In Egypt Jeremiah Warns of Judgment
1Now it happened when Jeremiah, whom the Lord their God had sent, had finished telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God—that is, all these words— 2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the proud and insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are not telling the truth! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go into Egypt to live there.’ 3But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans, so they may [either] put us to death or exile us to Babylon.” 4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people disobeyed the voice of the Lord [which told them] to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6the men, women, and children, the king’s daughters (ladies of the court), and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; he also took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7So they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Lord) and they went in as far as #43:7 See note 2:16.Tahpanhes.
8Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9“Take some large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork [of the terrace] which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s #43:9 A secondary palace.house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of some of the men of Judah; 10and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get #43:10 See note 21:2.Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I am going to set his throne over these stones that I have hidden; and his [majestic, royal] canopy will be spread over them. He will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will go away from there safely. 13Nebuchadnezzar will also break the images and shatter the obelisks of #43:13 Heb Beth-shemesh; i.e. the house of the sun-god. Jeremiah is Taken to Egypt
1I finished telling the people everything that the LORD their God had sent me to tell them. 2Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other arrogant men said to me, “You are lying. The LORD our God did not send you to tell us not to go and live in Egypt. 3Baruch son of Neriah has stirred you up against us, so that the Babylonians will gain power over us and can either kill us or take us away to Babylonia.” 4So neither Johanan nor any of the army officers nor any of the people would obey the LORD's command to remain in the land of Judah. 5#2 Kgs 25.26Then Johanan and all the army officers took everybody left in Judah away to Egypt, together with all the people who had returned from the nations where they had been scattered: 6the men, the women, the children, and the king's daughters. They took everyone whom Nebuzaradan the commanding officer had left under the care of Gedaliah, including Baruch and me. 7They disobeyed the LORD's command and went into Egypt as far as the city of Tahpanhes.
8There the LORD said to me, 9“Get some large stones and bury them in the mortar of the pavement#43.9 Probable text bury them… pavement; Hebrew unclear. in front of the entrance to the government building here in the city, and let some of the Israelites see you do it. 10Then tell them that I, the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, am going to bring my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia to this place, and he#43.10 Some ancient translations he; Hebrew I. will put his throne over these stones that you#43.10 Some ancient translations you; Hebrew I. buried, and will spread the royal tent over them. 11Nebuchadnezzar will come and defeat Egypt. Those people who are doomed to die of disease will die of disease, those doomed to be taken away as prisoners will be taken away as prisoners, and those doomed to be killed in war will be killed in war. 12I will set fire to the temples of Egypt's gods, and the king of Babylonia will either burn their gods or carry them off. As shepherds pick their clothes clean of lice, so the king of Babylonia will pick the land of Egypt clean and then leave victorious. 13He will destroy the sacred stone monuments at Heliopolis in Egypt and will burn down the temples of the Egyptian gods.”
