belongeth boshet hapanim, to our Melachim, to our Sarim (princes), and to our Avot, because we have sinned against Thee. 9To Adonoi Eloheinu belong the rachamim and the selichot (forgiveness), for we have rebelled against Him; 10Neither have we obeyed the voice of Hashem Eloheinu, to walk in His torot, which He has set before us by the hand of His avadim the Nevi'im. 11Yea, kol Yisroel has transgressed Thy Torah, even by departing, refusing to obey Thy kol (voice); therefore ha'alah#9:11 Dt 29:18 (the curse) is poured upon us, and hashevu'ah (the oath) that is written in the Torat Moshe the Eved HaElohim, because we have sinned against Him.#9:11 Lv 26:14f; Dt 28:15f 12And He hath confirmed His words, which He spoke concerning us, and concerning our shofetim who judged us, that He would bring upon us a ra'ah gedolah, so that there has not been done under kol HaShomayim what has been done to Yerushalayim. 13Even as it is written in the Torat Moshe, all hara'ah hazot (this evil) is come upon us, yet we have not mollified the face of Hashem Eloheinu, by turning away from avoneinu (our iniquities), and by having seichel (discernment) in Thy Emes. 14Therefore hath Hashem watched upon the rah, and brought it upon us; for Hashem Eloheinu is tzaddik in all His ma'asim which He doeth, for we obeyed not His kol (voice). 15And now, Adonoi Eloheinu, Who hast brought Thy people forth out of Eretz Mitzrayim with a yad chazakah (mighty hand), and hast gotten Thee renown, as at yom hazeh, we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16O Adonoi, according to all Thy tzidkot, I beseech Thee, let Thine anger and Thy fury be turned away from Thy Ir (City) Yerushalayim, Thy Har Kodesh, because for chatta'einu, and for the avonot Avoteinu, Yerushalayim and Thy people are become a reproach, an object of scorn to all around about us. 17Now therefore, shema, Eloheinu, hear the tefillah of Thy eved, and his tachanunim (supplications), and cause Thy face to shine upon Thy Mikdash#9:17 Beis HaMikdash that is desolate, lema'an (for the sake of) Adonoi. 18O Elohai, incline Thine ear, and shema; open Thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and HaIr which is called by Thy Name; for we do not present tachanuneinu (our supplications) before Thee on account of tzidkoteinu, but for the sake of Thy rachamim harabbim. 19Adonoi, hear; Adonoi, forgive; Adonoi, hearken and act; delay not, for Thine own sake, O Elohai; for Thy city and Thy people are called by Thy Name.

20And while I was speaking, and davening tefillos, and making vidduy (confession of sin) for me and for Ami Yisroel, and laying my techinnah (petition) before Hashem Elohai for the sake of the Har Kodesh of Elohai; 21Yea, while I was davening in tefillah, even haish#9:21 See Dan 8:15 Gavriel, whom I had seen in the chazon in the beginning, being caused to come in full flight, reached me about the time of the minchat erev. 22And he instructed me, and spoke with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to make thee have seichel in binah. 23At the beginning of thy tachanunim (supplications) a commandment went forth, and I am come to make the word known; for thou art greatly valued; therefore understand the devar, and consider the vision.

24Shivi'im heptads is decreed upon thy people and upon thy Ir Kodesh (Holy City), to restrain the peysha (transgression), and to make an end of chattat (sin), and to make kapporah for avon, and to bring in Tzedek Olamim (Everlasting Righteousness), and to seal up the chazon and navi, and to anoint the Kodesh HaKodashim. 25Have da'as, therefore, and get seichel, that from the going forth of the decree to restore and to rebuild Yerushalayim unto Moshiach Nagid shall be shivah heptads, and threescore and two heptads; the rechov shall be built again, and the charutz, even in troublous times. 26And after threescore and two heptads, yikaret (will be cut off) Moshiach,#9:26 Isa 53:8 but not for himself;#9:26 Isa 53:4-6,8 and the troops of the coming nagid shall destroy the Ir and the Kodesh [Beis Hamikdash];#9:26 i.e., 70.C.E and the end thereof shall come with a flood, and unto the end there shall be war. Desolations are determined. 27And he shall confirm brit (covenant) with rabbim for one heptad; and in the midst of the heptad he shall cause the zevach and the minchah to cease, and on the kenaf (wing) of the abominations is one making desolate, even until the complete destruction, a destruction that is decreed, shall be poured out upon the Shomem (Desolator, Destroyer).
