PSALM 2
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
1Why rage the heathen?
and vain things why do the people mind?
2Kings of the earth do set themselves,
and princes are combin'd,
To plot against the Lord, and his
Anointed, saying thus,
3Let us asunder break their bands,
and cast their cords from us.
4He that in heaven sits shall laugh;
the Lord shall scorn them all.
5Then shall he speak to them in wrath,
in rage he vex them shall.
6Yet, notwithstanding,
I have him to be my King appointed;
And over Sion, my holy hill,
I have him King anointed.
7The sure decree I will declare:
The Lord hath said to me,
Thou art mine only Son;
this day I have begotten thee.
8Ask of me, and for heritage
the heathen I'll make thine;
And, for possession, I to thee
will give earth's utmost line.
9Thou shalt, as with a weighty rod
of iron, break them all;
And, as a potter's sherd, thou shalt
them dash in pieces small.
10Now therefore, kings, be wise;
be taught, ye judges of the earth:
11Serve God in fear, and see that
ye join trembling with your mirth.
12Kiss ye the Son, lest in his ire
ye perish from the way,
If once his wrath begin to burn:
bless'd all that on him stay.

Psalms 2
2
1Why are the nations so angry?
Why are the people making such foolish plans?
2Their kings and leaders join together
to fight against the Lord and his chosen king.#2:2 his chosen king Or “his anointed one.”
3They say, “Let’s rebel against them.
Let’s break free from them!”
4But the one who rules in heaven laughs at them.
The Lord makes fun of them.
5He speaks to them in anger,
and it fills them with fear.
6He says, “I have chosen this man to be king,
and he will rule on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7Let me tell you about the Lord’s agreement:
He said to me, “Today I have become your father,#2:7 I have become your father Literally, “I fathered you.” Originally, this probably meant God was “adopting” the king as his son.
and you are my son.
8If you ask, I will give you the nations.
Everyone on earth will be yours.
9You will rule over them with great power.
You will scatter your enemies like broken pieces of pottery!”
10So, kings and rulers, be smart
and learn this lesson.
11Serve the Lord with fear and trembling.
12Show that you are loyal to his son,#2:12 Show … his son Literally, “Kiss the son.”
or the Lord will be angry and destroy you.
He is almost angry enough to do that now,
but those who go to him for protection will be blessed.
