Honoring Masters
1All who are under the yoke as slaves should regard their own masters#6:1 Or owners as worthy of all respect, so that God’s name#Jn 10:25; Ac 15:14; Rv 14:1 and his teaching will not be blasphemed. 2Let those who have believing masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brothers, but serve them even better, since those who benefit from their service are believers and dearly loved.#6:2 Or because, as believers who are dearly loved, they are devoted to others’ welfare#2Th 2:12; 1Jn 4:16
False Doctrine and Human Greed
Teach and encourage these things. 3If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord#Rv 11:8 Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness,#2Pt 1:3 4he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments over words.#2Tm 2:14,23; Ti 3:9 From these come envy,#Ps 37:1 quarreling,#Ti 3:9 slander,#Rv 13:6 evil suspicions, 5and constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain.#6:5 Other mss add From such people withdraw yourself.#Eph 4:22; 2Tm 3:8; Ti 1:11,15 6But godliness with contentment is great gain.#Ps 37:16; Pr 15:16; 16:8; Php 4:11; Heb 13:5 7For we brought nothing into the world, and#6:7 Other mss add it is clear that we can take nothing out.#Jb 1:21; Ps 49:17; Ec 5:15 8If we have food and clothing,#6:8 Or food and shelter we will be content with these. 9But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root#6:10 Or is the root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith#Php 1:27; 1Tm 1:2; Jd 3 and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Fight the Good Fight
11But you, man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,#1Co 13:1 endurance,#Rv 13:10 and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight#2Tm 4:7; Jd 3 of the faith. Take hold of eternal life#1Jn 5:12 to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13In the presence of God, who gives life to all,#Mk 13:19; Rm 1:25 and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate,#Mt 27:11–14 I charge you 14to keep this command without fault or failure until the appearing#Ti 2:13; 1Jn 2:28 of our Lord#Rv 11:8 Jesus Christ. 15God will bring this about in his own time.#Lk 21:8 He is the blessed and only#Rm 16:27 Sovereign, the King of kings,#Rv 17:14 and the Lord of lords,#Dt 10:17; Ps 136:2–3; Rv 17:14; 19:16 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light,#Ps 36:9; 104:2; Jn 12:46 whom no one has seen or can see,#Ex 33:20; Jn 1:18 to him be honor and eternal power.#Jd 25 Amen.#1Tm 1:17; Rv 22:21
Instructions to the Rich
17Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant#1Sm 2:3; Ec 7:8; Rm 11:20; 12:16 or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God,#6:17 Other mss read on the living God who richly provides us with all things#Ac 17:25 to enjoy. 18Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works,#Mk 14:6; Gl 3:10; Jms 2:14–26; 1Pt 2:12 to be generous and willing to share,#Rm 12:8,13; Eph 4:28 19storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age,#Mt 6:20 so that they may take hold of what is truly life.
Guard the Heritage
20Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you,#1Tm 1:11; 2Tm 1:12,14; Ti 1:3 avoiding#Heb 12:13 irreverent and empty speech and contradictions from what is falsely called knowledge.#Col 2:8; 2Tm 2:16; 4:4; Ti 1:14 21By professing it, some#2Tm 2:18 people have departed from the faith.#Php 1:27; 1Tm 1:2
Grace be with you all.

1 Timothy 6

1All who are slaves should show full respect to their masters. Then no one will speak against God’s name and our teaching. 2Some slaves have masters who are believers. This means they are all brothers. But the slaves should not show their masters any less respect. They should serve their masters even better, because they are helping believers they love.
False Teaching and True Riches
You must teach and preach these things. 3If anyone has a different teaching, he does not accept the true teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. And that teaching shows him the true way to serve God. 4The person who teaches falsely is full of pride and understands nothing. He is sick with a love for arguing and fighting about words. And that brings jealousy, making trouble, insults, and evil mistrust. 5And that also brings arguments from men who have evil minds. They have lost the truth. They think that serving God is a way to get rich.
6It is true that serving God makes a person very rich, if he is satisfied with what he has. 7When we came into the world, we brought nothing. And when we die, we can take nothing out. 8So, if we have food and clothes, we will be satisfied with that. 9Those who want to become rich bring temptation to themselves. They are caught in a trap. They begin to want many foolish things that will hurt them, things that ruin and destroy people. 10The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people have left the true faith because they want to get more and more money. But they have caused themselves much sorrow.
Some Things to Remember
11But you are a man of God. So you should stay away from all those things. Try to live in the right way, serve God, have faith, love, patience, and gentleness. 12Keeping your faith is like running a race. Try as hard as you can to win. Be sure you receive the life that continues forever. You were called to have that life. And you confessed the great truth about Christ in a way that many people heard. 13Before God and Christ Jesus I give you a command. Christ Jesus confessed that same great truth when he stood before Pontius Pilate. And God gives life to everything. Now I tell you: 14Do the things you were commanded to do. Do them without wrong or blame until the time when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 15God will make that happen at the right time. He is the blessed and only Ruler. He is the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords. 16God is the only One who never dies. He lives in light so bright that men cannot go near it. No one has ever seen God, or can see him. May honor and power belong to God forever. Amen.
17Give this command to those who are rich with things of this world. Tell them not to be proud. Tell them to hope in God, not their money. Money cannot be trusted, but God takes care of us richly. He gives us everything to enjoy. 18Tell the rich people to do good and to be rich in doing good deeds. Tell them to be happy to give and ready to share. 19By doing that, they will be saving a treasure for themselves in heaven. That treasure will be a strong foundation. Their future life can be built on that treasure. Then they will be able to have the life that is true life.
20Timothy, God has trusted you with many things. Keep those things safe. Stay away from people who say foolish things that are not from God. Stay away from those who argue against the truth. They use something they call “knowledge,” but it is really not knowledge. 21They say that they have that “knowledge,” but they have left the true faith.
God’s grace be with you.
