Paul’s Conduct
1For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our visit # 2:1 Ac 17:1–9 with you was not without result. 2On the contrary, after we had previously suffered # 2:2 Ac 16:19–24 and were treated outrageously in Philippi, # 2:2 Php 1:1 as you know, we were emboldened by our God to speak the gospel of God to you in spite of great opposition. 3For our exhortation didn’t come from error or impurity # 2:3 1Th 4:7 or an intent to deceive. # 2:3 Ps 10:7 4Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted # 2:4 Lk 16:11 with the gospel, # 2:4 Ac 15:7; Gl 2:7; 1Tm 1:11 so we speak, not to please people, but rather God, # 2:4 Jn 5:44; 12:43; 1Co 4:5; 2Co 10:18; Gl 1:10; Php 3:19; 1Th 2:15; 1Pt 3:4 who examines our hearts. # 2:4 Ps 17:3; Pr 21:2; Rm 8:27 5For we never used flattering speech, as you know, or had greedy # 2:5 Eph 5:3 motives # 2:5 Mk 12:40; Lk 20:47; Jn 15:22; Ac 27:30; Php 1:18 — God is our witness # 2:5 Rm 1:9 — 6and we didn’t seek glory # 2:6 Php 3:19 from people, either from you or from others. 7Although we could have been a burden as Christ’s apostles, # 2:7 Ac 1:2; Jd 17 instead we were gentle # 2:7 Many mss read infants among you, as a nurse # 2:7 Or nursing mother nurtures her own children. 8We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. 9For you remember our labor and hardship, brothers and sisters. Working # 2:9 2Jn 8 night and day so that we would not burden any of you, we preached God’s gospel to you. 10You are witnesses, # 2:10 Rm 1:9 and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, # 2:10 Ti 2:12 and blamelessly # 2:10 1Th 5:23 we conducted ourselves with you believers. 11As you know, like a father with his own children, # 2:11 1Co 4:14; Gl 4:19; 1Tm 1:2; Phm 10 12we encouraged, comforted, and implored each one of you to walk worthy of God, # 2:12 3Jn 6 who calls you into his own kingdom # 2:12 Mk 1:15; Ac 20:25 and glory. # 2:12 Lk 9:32; 24:26; Jn 17:24; 2Co 3:18; 1Pt 5:1; 2Pt 3:18
Reception and Opposition to the Message
13This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, # 2:13 2Th 3:1 the word of God, # 2:13 Lk 8:21 which also works effectively in you who believe. 14For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, # 2:14 Lk 1:5 since you have also suffered # 2:14 Php 1:29 the same things from people of your own country, # 2:14 Ac 17:5 just as they did from the Jews 15who killed the Lord Jesus # 2:15 Lk 24:20 and the prophets and persecuted us. # 2:15 Rm 11:3 They displease God and are hostile to everyone, 16by keeping us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. As a result, they are constantly filling up their sins to the limit, # 2:16 Mt 23:30–32 and wrath has overtaken them at last. # 2:16 Or to the end
Paul’s Desire to See Them
17But as for us, brothers and sisters, after we were forced to leave you # 2:17 Lit orphaned from you for a short time (in person, not in heart # 2:17 Col 2:5), we greatly desired and made every effort to return # 2:17 1Th 3:10 and see you face to face. 18So we wanted to come to you — even I, Paul, time and again — but Satan # 2:18 Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10 hindered us. 19For who is our hope or joy # 2:19 Jn 15:11; 2Co 6:10 or crown # 2:19 Rv 12:1 of boasting # 2:19 2Co 12:5; Jms 4:16 in the presence of our Lord # 2:19 Rv 11:8 Jesus at his coming? # 2:19 1Th 1:10; 1Jn 2:28 Is it not you? # 2:19 1Co 15:31; 2Co 1:14; Php 4:1; 2Th 1:4 20Indeed you are our glory # 2:20 Jn 12:43; Php 3:19 and joy!

1 Thessalonians 2
2
1But you yourselves know, Chaverim b'Moshiach, that our initial reception with you was not empty of result. 2On the contrary, having suffered before and having been shamefully persecuted (as you know) in Philippi, we had the chozek b'Eloheinu (strength in our G-d) to speak to you the Besuras HaGeulah of Hashem in the face of tzorrim rabbim (great and oppressive enemy opposition). 3For our appeal, our eidus (witness of testimony), does not spring from toyus (error) or meshuga delusion or from tum'a (uncleanness) or from remiyah (guile, deceit). 4On the contrary, in this way we speak: as persons examined and approved by G-d to be entrusted with the Besuras HaGeulah of Hashem, as striving to please not men but Hashem who tests, who examines, our levavot. 5Nor did we ever come with divrei chanuppah (words of flattery), as you know, nor with pretext for chamdanut (greed) — Der Oybershter is mine eidus! (G-d is my witness!) 6Nor seeking kavod from men, neither from you nor from others. 7Even though we had the samchut#2:7 authority to be able to throw our weight around as Shlichim (Emissaries) of Moshiach, yet we became anav (humble) and eidel (gentle) among you, as a nursing imma (mother) might take care of her own yeladim. 8Thus having a tshuka (yearning) for you, it was our good pleasure to share with you not only the Besuras HaGeulah of Hashem, but also our very lives, because you became beloved chaverim to us.
9For remember, Achim b'Moshiach, our labor and toil yomam valailah working for the purpose of not weighing down any one of you while we maggidim [for Moshiach] made the Hachrazah (Proclamation, Kerygma) to you of the Besuras HaGeulah of Hashem. 10You were edim (witnesses) and so is Hashem, with what kedushah and tzedek and tamim manner of shomer masoret we acted toward you ma'aminim b'Moshiach, 11For you know how we treated you, as an abba treats his own yeladim, 12Exhorting you with divrei chizzuk and comforting you, addressing you with solemn edut (testimony) that you let your derech (way of life), your hitnahagut (conduct), be to fier zich (comport oneself) in a manner worthy of Hashem, who summons you to His own Malchut and Kavod.
13And for this reason also we constantly offer hodayah to Hashem that when you received [as “Ani Maamin” authoritative teaching] the Dvar Hashem, the Word of Hachrazah (Proclamation, Kerygma) from us, you received it not as the dvar HaBnei Adam but, as it actually is, the Dvar Hashem, which also is at work in you who have emunah. 14For you became imitators, Chaverim, of the kehillot Hashem in Moshiach Yehoshua which are in Yehudah, because you also were similarly persecuted by your own landslait, just as also they were by the ones in Yehudah, 15Even the ones who caused the histalkus of [Moshiach] Adoneinu Yehoshua and killed the Nevi'im and persecuted us#2:15 Shlichim severely. Indeed, they are not pleasing Hashem and are hostile to kol Bnei Adam, 16By hindering us from speaking to the Goyim in order that the Goyim might find Yeshu'at Eloheinu. Thus they always make complete their peysha'im. So the charon af, the burning wrath, the furious retribution of Hashem has overtaken them at last.
17But you, Achim b'Moshiach, while we were separated from you for a short time panim el panim, not b'lev, we made all the more effort in much desire to see your penemer (faces). 18For we wanted to come to you. Indeed I, [Rav] Sha'ul, did again and again; but HaSatan hindered us. 19For who is our tikvah or simcha or crown to glory in before Adoneinu Yehoshua at His Parousia, at the Bias Moshiach — is it not you? 20For you are our kavod and simcha.
