Acts 24

The Accusation against Paul

1Five days later Ananias # 24:1 Ac 23:2 the high priest came down with some elders and a lawyer named Tertullus. These men presented their case against Paul to the governor. # 24:1 Ac 21:27; 23:2,24,30 2When Paul was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him and said, “We enjoy great peace because of you, and reforms are taking place for the benefit of this nation because of your foresight. 3We acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent # 24:3 Lk 1:3; Ac 23:26; 26:25 Felix, with utmost gratitude. 4But, so that I will not burden you any further, I request that you would be kind enough to give us a brief hearing. 5For we have found this man to be a plague, # 24:5 Ac 16:20; 17:6 an agitator # 24:5 Ac 21:28; 26:5; 28:22 among all the Jews throughout the Roman world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. # 24:5 Mt 2:23; 26:71; Mk 1:24; 10:47; 16:6; Lk 18:37; 24:19; Jn 19:19; Ac 2:22; 3:6; 4:10; 6:14; 22:8 6He even tried to desecrate the temple, and so we apprehended him. # 24:6 Some mss include vv. 6b-8a: and wanted to judge him according to our law. 7But Lysias the commander came and took him from our hands with great force, 8commanding his accusers to come to you. 8By examining him yourself you will be able to discern the truth about these charges we are bringing against him.” 9The Jews also joined in the attack, alleging that these things were true.

Paul’s Defense before Felix

10When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied, “Because I know you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I am glad to offer my defense in what concerns me. # 24:9–10 Ac 23:24; 1Th 2:16 11You can verify for yourself that it is no more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem. # 24:11 Ac 21:27; 24:1 12They didn’t find me arguing with anyone or causing a disturbance among the crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or anywhere in the city. # 24:12 Ac 25:8; 28:17 13Neither can they prove the charges they are now making against me. 14But I admit this to you: I worship the God of my ancestors according to the Way, # 24:14 Ac 9:2; 22:4; 24:22 which they call a sect, believing everything that is in accordance with the law and written in the prophets. # 24:14 Ac 3:13; 26:22; 28:23 15I have a hope in God, which these men themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection, # 24:15 Other mss add of the dead,# 24:15 Ac 23:6; 28:20 both of the righteous and the unrighteous. # 24:15 Dn 12:2; Jn 5:28–29 16I always strive to have a clear conscience # 24:16 Ac 23:1; 1Co 4:4; 1Tm 3:9; 2Tm 1:5; Heb 13:18; 1Pt 3:16 toward God and men. 17After many years, I came to bring charitable gifts and offerings to my people. # 24:17 Ac 11:29; Rm 15:25–28; 1Co 16:1–3; 2Co 8:1–4; Gl 2:10 18While I was doing this, some Jews from Asia found me ritually purified in the temple, without a crowd and without any uproar. # 24:18 Ac 21:26–27; 26:21 19It is they who ought to be here before you to bring charges, if they have anything against me. 20Or let these men here state what wrongdoing they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin, 21other than this one statement I shouted while standing among them, ‘Today I am on trial before you concerning the resurrection of the dead.’ ”

The Verdict Postponed

22Since Felix was well informed about the Way, # 24:22 Ac 9:2; 22:4; 24:14 he adjourned the hearing, saying, “When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case.” 23He ordered that the centurion keep Paul under guard, though he could have some freedom, and that he should not prevent any of his friends from meeting # 24:23 Other mss add or visiting his needs. # 24:23 Ac 23:35; 27:3; 28:16

24Several days later, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and listened to him on the subject of faith in Christ Jesus. 25Now as he spoke about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, # 24:25 Gl 5:23; Ti 2:12; 2Pt 1:6 Felix became afraid and replied, “Leave for now, but when I have an opportunity I’ll call for you.” 26At the same time he was also hoping that Paul would offer him money. # 24:26 Other mss add so that he might release him So he sent for him quite often and conversed with him.

27After two years had passed, Porcius Festus # 24:27 Ac 25:1,4,9; 26:24 succeeded Felix, and because Felix wanted to do the Jews a favor, # 24:27 Ac 12:3; 25:9 he left Paul in prison. # 24:27 Ac 23:35; 25:14

1And after chamash yamim, the Kohen Gadol Chananyah came down with some Zekenim and an orator, a certain Tertullus, who explained to the Moshel the charges keneged (against) Rav Sha'ul. 2And when Rav Sha'ul had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Your Excellency, much shalom has been attained through you, and reforms have come to this nation by your foresight. 3This in every way and everywhere, we acknowledge, most excellent Felix, with todah rabbah. 4But in order that I may not detain you any longer, I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly. 5For having found this man a troublemaker and an inciter of riots among all the Yehudim throughout kol ha'aretz, a manhig of the kat,#24:5 of Judaism the Natzrati Kat. 6He even tried to desecrate the Beis Hamikdash! And so we apprehended him, [and would have tried him according to our own law; 7But the sar haelef Lysias came, and with great ko'ach took him away out of our hands, and ordered his adversaries to come unto you.] 8When you examine him, you will be able to find out yourself regarding all these things of which we accuse him. 9And the rest of the Judeans joined in the attack, saying that these things were so.

10And when the Moshel nodded to him to speak, Rav Sha'ul answered, Knowing that for many years you have been a shofet (judge) to this nation, I cheerfully make my hitstaddekut. 11You will be able to learn that not more than twelve days have elapsed since I made an aliyah to worship in Yerushalayim. 12And neither in the Beis Hamikdash did they find me conversing with anyone nor did they find me stirring up the multitude either in the shuls or anywhere in Yerushalayim. 13Nor are they able to prove to you concerning the things of which now they are accusing me. 14For Ani modeh (I confess) this to you, that according to the Derech Hashem, which they call a “kat”,#24:14 of Judaism I serve the Elohei Avoteinu, having emunah in everything written according to the Torah and the Nevi'im. 15I have a tikvah (hope) in Hashem, which also these ones themselves anticipate, the coming Techiyas HaMesim of both the Tzaddikim and the Resha'im. 16In view of this, I always do my best to keep a matzpun naki (clear conscience) before Hashem and before anashim. 17Now after many years, I came bringing nedavot (donations) to my people and also to make korbanot (sacrifices). 18And this is how they found me, having undergone purification in the Beis Hamikdash, not with rioters nor with any disturbance. 19But there were some Yehudim from the Province of Asia who ought to be present before you to make accusation, if they might have something against me. 20Or let these themselves say what crime they found in me when they stood me before the Sanhedrin, 21unless it is about this one statement, which I stood and cried out among them, and that statement was concerning the Techiyas HaMesim, and it is for this that I am being judged today by you.

22But Felix, who was already rather well informed about the Derech Hashem, adjourned the meeting, saying, When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case. 23Then Felix gave orders to the centurion to guard Rav Sha'ul, but to grant him considerable liberty and not to prevent his chaverim from ministering to his needs.

24And after some yamim, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was Jewish. He summoned Rav Sha'ul and listened to him concerning his emunah (faith) in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua. 25And as Rav Sha'ul was conversing about tzedek#24:25 Dan 9:24 and kibush hayetzer (self-control) and about the Yom HaDin coming, Felix suddenly became afraid, and said, That will do for the moment. Go now. When I find time, I'll send for you. 26At the same time Felix was also hoping that bribe money would be given to him by Rav Sha'ul. Therefore, Felix used to frequently send for Rav Sha'ul to converse with him. 27When two years passed, Felix received a successor, Porcius Festus, and, wanting to grant a favor to the Judeans, Felix left Rav Sha'ul in custody.
