Instructions on Prayer
1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2for kings and all those who are in authority, # 2:2 Ezr 6:10; Rm 13:1; 1Co 2:1 so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness # 2:2 2Pt 1:3 and dignity. # 2:2 1Tm 3:4; Ti 2:7 3This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, # 2:3 1Tm 1:1 4who wants everyone # 2:4 Ti 2:11 to be saved # 2:4 Ezk 18:23,32; Jn 3:17; 1Tm 4:10; Ti 2:11; 2Pt 3:9 and to come to the knowledge of the truth. # 2:4 Jn 14:6,17
5For there is one God # 2:5 Dt 6:4; Gl 3:20 and one mediator # 2:5 Heb 8:6 between God and mankind, the man # 2:5 Jn 1:14; Php 2:7; 3:3; 1Jn 4:2; 5:20 Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, # 2:6 Mt 20:28; Gl 1:4 a testimony at the proper time.
7For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle # 2:7 Eph 3:7–8; 1Tm 1:11; 2Tm 1:11 (I am telling the truth; # 2:7 Other mss add in Christ I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles # 2:7 Ac 9:15 in faith and truth.
Instructions to Men and Women
8Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument. # 2:8 Mk 7:21; Lk 9:46–47; 24:38; Rm 14:1; Php 2:14 9Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, # 2:9 1Pt 3:3 with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, # 2:9 Rv 3:18 pearls, or expensive apparel, 10but with good works, # 2:10 2Co 9:8; Gl 3:10 as is proper for women who profess to worship God. 11A woman is to learn quietly with full submission. # 2:11 1Co 14:34; Ti 2:5 12I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. # 2:13 Gn 2:7,22; 3:16; 1Co 11:8–12 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. # 2:14 Gn 3:6,13; 2Co 11:3 15But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, # 2:15 1Th 3:12–4:10 with good sense.

1I urge, therefore, of first importance, davening, techinnah (supplication), tefillah (prayer), bakkashot (petitions), and hodayah (thanksgiving) be made on behalf of kol Bnei Adam (all mankind), 2On behalf of malchei eretz (kings) and on behalf of all the ones in authority, that we may lead a life of chayyei menuchah (life of rest) in all chasidus (piety) and yirat Shomayim (reverence). 3This is good and acceptable before Hashem Moshieinu, 4Who wants kol Bnei Adam to have Yeshu'at Eloheynu (the Salvation of our G-d) and to come to da'as HaEmes (knowledge of the truth). 5For Adonoi echad hu (there is one G-d) and there is also metavekh echad#2:5 Job 33:23; Isa 43:27; cf. Dt 5:5,19-28 (one melitz), one between Hashem and kol Bnei Adam, the man Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua, 6The one who gave his nefesh#2:6 Isa 53:10-12 as a kofer (ransom), on behalf of all. The edut (testimony) of this was given at the right time. 7And for this edut I was given the s'michah (ordination) of Hashem as a karoz (herald), a maggid,#2:7 darshan (preacher) for Moshiach a Shliach (Moshiachʼs emissary) — I speak Emes, I do not speak sheker — and a [rabbinic] moreh (teacher) for the Nations in emunah and Emes.
8I want, therefore, kol bnei Adam to daven in every shul, lifting up yadayim kodesh (holy hands) without ka'as (anger) and madon (strife). 9Similarly also nashim (women) should adorn themselves with respectable comportment and tznius (modesty, piety) in appearance and with decency and propriety, not with coiffures and gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10But with what is proper for nashim professing yirat Shomayim, that is, by means of ma'asim tovim (good works). 11Let the isha (wife) learn in silence in all submission. 12I do not allow an isha (wife) either to have teaching authority over or to have hishtaltut (domination, taking control) over [her] man, but to be in silence. 13For Adam was formed rishonah (first), then Chavah. 14And Adam was not deceived, but the isha, having been deceived, has come to be in averah (transgression). 15But womankind will be saved through her childbearing if nashim remain in emunah and ahavah and kedushah with tznius.#2:15 2:9
