David Delivered from Saul
1Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David.#1Sm 18:8–9 But Saul’s son Jonathan liked David very much,#1Sm 18:1–3 2so he told him, “My father, Saul, intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning and hide in a secret place and stay there. 3I’ll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and talk to him about you. When I see what he says, I’ll tell you.”#1Sm 20:32–33
4Jonathan spoke well of David to his father, Saul. He said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David.#Gn 44:22; Pr 17:13; Jr 18:20 He hasn’t sinned against you; in fact, his actions have been a great advantage to you. 5He took his life in his hands when he struck down the Philistine,#1Sm 17:42–51 and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel.#1Sm 11:13 You saw it and rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?” #Dt 19:10–13; 1Sm 20:32
6Saul listened to Jonathan’s advice and swore an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be killed.” 7So Jonathan summoned David and told him all these words. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he served him as he did before.#1Sm 16:21; 18:2,10,13
8When war broke out again, David went out and fought against the Philistines. He defeated them with such great force that they fled from him.
9Now an evil spirit sent from the Lord#1Sm 16:14; 18:10–11 came on Saul as he was sitting in his palace holding a spear.#1Sm 18:10 David was playing the lyre,#1Sm 16:14–16; 18:10 10and Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear.#1Sm 18:11; 20:33 As the spear struck the wall, David eluded Saul, ran away, and escaped that night. 11Saul sent agents to David’s house to watch for him and kill him in the morning.#Ps 59 But his wife Michal#1Sm 18:20 warned David, “If you don’t escape tonight, you will be dead tomorrow!” 12So she lowered David from the window, and he fled and escaped.#Jos 2:15; Ac 9:23–25 13Then Michal took the household idol and put it on the bed, placed some goat hair on its head, and covered it with a garment. 14When Saul sent agents to seize David, Michal said, “He’s sick.”#Jos 2:5
15Saul sent the agents back to see David and said, “Bring him on his bed so I can kill him.” 16When the agents arrived, to their surprise, the household idol was on the bed with some goat hair on its head.
17Saul asked Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away, and he has escaped!”
She answered him, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I kill you? ’”
18So David fled and escaped and went to Samuel at Ramah#1Sm 7:17 and told him everything Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel left and stayed at Naioth.#2Kg 6:1–2
19When it was reported to Saul that David was at Naioth in Ramah, 20he sent agents to seize David.#1Sm 19:11; Jn 7:32 However, when they saw the group of prophets prophesying#1Sm 10:5–6,10 with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God came on Saul’s agents, and they also started prophesying. 21When they reported to Saul, he sent other agents, and they also began prophesying.#Nm 11:25 So Saul tried again and sent a third group of agents, and even they began prophesying. 22Then Saul himself went to Ramah. He came to the large cistern at Secu and asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”
“At Naioth in Ramah,” someone said.
23So he went to Naioth in Ramah. The Spirit of God also came on him,#1Sm 10:10 and as he walked along, he prophesied until he entered Naioth in Ramah. 24Saul then removed his clothes and also prophesied before Samuel; he collapsed and lay naked#Is 20:2; Mc 1:8 all that day and all that night. That is why they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” #1Sm 10:5–13

1 Samuel 19

David is Persecuted by Saul
1Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officials that he planned to kill#19.1 that he planned to kill; or to kill. David. But Jonathan was very fond of David, 2and so he said to him, “My father is trying to kill you. Please be careful tomorrow morning; hide in some secret place and stay there. 3I will go and stand by my father in the field where you are hiding, and I will speak to him about you. If I find out anything, I will let you know.”
4Jonathan praised David to Saul and said, “Sir, don't do wrong to your servant David. He has never done you any wrong; on the contrary, everything he has done has been a great help to you. 5He risked his life when he killed Goliath, and the LORD won a great victory for Israel. When you saw it, you were glad. Why, then, do you now want to do wrong to an innocent man and kill David for no reason at all?”
6Saul was convinced by what Jonathan said and made a vow in the LORD's name that he would not kill David. 7So Jonathan called David and told him everything; then he took him to Saul, and David served the king as he had before.
8War with the Philistines broke out again. David attacked them and defeated them so thoroughly that they fled.
9One day an evil spirit from the LORD took control of Saul. He was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was there, playing his harp. 10Saul tried to pin David to the wall with his spear, but David dodged, and the spear stuck in the wall. David ran away and escaped.

Ps 59 (Title) That same night Saul sent some men to watch David's house and kill him the next morning. Michal, David's wife, warned him, “If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.” 12She let him down from a window, and he ran away and escaped. 13Then she took the household idol, laid it on the bed, put a pillow made of goats'-hair at its head, and put a cover over it. 14When Saul's men came to get David, Michal told them that he was ill. 15But Saul sent them back to see David for themselves. He ordered them, “Carry him here in his bed, and I will kill him.” 16They went inside and found the household idol in the bed and the goats'-hair pillow at its head. 17Saul asked Michal, “Why have you tricked me like this and let my enemy escape?”
She answered, “He said he would kill me if I didn't help him to escape.”
18David escaped and went to Samuel in Ramah and told him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19Saul was told that David was in Naioth in Ramah, 20so he sent some men to arrest him. They saw#19.20 Some ancient translations They saw; Hebrew He saw. the group of prophets dancing and shouting, with Samuel as their leader. Then the Spirit of God took control of Saul's men, and they also began to dance and shout. 21When Saul heard of this, he sent more messengers, and they also began to dance and shout. He sent messengers the third time, and the same thing happened to them. 22Then he himself started out for Ramah. When he came to the large well in Secu, he asked where Samuel and David were and was told that they were at Naioth. 23As he was going there, the Spirit of God took control of him also, and he danced and shouted all the way to Naioth. 24#1 Sam 10.11–12He took off his clothes and danced and shouted in Samuel's presence, and lay naked all that day and all that night. (This is how the saying originated, “Has even Saul become a prophet?”)
