Boaz Will Redeem Ruth
1Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to Ruth, “My daughter, shall I not look for #3:1 Lit rest.security and a home for you, so that it may be well with you? 2Now Boaz, with whose maids you were [working], is he not our relative? See now, he is winnowing barley at the threshing floor tonight. 3So wash and anoint yourself [with olive oil], then put on your [#3:3 One rabbi said that these were special garments for the Sabbath.best] clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; #3:3 Lit do not reveal yourself to the man.but stay out of the man’s sight until he has finished eating and drinking. 4When he lies down, notice the place where he is lying, and #3:4 By her action Ruth was expressing her desire and willingness to marry Boaz.go and uncover his feet and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.” 5Ruth answered her, “I will do everything that you say.”
6So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had told her. 7When Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was happy, he went to lie down at the end of the stack of grain. Then Ruth came secretly, and uncovered his feet and lay down. 8In the middle of the night the man was startled and he turned over, and found a woman lying at his feet. 9So he said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth your maid. Spread the hem of your garment over me, for you are a close relative and redeemer.” 10Then he said, “May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter. You have made your last kindness better than the first; for you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. 11Now, my daughter, do not be afraid. I will do for you whatever you ask, since all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence. 12It is true that I am your close relative and redeemer; however, there is a relative closer [to you] than I. 13Spend the night [here], and in the morning if he will redeem you, fine; let him do it. But if he does not wish to redeem you, then, as the Lord lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning.”
14So she lay at his feet until the morning, but got up before anyone could recognize another; Boaz said, “#3:14 The wording suggests that this was a command Boaz gave to others who were near him on the threshing floor.Do not let it be known that the woman came to the threshing floor [last night].” 15He also said, “Give me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” So Ruth held it and he measured out six measures of barley [into it] and placed it on her. And she went into the city. 16When she came home, her mother-in-law said, “How did it go, my daughter?” And Ruth told her everything that the man had done for her. 17She said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, and he said to me, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’ ” 18Then Naomi said, “Sit and wait, my daughter, until you learn how this matter turns out; for the man will not rest until he has settled it today.”

Ruth Finds a Husband
1Some time later Naomi said to Ruth, “I must find a husband for you, so that you will have a home of your own. 2Remember that this man Boaz, whose women you have been working with, is our relative. Now listen. This evening he will be threshing the barley. 3So wash yourself, put on some perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go where he is threshing, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4Be sure to notice where he lies down, and after he falls asleep, go and lift the covers and lie down at his feet. He will tell you what to do.”
5Ruth answered, “I will do everything you say.”
6So Ruth went to the threshing place and did just what her mother-in-law had told her. 7When Boaz had finished eating and drinking, he was in a good mood. He went to the pile of barley and lay down to sleep. Ruth slipped over quietly, lifted the covers and lay down at his feet. 8During the night he woke up suddenly, turned over, and was surprised to find a woman lying at his feet. 9“Who are you?” he asked.
“It's Ruth, sir,” she answered. “Because you are a close relative, you are responsible for taking care of me. So please marry me.”
10“The LORD bless you,” he said. “You are showing even greater family loyalty in what you are doing now than in what you did for your mother-in-law. You might have gone looking for a young man, either rich or poor, but you didn't. 11Now don't worry, Ruth. I will do everything you ask; as everyone in town knows, you are a fine woman. 12#Ruth 2.20It is true that I am a close relative and am responsible for you, but there is a man who is a closer relative than I am. 13Stay here the rest of the night, and in the morning we will find out whether or not he will take responsibility for you. If so, well and good; if not, then I swear by the living LORD that I will take the responsibility. Now lie down and stay here till morning.”
14So she lay there at his feet, but she got up before it was light enough for her to be seen, because Boaz did not want anyone to know that she had been there. 15Boaz said to her, “Take off your cloak and spread it out here.” She did, and he poured out nearly twenty kilogrammes of barley and helped her to lift it on her shoulder. Then she returned to the town with it. 16When she arrived home, her mother-in-law asked her, “How did you get on, my daughter?”
Ruth told her everything that Boaz had done for her. 17She added, “He told me I must not come back to you empty-handed, so he gave me all this barley.”
18Naomi said to her, “Now be patient, Ruth, until you see how this all turns out. Boaz will not rest today until he settles the matter.”
