2 Corinthians 13

Final Warnings and Exhortations
1This is the third time I am coming to you. # 13:1 2Co 12:14 Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. # 13:1 Dt 17:6; 19:15,# 13:1 Dt 17:6; 19:15 2I gave a warning when I was present the second time, and now I give a warning # 13:2 Gl 5:21; 1Th 3:4 while I am absent to those who sinned before and to all the rest: If I come again, I will not be lenient, 3since you seek proof of Christ speaking in me. # 13:3 Mt 10:20; 1Co 5:4 He is not weak in dealing with you, but powerful among you. 4For he was crucified # 13:4 Mt 27:22; Php 2:7–8 in weakness, but he lives # 13:4 Rm 14:9; Php 1:21; 1Pt 3:18 by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, # 13:4 2Co 12:10 but in dealing with you we will live # 13:4 Rm 6:4,8 with him by God’s power.
5Test # 13:5 Jms 1:13 yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Or do you yourselves not recognize that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless you fail the test. # 13:5 Or you are disqualified, or you are counterfeit 6And I hope you will recognize that we ourselves do not fail the test. 7But we pray to God that you do nothing wrong — not that we may appear to pass the test, but that you may do what is right, # 13:7 1Pt 2:12 even though we may appear to fail. 8For we can’t do anything against the truth, # 13:8 2Th 2:10 but only for the truth. 9We rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. # 13:9 Ac 25:5 We also pray that you become fully mature. # 13:9 Or become complete, or be restored 10This is why I am writing these things while absent, so that when I am there I may not have to deal harshly with you, in keeping with the authority the Lord gave me for building up # 13:10 1Co 14:3 and not for tearing down. # 13:10 2Co 10:4,8
11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. # 13:11 Or farewell Become mature, be encouraged, # 13:11 Or listen to my appeal be of the same mind, # 13:11 Rm 12:16; Php 1:7 be at peace, # 13:11 Mk 9:50; Rm 16:20; 2Tm 1:2 and the God of love # 13:11 1Jn 4:16 and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. # 13:12 Rm 16:16; 1Co 16:20; 1Th 5:26; 1Pt 5:14 All the saints send you greetings.
13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love # 13:13 1Co 13:1; 1Jn 4:16 of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. # 13:12–13 Some translations divide these two vv. into three vv. so that v. 13 begins with All the saints . . .and v. 14 begins with The grace of . . .,# 13:13 2Th 3:16

2 Corinthians 13

1This is the pa'am hashlishit I am coming to you;#13:1 2C 12:14 by the PI SHNAYIM SHLOSHAH EDIM#13:1 Dt 19:15 (by the mouth of two or three witnesses), every dvar shall be established. 2I warned those who committed averos before and all the rest, and, now absent, I warn them again, as I did when I made pakad (visit) the pa'am hashenit, that if I come again, I will not spare, I will not be lenient, 3Als (since) you seek to test if Moshiach is speaking in me. Moshiach is not weak toward you, but is GIBBOR in you.#13:3 Isa 9:5 4For indeed he was talui al HaEtz#13:4 Dt 21:23 (being hanged on the Tree) out of weakness,#13:4 Pp 2:7-8 but Moshiach lives by the gevurat Hashem. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet we will live with him by the gevurat Hashem (the power of G-d) toward you.
5Perform a bedikah (examination) on yourselves to see if you are in the#13:5 Orthodox Jewish emunah (faith). Test and prove yourselves.#13:5 1C 11:28 Or do you yourselves not have da'as that Moshiach is in you? Unless you are reprobate and unapproved.#13:5 Lam 3:40 6But I have tikvah that you will have da'as that we are not unapproved. 7Now we daven (pray) to Hashem that you do not do any rah (evil), not that we Shlichim may appear to have stood the test, but that you may do hatov (the good), though we may seem to have failed. 8For we are not able to do anything against HaEmes, but only for HaEmes.#13:8 1C 13:6 9For we have lev same'ach when we are megareia (weakened) and you are strong, for this also we daven (pray), that is, for your shelemut (perfection), your tikkun (restoration repair). 10Therefore, while I am absent I write this iggeret so that when I am present I may not treat you with severity, according to the samchut (authority) which Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu gave me for your chozek (strength) and not for your churban.#13:10 2C 2:3; 10:8,11
11For the rest, Achim b'Moshiach, rejoice with simcha.#13:11 Pp 4:4 Come to order and chazzak (be strong)! Have achdus (unity) in your machshavot (thoughts). Live in shalom. And the G-d of ahavah and shalom will be with you.#13:11 Ro 15:33 12Greet one another with a neshikat hakodesh. 13All the Kedoshim say, “Shalom!” 14The Chen v'Chesed Adoneinu Moshiach and the ahavas Hashem and the dveykus HaRuach Hakodesh be with you all.#13:14 [Zohar telat rishin khad hu, three heads are one, Zohar vol iii p.288 versa Amsterdam Edition.] Rav Sha'ul has “boasted” of his weaknesses. The hardships he tells us about in chapters 4:8-9; 6:4-5; 11:23-29; 12:10 are evidence that Hashem has been the author of his ministry which would otherwise have been impossible if G-d did not show His strength through weak and unworthy vessels, which is what all ministers are. This letter was written more than ten years before Rav Sha'ulʼs martyrdom.
