Psalms 72

Psalm 72
The Reign of the Righteous King.
A Psalm of Solomon.
1Give the king [knowledge of] Your judgments, O God,
And [the spirit of] Your righteousness to the king’s son [to guide all his ways].
2May he judge Your people with righteousness,
And Your afflicted with justice. [1 Kin 3:1-5]
3The mountains will bring peace and prosperity to the people,
And the hills, in [the establishment of] righteousness.
4May he bring justice to the poor among the people,
Save the children of the needy
And crush the oppressor,
5¶Let them fear You [with awe-inspired reverence and worship You with obedience] while the sun endures,
And as long as the moon [reflects light], throughout all generations.
6May he come down like rain on the mown grass,
Like showers that water the earth.
7In his days may the righteous flourish,
And peace abound until the moon is no more. [Is 11:1-9]
8¶May he also rule from sea to sea
And from the River [Euphrates] to the ends of the earth. [Zech 14:9]
9The nomads of the desert will bow before him,
And his enemies will #72:9 I.e. lay themselves face down in submission.lick the dust.
10The kings of Tarshish and of the islands will bring offerings;
The kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts.
11Yes, all kings will bow down before him,
All nations will serve him. [Ps 138:4]
12¶For he will rescue the needy when he cries for help,
The afflicted and abused also, and him who has no helper.
13He will have compassion on the poor and needy,
And he will save the lives of the needy.
14He will redeem their life from oppression and fraud and violence,
And their blood will be precious in His sight.
15So may he live, and may the gold of Sheba be given to him;
And let them pray for him continually;
Let them bless and praise him all day long.
16¶There will be an abundance of grain in the soil on the top of the #72:16 I.e. the most barren part of the land.mountains;
Its fruit will wave like [the cedars of] Lebanon,
And those of the city will flourish like grass of the earth.
17May his name endure forever;
May his name continue as long as the sun;
And let men bless themselves by him;
Let all nations call him blessed.
18¶Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
Who alone does wonderful things.
19Blessed be His glorious name forever;
And may the whole earth be filled with His glory.
Amen and Amen.
20¶The prayers of David son of Jesse are ended.

Psalms 72
72
A Prayer for the King
Of Solomon.
1God, give the king your good judgment
and the king’s son your goodness.
2Help him judge your people fairly
and decide what is right for the poor.
3Let there be peace on the mountains
and goodness on the hills for the people.
4Help him be fair to the poor
and save the needy
and punish those who hurt them.
5May they respect you as long as the sun shines
and as long as the moon glows.
6Let him be like rain on the grass,
like showers that water the earth.
7Let goodness be plentiful while he lives.
Let peace continue as long as there is a moon.
8Let his kingdom go from sea to sea,
and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
9Let the people of the desert bow down to him,
and make his enemies lick the dust.
10Let the kings of Tarshish and the faraway lands
bring him gifts.
Let the kings of Sheba and Seba
bring their presents to him.
11Let all kings bow down to him
and all nations serve him.
12He will help the poor when they cry out
and will save the needy when no one else will help.
13He will be kind to the weak and poor,
and he will save their lives.
14He will save them from cruel people who try to hurt them,
because their lives are precious to him.
15Long live the king!
Let him receive gold from Sheba.
Let people always pray for him
and bless him all day long.
16Let the fields grow plenty of grain
and the hills be covered with crops.
Let the land be as fertile as Lebanon,
and let the cities grow like the grass in a field.
17Let the king be famous forever;
let him be remembered as long as the sun shines.
Let the nations be blessed because of him,
and may they all bless him.
18Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does such miracles.
19Praise his glorious name forever.
Let his glory fill the whole world.
Amen and amen.
20This ends the prayers of David son of Jesse.
