1 John 3
3
1See what great love#3:1 Or what sort of love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children — and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. 2Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed.#2Co 4:11; 1Pt 5:4; 1Jn 2:28 We know that when he appears,#3:2 Or when it appears we will be like him#Rm 8:29; 1Co 15:49; 2Co 3:18; Php 3:21; 2Pt 1:4 because we will see him as he is.#1Co 13:12; Heb 12:14; Rv 22:4 3And everyone who has this hope#Ac 23:6; 1Th 1:3 in him purifies himself just as he is pure.#Php 4:8
4Everyone who commits sin practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he was revealed so that he might take away sins,#3:5 Other mss read our sins#Jn 1:29; 1Co 15:3; Heb 10:4; 1Pt 2:24 and there is no sin in him.#2Co 5:21; Heb 4:15; 7:26; 1Pt 2:21–22; 3:18; 1Jn 2:29 6Everyone who remains in him#Jn 15:4–7; 1Jn 2:6,24,27–28; 3:24; 4:13,15–16 does not sin;#3:6 Or not keep on sinning#Rm 6:11–12; 1Jn 2:29; 5:18 everyone who sins#3:6 Or who keeps on sinning has not seen him or known him.
7Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8The one who commits#3:8 Or practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God#Mk 1:11 was revealed#Jn 21:1; 2Co 4:11; 1Pt 5:4; 1Jn 5:20 for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works. 9Everyone who has been born of God#1Jn 2:29 does not sin,#3:9 Or not practice sin because his seed#1Pt 1:23 remains in him; he is not able to sin,#3:9 Or to keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.#1Jn 2:10; 3:14–17; 4:20–21
Love in Action
11For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another, 12unlike Cain,#Gn 4:1; Jd 11 who was of the evil one#2Th 3:3 and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
13Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates#Jn 17:14 you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.#Jn 8:51 15Everyone who hates his brother or sister#1Jn 2:9,11; 4:20 is a murderer,#Mt 5:21–22; Jn 8:44 and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life#Jn 10:11,14,17–18; 13:37–38; 15:13 for us.#Is 53:10; Mk 10:45 We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.#Mk 8:34–35; 1Co 11:1; Php 2:5–8 17If anyone has this world’s goods#Mk 12:44; Lk 15:12; 1Jn 2:16 and sees a fellow believer#3:17 Lit sees his brother or sister in need#Ac 2:45 but withholds compassion#2Co 7:15 from him — how does God’s love reside in him?#Jms 2:15–16; 1Jn 2:5 18Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.#Mt 7:21; Jn 13:34–35; 15:12–17; Jms 1:22–25; 2:14–17
19This is how we will know that we belong to the truth#Jn 14:6; 2Co 11:10; 3Jn 3 and will reassure our hearts before him 20whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.#Ps 139:6; Pr 2:6; Jn 14:28
21Dear friends, if our hearts don’t condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive whatever we ask from him because we keep his commands#Mk 7:8; Jn 14:15; 1Jn 2:3; 5:2 and do what is pleasing in his sight. 23Now this is his command: that we believe in the name#Ps 33:21; Is 50:10; Jn 1:12; 3:18; 1Jn 5:13 of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps his commands remains in him,#Lk 11:13; Jn 15:4–7; Ac 5:32; 15:8 and he in him. And the way we know that he remains in us#Jn 6:56 is from the Spirit#Rm 8:9–16 he has given us.

1 John 3
3
1See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,#3:2 Or when it is made known we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
More on Love and Hatred
11For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,#3:13 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 16. if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
