Psalms 81

Psalm 81
God’s Goodness and Israel’s Waywardness.
To the Chief Musician; set to the #81:0 A technical musical term, meaning uncertain.Philistine lute. A Psalm of Asaph.
1Sing aloud to God our strength;
Shout for joy to the God of Jacob (Israel).
2Raise a song, sound the timbrel,
The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.
3Blow the trumpet at the New Moon,
At the #81:3 Or New Moon, lit covering, i.e. when the moon is “covered” or hidden. This was taken by the ancient rabbis to refer to the festival of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashana).full moon, on our feast day.
4For this is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5He established it for a testimony in #81:5 Curiously, in this one verse Joseph’s name has an extra letter, an “h.” In an example of rabbinic lore, the ancient rabbis said that because Joseph sanctified the divine name in private (by resisting Potiphar’s wife) he merited having one letter of the divine name (Yahweh) added to his. Another rabbinic explanation is that when Pharaoh was about to elevate Joseph to power, the astrologers demanded that Joseph speak the 70 languages of the world. The angel Gabriel came to teach him, but Joseph was unable until Gabriel added to his name the extra letter from the divine name.Joseph
When He went throughout the land of Egypt.
I heard the language [of One whom] I did not know, saying,
6¶“I removed the burden from his shoulder;
His hands were freed from the basket.
7“You called in [the time of] trouble and I rescued you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah. [Num 20:3, 13, 24] Selah.
8“Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you—
O Israel, if you would listen to Me!
9“Let there be no strange god among you,
Nor shall you worship any foreign god.
10“I am the Lord your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.
11¶“But My people would not listen to My voice,
And Israel did not [consent to] obey Me.
12“So I gave them up to the stubbornness of their heart,
To walk in [the path of] their own counsel. [Acts 7:42, 43; 14:16; Rom 1:24, 26]
13“Oh, that My people would listen to Me,
That Israel would walk in My ways!
14“Then I would quickly subdue and humble their enemies
And turn My hand against their adversaries;
15Those who hate the Lord would pretend obedience to Him and cringe before Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.
16“But I would feed Israel with the finest of the wheat;
And with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

Psalms 81
81
Psalm 81#In Hebrew texts 81:1-16 is numbered 81:2-17.
For the director of music. According to gittith.#Title: Probably a musical term Of Asaph.
1Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
2Begin the music, strike the timbrel,
play the melodious harp and lyre.
3Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon,
and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival;
4this is a decree for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5When God went out against Egypt,
he established it as a statute for Joseph.
I heard an unknown voice say:
6“I removed the burden from their shoulders;
their hands were set free from the basket.
7In your distress you called and I rescued you,
I answered you out of a thundercloud;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.#81:7 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here.
8Hear me, my people, and I will warn you—
if you would only listen to me, Israel!
9You shall have no foreign god among you;
you shall not worship any god other than me.
10I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.
11“But my people would not listen to me;
Israel would not submit to me.
12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own devices.
13“If my people would only listen to me,
if Israel would only follow my ways,
14how quickly I would subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes!
15Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,
and their punishment would last forever.
16But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;
with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
