Psalms 72
72
A Prayer for the King
Of Solomon.
1God, give the king your good judgment
and the king’s son your goodness.
2Help him judge your people fairly.
Help him decide what is right for the poor.
3Let there be peace on the mountains
and goodness on the hills.
4Help him be fair to the poor.
Help him save the needy
and punish those who hurt them.
5Help him live as long as the sun shines.
Help him rule as long as the moon glows.
Let him be king from now on!
6Let him be like rain on the grass,
like showers that water the earth.
7Let goodness be plentiful while he lives.
Let peace continue as long as there is a moon.
8Let his kingdom go from sea to sea,
and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
9Let the people of the desert bow down to him.
And make his enemies lick the dust.
10Let the kings of Tarshish and the faraway lands
bring him gifts.
Let the kings of Sheba and Seba
bring their presents to him.
11Let all kings bow down to him.
Let all nations serve him.
12He will help the poor when they cry for help.
He will help the needy when no one else will help them.
13He will be kind to the weak and poor.
He will save their lives.
14He will save them from cruel people who try to hurt them.
Their lives are precious to him.
15Long live the king!
Let him receive gold from Sheba.
Let people always pray for him.
Let them bless him all day long.
16Let the fields grow plenty of grain.
Let the hills be covered with crops.
Let the land be as fertile as Lebanon.
Let the cities grow like the grass in a field.
17Let the king be famous forever.
Let him be remembered as long as the sun shines.
Let the nations be blessed because of him.
And may they all bless him.
18Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel.
Only he does such miracles.
19Praise his glorious name forever.
Let his glory fill the whole world.
20This ends the prayers of David son of Jesse.

Psalm 72
By Solomon.
1O God, give the king your justice
and the king’s son #72:1 According to ancient Jewish and Christian tradition, “king” and “king’s son” refer to the Messiah. your righteousness
2so that he may judge your people with righteousness
and your oppressed ⌞people⌟ with justice.
3May the mountains bring peace to the people
and the hills bring righteousness.
4May he grant justice to the people who are oppressed.
May he save the children of needy people
and crush their oppressor.
5May they fear you as long as the sun and moon ⌞shine⌟—
throughout every generation.
6May he be like rain that falls on ⌞freshly⌟ cut grass,
like showers that water the land.
7May righteous people blossom in his day.
May there be unlimited peace until the moon no longer ⌞shines⌟.
8May he rule from sea to sea,
from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
9May the people of the desert kneel in front of him.
May his enemies lick the dust.
10May the kings from Tarshish and the islands bring presents.
May the kings from Sheba and Seba bring gifts.
11May all kings worship him.
May all nations serve him.
12He will rescue the needy person who cries for help
and the oppressed person who has no one’s help.
13He will have pity on the poor and needy
and will save the lives of the needy.
14He will rescue them from oppression and violence.
Their blood will be precious in his sight.
15May he live long.
May the gold from Sheba be given to him.
May ⌞the people⌟ pray for him continually.
May ⌞they⌟ praise him all day long.
16May there be plenty of grain in the land.
May it wave ⌞in the breeze⌟ on the mountaintops,
its fruit like ⌞the treetops of⌟ Lebanon.
May those from the city flourish like the grass on the ground.
17May his name endure forever.
May his name continue as long as the sun ⌞shines⌟.
May all nations be blessed through him and call him blessed.
18Thank the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does miracles.
19Thanks be to his glorious name forever.
May the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and amen!
