The Believer’s Rest
1Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still remains and is freely offered today, let us fear, in case any one of you may seem to come short of reaching it or think he has come too late. 2For indeed we have had the good news [of salvation] preached to us, just as the Israelites also [when the good news of the promised land came to them]; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not united with faith [in God] by those who heard. 3For we who believe [that is, we who personally trust and confidently rely on God] enter that rest [so we have His inner peace now because we are confident in our salvation, and assured of His power], just as He has said,
“As I swore [an oath] in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,”
[this He said] although His works were #4:3 God “rested” because everything that needed to be done was done—everything was complete, fully accomplished. In human terms this expression is used when a lawyer completes his presentation in a court of law; he “rests” his case—everything is in evidence, there is nothing left to present.completed from the foundation of the world [waiting for all who would believe]. [Ps 95:11]
4For somewhere [in Scripture] He has said this about the seventh day: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; [Gen 2:2] 5and again in this, “They shall not enter My rest.” [Ps 95:11] 6Therefore, since the promise remains for some to enter His rest, and those who formerly had the good news preached to them failed to [grasp it and did not] enter because of [their unbelief evidenced by] disobedience, 7He again sets a definite day, [a new] “Today,” [providing another opportunity to enter that rest by] saying through David after so long a time, just as has been said before [in the words already quoted],
“Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.” [Ps 95:7, 8]
8[This mention of a rest was not a reference to their entering into Canaan.] For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak about another day [of opportunity] after that. 9So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own. [Gen 2:2] 11Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness]. 12For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged #4:12 In addition to “sword,” the word in Greek was used for the knife used by the priests to slit the throats of the sacrificial lambs and for the knife (scalpel) used by a surgeon.sword, penetrating as far as the division of the #4:12 “soul and spirit” used here to emphasize the whole person, not two separate entities as in other passages.soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.
14Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior]. 15For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect as we are, yet without [committing any] sin. 16Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

The Rest that Remains for the People of God
1 Therefore let us fear, while there#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the participle (“remains”) which is understood as temporal remains a promise of entering into his rest, that none of you appear to fall short of it. 2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us#Literally “for we are also having had the good news proclaimed”, just as those also did, but the message they heard#Literally “of hearing” did not benefit them, because they#*Here “because” is supplied as a component of the participle (“united”) which is understood as causal were not united with those who heard it in faith. 3For we who have believed enter into rest,#Some manuscripts have “that rest” just as he has said,
“As I swore in my anger,
‘They will never enter#Literally “if they will enter” into my rest.’ ”#A quotation from Ps 95:11
And yet these works have been accomplished from the foundation of the world. 4For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works,”#A quotation from Gen 2:2 5and in this passage again, ‘They will never enter#Literally “if they will enter” into my rest.’ ”#A quotation from Ps 95:11 6Since therefore it remains for some to enter into it, and the ones to whom the good news was proclaimed previously did not enter because of disobedience, 7again he ordains a certain day, today, speaking by David after so long a time, just as had been said before,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”#A quotation from Ps 95:7b-8 (see also Heb 3:7–8, 15)
8For if Joshua had caused them to rest, he would not have spoken about another day after these things. 9Consequently a sabbath rest remains for the people of God. 10For the one who has entered into his rest has also himself rested from his works, just as God did from his own works.
11Therefore, let us make every effort to enter into that rest, in order that no one may fall in the same pattern of disobedience. 12For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, both joints and marrow, and able to judge the reflections and thoughts of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden in the sight of him, but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of him to whom we must give our account#Literally “our account”.
Jesus Our Great High Priest
14Therefore, because we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is not able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but who has been tempted in all things in the same way, without sin. 16Therefore let us approach with confidence to the throne of grace, in order that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
