Psalms 135

Psalm 135
Praise the Lord’s Wonderful Works. Vanity of Idols.
1Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)
Praise the name of the Lord;
Praise Him, O servants of the Lord (priests, Levites),
2You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In the courts of the house of our God,
3Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
Sing praises to His name, for it is gracious and lovely.
4For the Lord has chosen [the descendants of] Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His own special treasure and possession. [Deut 7:6]
5¶For I know that the Lord is great
And that our Lord is above all gods.
6Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,
In the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all deeps—
7Who causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth;
Who makes lightning for the rain,
Who brings the wind from His storehouses;
8¶Who struck the firstborn of Egypt,
Both of man and animal; [Ex 12:12, 29; Ps 78:51; 136:10]
9Who sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt,
Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
10Who struck many nations
And killed mighty kings,
11Sihon, king of the Amorites,
Og, king of Bashan,
And all the kingdoms of Canaan;
12And He gave their land as a heritage,
A heritage to Israel His people.
13Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
Your fame and remembrance, O Lord, [endures] throughout all generations.
14For the Lord will judge His people
And He will have compassion on His servants [revealing His mercy]. [Heb 10:30]
15The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
16They have mouths, but they do not speak;
They have eyes, but they do not see;
17They have ears, but they do not hear,
Nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18Those who make idols are like them [absolutely worthless—spiritually blind, deaf, and powerless];
So is everyone who trusts in and relies on them. [Ps 115:4-8]
19¶O house of Israel, bless and praise the Lord [with gratitude];
O house of Aaron, bless the Lord;
20O house of Levi, bless the Lord;
You who fear the Lord [and worship Him with obedience], bless the Lord [with grateful praise]! [Deut 6:5; Ps 31:23]
21Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
Who dwells [with us] at Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)

Psalm 135
1Hallelujah!
Praise the name of the Lord.
Praise him, you servants of the Lord
2who are standing in the house of the Lord,
in the courtyards of the house of our God.
3Praise the Lord because he is good.
Make music to praise his name because his name is beautiful.
4The Lord chose Jacob to be his own
and chose Israel to be his own special treasure.
5I know that the Lord is great,
that our Lord is greater than all the false gods.
6The Lord does whatever he wants in heaven or on earth,
on the seas or in all the depths of the oceans.
7He is the one who makes the clouds rise from the ends of the earth,
who makes lightning for the thunderstorms,
and who brings wind out of his storerooms.
8He is the one who killed every firstborn male in Egypt.
He killed humans and animals alike.
9He sent miraculous signs and amazing things into the heart of Egypt
against Pharaoh and all his officials.
10He is the one who defeated many nations and killed mighty kings:
11King Sihon of the Amorites,
King Og of Bashan,
and all the kingdoms in Canaan.
12He gave their land as an inheritance,
an inheritance to his people Israel.
13O Lord, your name endures forever.
O Lord, you will be remembered throughout every generation.
14The Lord will provide justice for his people
and have compassion on his servants.
15The idols of the nations are made of silver and gold.
They were made by human hands.#135:15 Verses 15–18 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 115:4–8.
16They have mouths, but they cannot speak.
They have eyes, but they cannot see.
17They have ears, but they cannot hear.
They cannot breathe.
18Those who make idols end up like them.
So does everyone who trusts them.
19Descendants of Israel, praise the Lord.
Descendants of Aaron, praise the Lord.
20Descendants of Levi, praise the Lord.
You people who fear the Lord, praise the Lord.
21Thank the Lord in Zion.
Thank the one who lives in Jerusalem.
Hallelujah!
