David’s Kindness to Mephibosheth
1David asked, “Is there anyone remaining from the family of Saul I can show kindness#Gn 19:19; 24:12; 40:14; 47:29; Jos 2:12; Jdg 8:35; 2Sm 2:6 to for Jonathan’s sake?” #1Sm 18:3; 20:14–17,42 2There was a servant of Saul’s family named Ziba.#2Sm 16:1–4 They summoned him to David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”
“I am your servant,” he replied.
3So the king asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul’s family that I can show the kindness of God to?”
Ziba said to the king, “There is still Jonathan’s son who was injured in both feet.”#2Sm 4:4
4The king asked him, “Where is he?”
Ziba answered the king, “You’ll find him in Lo-debar at the house of Machir son of Ammiel.” 5So King David had him brought from the house of Machir son of Ammiel in Lo-debar.
6Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul came to David, fell facedown, and paid homage. David said, “Mephibosheth!”
“I am your servant,” he replied.
7“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “since I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul’s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”#1Kg 2:7
8Mephibosheth paid homage and said, “What is your servant that you take an interest in a dead dog#1Sm 24:14; 2Sm 16:9 like me?”
9Then the king summoned Saul’s attendant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family. 10You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master’s grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all my lord the king commands.”
So Mephibosheth ate at David’s#9:11 LXX; Syr reads the king’s; Vg reads your; MT reads my table just like one of the king’s sons. 12Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica.#1Ch 8:34 All those living in Ziba’s house were Mephibosheth’s servants. 13However, Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king’s table. His feet had been injured.

Covenant Loyalty to Mephibosheth
1Then David inquired, “Is there anyone still left from the house of Saul, so that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
2Now there was a servant from Saul’s house whose name was Ziba, so they summoned him to David. The king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” “Your servant,” he said.
3The king asked him, “Is there still anyone from the house of Saul to whom I may show the kindness of God?” “There is still a son of Jonathan,” Ziba said to the king, “with crippled legs.”
4“Where is he?” the king said to him. Ziba said to the king, “He’s there, in the house of Machir son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar.”
5So King David sent word and brought him from the house of Machir son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar.
6Then Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan son of Saul, came to David, fell on his face and prostrated himself. “Mephibosheth!” David said. “Behold your servant!” he answered. “Don’t be afraid,”
7David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat bread at my table.”
8Then he bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should turn to look at such a dead dog like me?”
9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his household I have given to your master’s son.
10So you, you and your sons and your servants will till the land for him, and you will bring in the yield so that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son will always eat bread at my table.” Now Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants.
11Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” Thus Mephibosheth used to eat at the table just like one of the king’s sons.
12Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. All the members of Ziba’s household were servants to Mephibosheth.
13But Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate at the king’s table regularly, though he was crippled in both his legs.
