Matthew 14

John the Baptist Beheaded

1At that time Herod [Antipas], the tetrarch [who governed a portion of Palestine including Galilee and Perea], heard the reports about Jesus, [Luke 9:7-9] 2and said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and that is why the miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3For Herod had John arrested and bound him and put him in prison [at the fortress of Machaerus, east of the Jordan, to keep him away] because of #14:3 Herodias was not the lawful wife of Herod Antipas. She was married to her uncle, Herod Philip I. She deserted him in order to live with another uncle, Herod Antipas, whose legal wife was the daughter of Aretas, King of Arabia.Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, [Mark 6:17; Luke 3:19] 4for John had said to him, “It is not lawful (morally right) for you to have her [living with you as your wife].” [Lev 18:16; 20:21] 5Although Herod wished to have him put to death, he feared the people, for they regarded John as a prophet.

6But when Herod’s birthday came, [his niece Salome], the daughter of Herodias danced [immodestly] before them and pleased and fascinated Herod, 7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8She, being coached by her mother [Herodias], said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests, he ordered it to be given her. 10He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother [Herodias]. 12And John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

Five Thousand Fed

13When Jesus heard about John, He left there privately in a boat and went to a secluded place. But when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. [Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-13] 14When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt [profound] compassion for them and healed their sick.

15When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is an isolated place and the hour is already late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” 17They replied, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.” 18He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and He took the five loaves and the two fish and, looking up toward heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people, 20and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up twelve full baskets of the leftover broken pieces. 21There were about 5,000 men who ate, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water

22Immediately He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], while He sent the crowds away. [Mark 6:45-52; John 6:15-21] 23After He had dismissed the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was there alone. 24But the boat [by this time] was already a #14:24 Lit many stadia; a stadion being about an eighth of a mile or 192 meters.long distance from land, tossed and battered by the waves; for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night (3:00-6:00 a.m.) Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. [Mark 6:48; John 6:19] 26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately He spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I! Do not be afraid!” [Ex 3:14]

28Peter replied to Him, “Lord, if it is [really] You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29He said, “Come!” So Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw [the effects of] the wind, he was frightened, and he began to sink, and he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Immediately Jesus extended His hand and caught him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you #14:31 I.e. allow yourself to be drawn in two directions.doubt?” 32And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33Then those in the boat worshiped Him [with awe-inspired reverence], saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”

34When they had crossed over [the sea], they went ashore at Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word throughout all the surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36and they begged Him to let them merely touch the fringe of His robe; and all who touched it were perfectly restored. [Matt 9:20]

1At that time #Mark 6:14–29; Luke 9:7–9Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus 2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” 3#Matt. 4:12; Mark 6:17; Luke 3:19, 20For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. 4Because John had said to him, #Lev. 18:16; 20:21“It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, #Matt. 21:26; Luke 20:6because they counted him as a prophet.

6But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. 7Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

8So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”

9And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. 10So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. 11And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Feeding the Five Thousand

13#Matt. 10:23; 12:15; Mark 6:32–44; Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1, 2When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He #Matt. 9:36; Mark 6:34was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. 15#Mark 6:35; Luke 9:12When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”

16But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

18He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, #1 Sam. 9:13; Matt. 15:36; 26:26; Mark 6:41; 8:7; 14:22; Luke 24:30; Acts 27:35; (Rom. 14:6)He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. 20So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Sea

22Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23#Mark 6:46; Luke 9:28; John 6:15And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. #John 6:16Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

25Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26And when the disciples saw Him #Job 9:8walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.

27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good #Acts 23:11; 27:22, 25, 36cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

28And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

29So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of #Matt. 6:30; 8:26little faith, why did you doubt?” 32And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

33Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly #Ps. 2:7; Matt. 16:16; 26:63; Mark 1:1; Luke 4:41; John 1:49; 6:69; 11:27; Acts 8:37; Rom. 1:4You are the Son of God.”

Many Touch Him and Are Made Well

34#Mark 6:53; Luke 5:1When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, 36and begged Him that they might only #(Mark 5:24–34)touch the hem of His garment. And #Matt. 9:20; Mark 3:10; (Luke 6:19); Acts 19:12as many as touched it were made perfectly well.
