A Love Song
1Solomon’s Song of Songs.
The Woman Speaks to the Man She Loves
2Kiss me with the kisses of your mouth!
Your love is better than wine.
3The smell of your perfume is pleasant.
Your name is pleasant like expensive perfume!
That’s why the young women love you.
4Take me with you; let’s run.
The king takes me into his rooms.
Friends Speak to the Man
We will rejoice and be happy with you.
We praise your love more than wine.
The Woman Speaks
With good reason, the young women love you, my lover.
5I’m dark but lovely,
women of Jerusalem.
I’m dark like the tents of Kedar,
like the curtains of Solomon.
6Don’t look at how dark I am,
at how dark the sun has made me.
My brothers were angry with me.
They made me tend the vineyards.
So I haven’t tended my own vineyard!
7Tell me, you whom I love,
where do you feed your sheep?
Where do you make them rest at noon?
Why should I look for you near your friend’s sheep?
Am I like a woman who wears a veil?# This was the way a prostitute usually dressed.
The Man Speaks to the Woman
8You are the most beautiful of women.
Surely you know to follow the sheep.
Feed your young goats
near the shepherds’ tents.
9My darling, you are like a mare
that pulls the king’s chariots.
10Your cheeks are beautiful with ornaments.
Your neck is beautiful with jewels.
11We will make for you gold earrings
with silver hooks.
The Woman Speaks
12The smell of my perfume spreads out
to the king on his couch.
13My lover is like a bag of myrrh
that lies all night between my breasts.
14My lover is like a bunch of flowers
from the vineyards at En Gedi.
The Man Speaks
15My darling, you are beautiful!
Oh, you are beautiful!
Your eyes are like doves!
The Woman Answers the Man
16You are so handsome, my lover.
You are so pleasant!
Our bed is the grass.
17The boards of our house are cedar trees.
And the wood of our ceiling is juniper trees.

Love Is Better than Wine
1 #
1 K 4.32. This is Solomon's
most beautiful song.
She Speaks:
2Kiss me tenderly!
Your love is better than wine,
3and you smell so sweet.
All the young women adore you;
the very mention of your name
is like spreading perfume.
* 4Hurry, my king! Let's hurry.
Take me to your home.
The Young Women Speak:
We are happy for you!
And we praise your love
even more than wine.
She Speaks:
Young women of Jerusalem,
it is only right
that you should adore him.
5My skin is dark and beautiful,
like a tent in the desert
or like Solomon's curtains.
6Don't stare at me
just because the sun
has darkened my skin.
My brothers were angry with me;
they made me work in the vineyard,
and so I neglected
my complexion.
7My darling, I love you!
Where do you feed your sheep
and let them rest at noon?
Don't let the other shepherds
think badly of me.
I'm not one of those women
who shamelessly follow
after shepherds.#1.7 Don't let … after shepherds: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
He Speaks:
8My dearest, if you don't know,
just follow the path
of the sheep.
Then feed your young goats
near the shepherds' tents.
9You move as gracefully
as the pony that leads
the chariot of the king.
10Earrings add to your beauty,
and you wear a necklace
of precious stones.
11Let's make you some jewelry
of gold, woven with silver.
She Speaks:
12My king, while you
were on your couch,
my aroma was a magic charm.#1.12 magic charm: The Hebrew text has “spikenard” (or “nard”), a sweet-smelling ointment made from a plant that comes from India. The ointment was sometimes used as a love charm.
13My darling, you are perfume
between my breasts;
14you are flower blossoms
from the gardens of En-Gedi.#1.14 En-Gedi: An oasis west of the Dead Sea.
He Speaks:
15My darling, you are lovely,
so very lovely—
your eyes are those of a dove.
She Speaks:
16My love, you are handsome,
truly handsome—
the fresh green grass
will be our wedding bed
17in the shade of cedar
and cypress trees.
